C. Lesson Proper
 The teacher will start the lesson by asking the students few questions that will
help them realize how they found the answers in the previous activity.
Questions to ask:
1. Why do we need to read fast?
2. How can skimming and scanning help us in reading
3. Why do we need to read?

READING
Reading not just helps a person improves vocabulary, but also increases
basic knowledge.
TYPES OF READING STRATEGIES
1. SKIMMING
2. SCANNING

SKIMMING
- Skimming is when you read through a piece of writing quickly to see what it
is about. Skimming is the act of glancing through a text for gathering a basic
idea about that text. For instance, if you want to read an interesting article on
the newspaper and you do not have enough time to read more than one article,
you will skim through most of the article to decide exactly which article you
want to read. Skimming will also save a great amount of your valuable time if
you know how to skim a text efficiently.
SCANNING
- Scanning is when you scan the page with your eyes to find the answers to the
questions. Scanning is the act of searching a particular information in a text
with a particular approach. For instance, if you want to know the meaning of
the word ‘virtuous’ from a dictionary, you will start searching the letter V
first, then I, and then R; by then you probably will have found the word. This
process of searching is called scanning. It is a technique of fast reading.

 The teacher will provide a passage about the story of “The Rabbit and the
Tortoise”

THE RABBIT AND THE TORTOISE

AESOP
“Once upon a time a Tortoise and a Rabbit had an argument about who was faster. They
decided to settle the argument with a race. They agreed on a route and started off the race. The
rabbit shot ahead and ran briskly for some time. Then seeing that he was far ahead of the tortoise,
he thought he'd sit under a tree for some time and relax before continuing the race. He sat under
the tree and soon fell asleep. The tortoise plodding on overtook him and soon finished the race,
emerging as the undisputed champ. The rabbit woke up and realized that he'd lost the race.” The
rabbit was disappointed at losing the race and he did some soul-searching. He realized that he'd
lost the race only because he had been overconfident, careless and relax. If he had not taken things
for granted, there's no way the tortoise could have beaten him. So he challenged the tortoise to
another race. The tortoise agreed. This time, the rabbit went all out and ran without stopping from
start to finish. He won by several miles. The tortoise did some thinking this time, and realized that
there's no way he can beat the rabbit in a race the way it was currently formatted. He thought for a
while, and then challenged the rabbit to another race, but on a slightly different route. The rabbit
agreed. They started off. In keeping with his self-made commitment to be consistently fast, the
rabbit took off and ran at top speed until he came to a broad river. The finishing line was a couple
of kilometers on the other side of the river. The rabbit sat there wondering what to do. In the
meantime, the tortoise trundled along, got into the river, swam to the opposite bank, continued
walking and finished the race.

Instruction: Read the story above and use the appropriate reading strategies to
answer the following questions.
1. Where does the story take place?
2. What are the problems the character’s face?
3. Scan the text to know who are the characters of the story.
4. Why did the tortoise challenge the hare to a race?
5. Why was the hare so sure that he would win the race?
6. How did the tortoise win the race even though he is slower than the hare?
7. Skim the text to answer this question: What is the trait of the hare which was
the reason why he got loss?
8. Scan the story to know the 3 characteristics of the hare.

D. Activity

Why Is Hand Washing So Important?

Good hand washing is the first line of defense against the spread of many illnesses —
from the common cold to more serious infections, such as meningitis, bronchiolitis, flu,
hepatitis A, and many types of diarrhea. It's a message worth repeating — hand washing
is by far the best way to keep you from getting sick and prevent the spread of germs.
Here's how to scrub those germs away. Demonstrate or show — or better yet, wash your
hands together often so you learn how important this good habit is. First, wet your hands
with clean, running water (warm or cold). Make sure the water isn't too hot for little
hands. Second, use soap and lather up for about 20 seconds. Antibacterial soap isn't a
must — any soap will do. Third, make sure you get in between your fingers, on the
backs of hands, and under the nails where germs like to hangout. And don't forget the
wrists. Finally, rinse and dry well with a clean towel. When you come into contact with
germs, you can become infected just by touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. And once
you’re infected, it's usually just a matter of time before the whole family comes down
with the same illness.

Answer the following questions based on the reading passage. Don’t forget to go
back to the passage whenever necessary to find or confirm you answers.
1. Using Scanning strategy find the name of the three diseases that are resisted by
washing hands?
2. Is antibacterial soap necessary to fight disease?
3. What is the importance of proper handwashing?
4. Which part of the hands are the two best places for germs to hang out?
5. Skim to figure out what is the recommended time duration for washing hands
in this article?
6. Is this statement True or False? Make sure the water is too hot for little hands.
7. Skim the text to answer this question: What is the best way to prevent us from
getting sick?
a. eating
b. dancing
c. hand washing
8. Scan the text to figure out the first step in washing our hands properly

E. Generalization
The teacher will ask the student questions about skimming and scanning
Questions to ask:
1. What are the two reading strategies we’ve discussed?
2. Who can differentiate skimming from scanning?

F. Evaluation

ANG ALAMAT NG MAKAHIYA

A long time ago, there was a rich couple who lived in the country. The man was named
DonDong while the woman was called Iska. They had a beautiful daughter named Maria.
Maria was a good child, industrious and kind. Because of this, many people loved and
admired Maria. Unfortunately, Maria was very shy. Because of this she took many pains
to try to avoid people. She often shied away from conversations and often locked herself
up in her room. The one thing Maria loved was her garden. It was full of colorful, lovely
flowers. Maria tended her garden responsibly and because of this the beauty of her
garden became well-known all over town, and many came to see it and admire it. This
garden made Maria very happy. One day, news came that a group of bandits came and
slaughtered a nearby town. These ruthless men would kill the rich residents and then rob
them of their valuables. The next day, the bandits came to town. Scared witless,
DonDong and Iska decided to hide their young daughter Iska. The two of them hid in
their house while the bandits were trying to break down their door. Iska could only pray
to God to keep her daughter safe. The door finally gave way, and the men came charging
in. They knocked the couple unconscious and raided their house of jewels and money.
And then they tried to look for Maria. Hours later, the couple woke up. Distressed, they
rushed outside to look for Maria, whom they hid in the garden. But Maria was not there.
They looked for her everywhere, all over town, and concluded, despairingly, that perhaps
the bandits did find Maria. So they went back the garden to weep for Maria. At that
moment, Dondong felt something soft brush his feet. He looked down and saw a small
little plant, whose leaves shut close as he brushed it further. He had never seen this plant
before in his life, and neither had Iska. The couple never did find Maria ever again, but
they believed that the shy little plant in the garden was really Maria. God had turned
Maria into a plant to save her life. And so they named the plant "Makahiya", the trait that
Maria was most known for, shyness.

Reading Tasks:
1. Who are the rich couple who lives in the country?
2. Is this statement True or False? They had a handsome son named Ben.
3. Which reading strategy did you use to answer Question No. 2? Was it Scanning or

4. Why do people tend to admire and love Maria? Use Skimming to help you choose the
letter which corresponds to your answer.

b. Because she is lazy.
c. Because she is a good child, industrious and kind.
5. Skim the story to find out if this statement is a True of False.
