Solving system of linear

equations in two variables
by elimination method

Prepared by: Meryl B. Ramos

* Solve:

* Uses
 test your level of understanding/ rational thinking

 engineer, physics major and math majors

 Test your patience and hardwork

 Real-life application
* Example:
Mara bought two T-shirts at 10% and
25% discounts. The sum of the original
prices of the two T-shirts, which was
Php 1, 600, became Php 1, 305 only.
What were the original prices of the
two T-shirts?

* Example #1
2x+y=5
x+y=1

Solution:
2x+y=5 ; equation 1
x+y=1 ; equation 2

-1 ( x+y=1 )
- x-y =-1 ;equation 3
- x-y =-1 ;equation 3
2x+y=5 ;equation 1
x =4

x+y =1 ;equation 2
4+ y =1
y =1-4
y =-3
* Example #2.

2x +3y =7
3x+4y=5
Solution:
2x +3y =7; Equation 1
3x+4y=5; Equation 2
* Solution

Multiply equation 1 by 3:

3(2x+3y=7 )
⟹ 6x+9y=21 ;Equation 3

Multiply equation 2 by -2:

-2( 3x+4y=5 )
⟹-6x-8y=-10 ;Equation 4
* Solution
Eliminate a variable, add equation 3 and 4.

6x+9y=21
(+) -6x-8y=-10
y=11

Substitute the value of y into equation 1:

2x + 3y =7
2x + 3(11) = 7
2x + 33 =7
2x =7 -33
2x= -26
2 2
x = -13
* Example:
Mara bought two T-shirts at 10% and
25% discounts. The sum of the original
prices of the two T-shirts, which was
Php 1, 600, became Php 1, 305 only.
What were the original prices of the
two T-shirts?

* Solution:
 Let,
x=original price of the T-shirt with 10% discount
y= original price of the T-shirt with 25% discount

Original prizes of the two T-shirts:

* Solution:

Prices of the two T-shirts after deducting the
discounts:
* Solution:
  ; Equation 1
; Equation 2

Multiply equation 2 by 100:

⟹ ;Equation 3

Multiply equation 1 by -90:

⟹ ;Equation 4
* Solution:
 Eliminate a variable, add equation 3 and 4.

(+)

Substitute the value of y into equation 1:

* Solution:

Therefore, the original prices were Php 700
and Php 900 for T-shirts bought with 10% and
25% discounts, respectively.
* Exercise:
Think-Pair-Share.

To develop your skills in solving problems involving systems
of linear equations I will give one word problem and think for
5 minutes. Then, choose your pair and answer the word
problem. I choose one pair to share their answer to the class
then discuss their answer.

Problem:
Anne bought two bags at 10% and 50% discounts. The
sum of the original prices of the two bags, which was
Php 2, 300, became Php 1, 450 only. What were the
original prices of the two bags?

Ans.

Php 1,550.00-10% discount

and Php 750.00-50%
discount.
Generalization:
 Interpret the problem into linear equations
 Express the equations in the standard form Ax+By=C,
where A and B are not both zero and C is a real
number.
 Multiply each equation in the system by a constant
that will make the coefficients of the variable (either
x or y) additive inverses of each other.
 Add the resulting equations.
 Substitute the value of the variable found in step 4 to
any two equations in the given system.
* Solve :
Direction: Group works, in a one whole sheet of paper, answer the
following within 15 minutes. Then, I will pick one group to present
their work in front.
(This activity will develop your skills in solving problems and learn to
cooperate and collaborate with your classmates)

1. x+6y =2
5x +6y = 10

2. 3x-2y =1
x+y =3

3. 3x +4y =1
2x-2y =3

4. A computer shop hires 12 technicians and three
supervisors for daily wages of Php 7, 020. If one of the
technicians is promoted to a supervisor, the total wages
become Php 7, 110. How much the daily wage for each
technician and supervisor?
a. Php 400 and Php 590
b. Php 410 and Php 600
c. Php 450 and Php 540
d. Php 550 and Php 530

5. Create at least one word problem involving systems of

linear equations in two variables and solve it by elimination.
* Assignment:
Group work: Write your answer in a medium
bond paper with complete solutions.

What Kind of Monkey Can Fly?

Solve each problem below using the system of
two equations in two variables. Find the
solution in the answer column and notice the
letter next to it. Write this letter in each box
that contains the number of that exercise.
1. Three times the larger of two numbers is equal to four times
the smaller. The sum of the number is 21. Find the numbers.

2. The difference between two numbers is 16.Five times the

smaller is the same as 8 less than twice the larger. Find the
numbers.

3. The larger of two numbers is one more than twice the

smaller. The sum of the numbers is 20 less than three times the
larger. Find the numbers.

4. Two records and three tapes cost 31 dollars. Three records
and two tapes cost 29 dollars. Find the cost of each record and
each tape.
5. The sum of two numbers is the same as
four times the smaller number. If twice the
larger is decreased by the smaller, the result
is 30. Find the numbers.

6. A group of students go out for lunch. If two

have hamburgers and 5 hotdogs, the bill will
be 8 dollars. If 5 have hamburgers and two
have hotdogs, the bill will be 9.50 dollars.
What is the price of the hamburger?
7. The price of a sweater is 5 dollars less than twice
the price of a shirt. If four sweaters and three shirts
cost 200 dollars, find the price of each shirt and
each sweater.
