IB DP sciences Internal Assessment: Important points for

teachers

Develop a series of skills to ensure success

Teachers should ensure that students have developed the necessary skills through
various training practices and experiences before beginning the internal assessment.

Provide ongoing guidance

It is important that teachers provide guidance during the entire IA investigation process,
and not only when they read a draft.
Some of the weaknesses that teachers could help the students correct during the
student’s design stage include: multiple independent variables, unquantifiable variables,
multiple investigations, unrealistic experimental expectations, unsafe or other
inappropriate investigations.
Discuss extensions
Teachers can discuss extensions to class investigations or topics studied throughout
the teaching of the course to help students generate their own ideas.
Prevent academic malpractice
Teachers as well as students are responsible for making sure that there is no academic
malpractice.
