Business

Application
Lesson Objectives:
 At the end of this lesson, the student should be able to
apply fraction, decimals and percent in solving business
problems and real-life situations.
1. Lilia owns three parcels of land of 12 1/5, 8 2/3, 15 ¾ hectares.
If she sells a total of 18 ½ hectares, how many hectares will be
left?
1 2 3 1
Solution: 12 + 8 + 15 - 18
5 3 4 2
1 2 3 1
= ( 12 + 8 + 15 ) + + + - 18
5 3 4 2
12 + 40 + 45 1
= 35 - 18
60 2
Continuation. ..
97 1 37 30
= 35 + - 18 = 35 + 1 - 18
60 2 60 60
37 1 37 30
= 36 + - 18 = ( 36 - 18 ) + -
60 2 60 60
7 7
= 18 + = 18 hectares
60 60
2. Juanita sells different types of cloth. She cuts a bolt of cloth
containing 100 yards into single-pant cut of 1 ¼ yard each.

a. Into how many pieces was the bolt cut?

b. If Juanita sells the cloth at P150.00 per cut, how much will the
entire bolt sell?
c. If Juanita bought the bolt at P90.00 per yard, how much gross
profit will she earn?
Solution:
A 100 Yards 100 Yards 4 400
1 = = 5 100 x = = 80 pieces
1 5 5
4 4

B. 80 pieces x P150.00/ per cut = P12, 000.00

C. Gross profit = Total Sales – Total Cost
= P12,000.00 – (100 yards at P90.00/yard)
= P12,000.00 – P9,000.00
= P3,000.00
3. A carpenter can finish a stool in 1 ¼ hours. If he works 8 hours a
day, 5 days a week, how many stools can he finish in a week’s
time?
Solution: 8 hours a day 8
1 = 5
1 Hours/stool
4 4

4 32
8 x = Stool/ day
5 5

32
Stool/ day x 5 days/ week
5
= 32 stools/week
4. Dr. Rolando Lopez Bought a dentist’s chair for P50, 000.00. He paid 3/5 of this
amount as down payment. His mother gave him ¼ of the down payment.

a. How much was the down payment?

b. How much did his mother give him?
c. What fractional part of the total cost of the chair was the amount given him
mother?
d. How much of the down payment was shouldered by Dr. Lopez?
e. What fractional part of the total cost of the chair was the down payment
paid by Dr. Lopez?
f. What Fractional part of the total cost of the chair will Dr. Lopez pay?
Solutions:
A Down payment = 3/5 x P50,000.00 = P30,000.00
B Amount from his mother = ¼ x Down payment
= ¼ x P30,000.00
= P7,500.00
C. 1 3 3
x =
4 5 20

D. P30,000 – P7,500.00 = P22,500.00

Solutions:
E Share of Down payment paid by Dr. Lopez
Total Cost of chair
P22,500.00 9
= =
P50,000.00 20

F 1 – Fractional part paid by his mother.
