Architectural Design Studio -I

Semester I (Section - A)

Activity 1
Objective: Introduction to Architecture, architecture as profession, COA, IIA, NASA etc. Making students comfortable
with Pencils, different grades of pencils (H, HB, B, 2B), different kind of lines, shapes and strokes.

Duration: One class (1 week)

Exercise: Understanding different grades of pencils, sharpening it, setting up sheets and parallel bars. Exercise starts
with making freehand horizontal lines (on landscape A1), vertical lines (on portrait A1), diagonal lines (both top to
bottom and vice versa), curves and all combinations together. Practicing on A1 sheets.

Activity 2
Objective: To make them understand composition of lines

Output: Composition based on the different types of lines.

Submission: Composition based on lines – One A1 sheet

Activity 3
Objective : To develop Writing / Lettering Skills. Exercises start from from freehand writing on landscape A1 sheet. To
make lettering sheet with different fonts and in different sizes

Output: Improving Hand writing skills of students.

Activity 3
Objective: To graphically depict emotions using elements of design on A1 sheet
Output : A1 sheet composition

Activity 4
Objective: Understanding of basics principles of architectural design .To make students understand the meaning of
basic elements of design line, shape, color, textures, value. Also developing the understanding of balance, rhythm,
Emphasis, Proportion, scale, Movement, Contrast and unity.

Exercise: Making a composition on A1 sheet using elements and Principles of Designs.

Output: 2- D Composition

Duration: Two classes (1 week)

Activity 5
Exercise: Interlocking composition

Activity 6
Objective: Spatial relationship. To make them understand positive and negative spaces in 2d composition.
Exercise: To make 2d composition in plan and elevation. Then make a 3d model of the same and develop sense of
positive and negative spaces. Two A1 sheets on each positive and negative composition.

Duration: One classes (2 week)

Activity 7: August 31
Objective: Understanding Anthropometry and space requirement for different activities.

Duration: One class (1 week)

Exercise: Students will measure their own body (Height of the body, Hands, legs etc). After that making different
postures from day to day activities, students will measure the dimensions in which they are comfortable. Activities
such as sitting, reading, sleeping, opening door, cooking food etc. the students will draw these postures on sheet and
give measured dimension to it.

Output: Measurements of Anthropometrics with respect to activities and objects

Submission: Proportionate sketches and the dimensions of the activities – A1 sheets

Activity 8
Objective: Developing sense of space, activities, anthropometry and innovative useful architectural element

Duration: One class (1 week)

Exercise: Designing of basic spaces like kitchen, toilet, office workstation , Auto rikshaw, cubicle.

Output: Useful and innovative above mentioned spaces

Submission: Architectural sheet with Plan, Elevation-2, and section all in A1 sheets and model.

Activity 6: September 14
Objective: Developing sense of space and enclosure, construction of sitting and interacting spaces

Exercise: By the help of Basic and easily available building materials such as Bricks, Ropes etc students will plan and
construct temporary informal sitting and interacting place. The place to exercise this activity will be within campus,
preferably near F1 and architecture block (physically and visually connected)

Students will make sittings, brick jallis, enclosures, keeping in mind the useful and aesthetics of the space. The
structures, made by students will make will be temporary which later can be made durable by applying cement.

Output: Useful Informal sitting space

Submission: A1 sheet composed with pictures of the space, focusing on the element designed by the respective
group.
