THE MOHS SCALE

1. A knife with a steel blade has an estimated hardness value of 6.5 points. Taking this
into account, answer the questions:
a) What minerals would it scratch?

b) Could it be scratched by a quartz mineral? Reason the answer.

2. During a field trip 5 minerals are collected to identify them. Ordered from greater to
lesser hardness considering the following indications:
 Mineral A is scratched with quartz and with a copper coin.
 The mineral B is scratched by a diamond.
 The mineral C scratches the steel blade, but not the topaz.
 Mineral D is scratched by the glass, but not by the copper coin.
 Mineral E is scratched with the fingernail and with the plaster.

b) Can you guess what numbers in the Mohs scale would they have?
