COMPONENTS OF THE JRAHS CRAYFISH SUBSYSTEM

COMPONENT FUNCTION

Tanks Provides an intensive living area for the

crayfish.

Holds water for them to live in

Filled using captured rainwater off f1.1 into

a storage tank.

Feed other additives can be added when

necessary

Solids filter
Removes the particles of waste from
yabbies and leftover feed, if it should
happen

Particles catch on the webbing(Leaves, grass

clippings) which is hosed out to clean
regularly

Pump
Pump keeps the filter system working

Aids in water movement to rotate around

the tank so the waste moves and can be
filtered.

Aerator(venturic)
Oxygenated air is added to the system. The
oxygen comes from the surrounding air.

Air in the main tank is depleted by the

yabbies/fish using respiration.

Drain pipe & Valve

Tank is emptied to dump water if ammonia
levels become toxic. It is released into the
orange orchard.

Tank is also emptied after the yabbies are

harvested.

Overflow pipe
Excess water is released when the water
level becomes too high after rainfall.
Biofilter Ammonia(NH3) originates from the
excretion from the gills of aquatic animals
and from the decomposition of organic
matter. As ammonia is highly toxic, this can
be converted to a less toxic form of
nitrite(NO2) by Nitrosomonas bacteria and
then to an even less toxic form of nitrate
(NO3) by nitrobacter

Power supply
Provides the power to run the pump

Shade cloth cover Covers the entire tank to reduce

leaves falling in, stop
birds(waterbirds) from eating the
yabbies, stops the water from
getting too hot in summer, stops
creatures from falling in, such as
bees

Winch

Lifts and lowers the birdproof

netting and the shade cloth cover
safely and efficiently.

Red safety bars

Prevents shade cloth
