Learning Objectives: The learner will be able to solves problems involving functions
(M11GM-Ia-4).

Let’s kick it off!

A. Directions: Identify the given equation if it is a function or not function. Write

your answer on the space provided.
____________ 1. 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 + 1
____________ 2. 𝑥 + 1
____________ 3. 𝑦 = 𝑥² + 4𝑥 + 4

b. a(x) = 5(x)
c. f(x) = 5 (x-1) + 25
d. c(x) = 34 + 3x
e. w(x) = 250 + 10 (x-8)

2. The cost of buying 𝑥 number of meals in a canteen is given by a function
and each meal cost Php 34.00 plus Php 3.00 service fee. _____
3. Kardo charges Php 250.00 for watering the plant per day for 8 hours of
Don Juan. In addition, he charges Php 10.00 per hour. _____
4. Teacher Kaykay received free simcard from DepEd with consumable
data of 34GB worth Php 349.00 for a month, additional charges of Php
10.00 per hour of excess usage. How much Teacher kaykay will be
paying if she exceeds 15 hours in one month? _____
5. Aling Puring’s cassava puto costs Php 25.00 with the first topping, and

Are you taking it?

Questions:

1. What are the steps in solving problem involving function?

2. How do you solve a problem involving function?

3. What is the difference in solving problem involving piecewise and a linear function?

Here’s how it is!

STEPS IN SOLVING PROBLEMS INVOLVING FUNCTIONS

• Understand and explore the problem, read it carefully. Identify what is ask or
determine what the problem required you to do. Get a feel for the whole problem.
• Find a strategy to solve the problem. Setting up an equation, drawing a diagram
or make a chart.
• Carry out the plan, solve the equation
• Look back and reflect on the solution, finalize the answer.
• Draw and label all graphs and pictures clearly
✓ In mathematics, a function is a relation between a set of inputs in a set of
permissible outputs with the property that each input is related to exactly
one output.

Examples:

Directions: Solve the following problems.

1. Aling Nora bought a kilo of Mango cost Php 120.00 plus Php 2.00 for an additional
plastic bag. How much will she pay if she bought 5 kilos of mango?

Solution:
Let 𝑥 = represents the number of mango
𝑚 (𝑥) = 120(𝑥) + 2
𝑚 (5) = 120(5) + 2
= 600 + 2
= 602 Therefore, Aling Nena will pay a total of Php 602.00.

2. Nina is a working student at a certain university. She paid Php 45.00 per hour. How
much is her wage if she worked for 8 hours?

Solution:
Let 𝑥 = represents the number of hours
𝑤 (𝑥) = 45 (𝑥)
= 45(8)
= 360 Therefore, Nina receives Php 360.00 for 8 hours

3. Teacher Kaykay received free simcard from DepEd with consumable data of 34GB
worth Php 349.00 for a month, additional charges of Php 10.00 per hour of excess GB
usage. How much Teacher kaykay will be paying if she exceeds 15 hours in one
month?

Solution:
Let 𝑥 = be the number of months in using sim card data load
𝑠(𝑥) = 10𝑥 ( 15)
𝑠 (1) = 10(1) (15)
= 150 Therefore, Teacher Kaykay will pay Php 150.00.

4. The monthly electric bill of a household is Php 1,200.00 which includes 110kw/hr.
consumption. A charge of Php 80.00 per hour in excess of the allowable monthly
consumption. How much will be the charge of 116kw/hr. consumption?

Solution:
Use piecewise function

1200 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 ≤ 110
𝑒(𝑥) = {
1200 + 80(𝑥 − 110) 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 > 110

𝑒(116) = 1200 + 80(116 − 110)

= 1200 + 80(6)
= 1200 + 480
= 1680
Therefore, the monthly electric bill if consumed 116kw/hr is Php 1,680.

A. Directions: Solve the following problem. (Show your complete solution)

1. A street vendor sells alcohol Php 50 each. However, if a buyer gets more than 30
pcs. the vendor gives a discount of Php10/piece for the succeeding number of alcohols to be
bought. How much will 35 alcohol cost?

General Mathematics Q1 Wk 1 LAS Activity Sheet No. 4 Page 3 of 5

Solution: 50x if x ___ 30
f(x) =
_____ + 40 (x – 30) if x ___ 30

f(35) = 1500 + ___ (35-30)

=_____ + 40(5)
=1500 + 200
=Php_____ Therefore this is the amount of 35 alcohol

2. A proposed motor fare charged P50 for the first 4 km of travel and P7 for each
additional kilometer over the proposed fare. Find the fare function f(x) where x represents the
number of kilometers travelled. How much is the proposed fare for distance of 8km?

Solution:
if 0<x≤4
f(x) =
50+7 |x-4| if x>4

f(x) = 50 + |x - 4|
f(8) = 50 + 7 |8-4|
= 50 + 7 |4|
=50 + 28
= 78

3. Youth club is trying to raise funds by selling stuff in a community fair. The variable
cost to make each stuff if Php25 and it is being sold for Php32. After how many days YC has
already sold out Php650 for their selling stuff while deducted the expense costs Php500. Find
the profit function p(x) where x represents the number of stuff.

Solution:

f(x) = – 25x - 500

f(x) = 7x – 500 ; If 150 stuff were sold, how much is the total profit?

f(150) = 7 (150) – 500

= – 500
= 550 this is the total profit if 150 stuff were sold

4. A mall charges P45 for the first hour or a fraction of an hour for the parking fee. An
additional P8 is charged for every additional hour parking. The parking is operating
from 10am to 10pm every day. (Considering the car owner parked his car from
10am to 2pm)
