SECTION A is compulsory
c) Elimination of parallax : If the image formed by the objective does not lie in the plane
of the cross hairs, there will be a shift in the image due to shift of the eye. Such
displacement of image is termed as parallax. Parallax is removed in two stages.
1) Focusing the eye for distinct vision of cross hairs.
2) Focusing the objective so that image is formed in the plane of cross hairs.
Question 2:
Classify and define engineering surveying /2.5marks
Answer:
Engineering survey: Determination of quantities or afford sufficient data for the designing
of engineering works such as roads and reservoirs, or those connected with sewage
disposal or water supply.
Reconnaissance Survey for determining feasibility and estimation of the scheme.
Preliminary Survey for collecting more information to estimate the cost of the project,
Location Survey to set the work on the ground.
Question 3:
Define the following terms /2.5marks
Magnetic declination, Change point, Line of collimation, Bearing, Military survey
Answer:
Magnetic declination: is the deviation of the compass needle from true north is an angle
called "declination" (or "magnetic declination").
Change point: The point to which both back and fore sight are taken
Line of collimation: It is the line joining the intersection of the cross hair and the optical
center of the objective and its extensions, it is also called line of sight or collimation.
Bearing: Bearing of a line is its direction relative to a given meridian
Military survey: This is used for determining points of strategic importance
SECTION B (The application and analysis skills) / 15 marks
Question 1:
The following interior angles were measured with a sextant in a closed traverse. The bearing of
the line AB was measured as 60o10’ with prismatic compass. Calculate the bearings of all other
lines if <A=140o10’; <B=90o8’; <C=60o22’; <D=69o20’. /7.5marks
Answer:
Question 2:
Fill the missing figures and complete the level book page. Apply usual arithmetic
checks. /7.5marks
Answer:
Question 3:
Plan of an area has shrunk such that a line originally 10cm long now measures as 9.5cm. If
original scale was 1cm=10m, determine
a. Correct length corresponding to measured length of 100m
b. Correct area correspondi to measured area of 100m2
c. Shrinkage factor
d. Shrunk scale/7.5marks
Answer:
This is any assume direction to a well-defined object. It may be useful for small areas.e.g. A
mosque is taken as reference and location of road will be mentioned with respect to this mosque
