Receipt of NZTA funding - success at last

Thank you to all those who helped in achieving this great result over the last 6 - 10 years (or so…) A big
shout out and thank you to the Wellington Branch for agreeing to work with us. What it means to the
club and our members - the possibility of being able to invest together at a later date should we find a
suitable site.

Hunting Stories

Whanganui Hunt
Makowhai Station, situated in the upper
reaches of the Waitotara Valley, boasts of
22,000 acres of hill country, perfect for a
good stalk. Fallow deer are in abundance,
access is relatively good and the hosts Iain
and Melody just absolutely amazing.
Rob, Greame, Peter, Wendy, Jaymi and
Cameron set out of Wellington at 8:00am
and arrived at the grounds just before
lunch. Quad bike access is very good and
there are some good tracks where you can
get the joints going and stalk those hinds.
The hunting group was split into two groups that went in opposite directions to assure hunter safety.
Much success was attributed to the ease of access and the huge number of animals. Goats, Pigs and
Fallow Deer were in abundance. Shooting distance was approximately anywhere from thirty to 500
meters plus. It was quite unfortunate that one of our members featured in an accident in his eagerness
to shoot his first deer at 30 meters away.

Adopt a hut

Our branch is looking at

being involved in the
maintenance of the
Tauanui Hut, up in the
Aorangi Forest Park with
DOC support. It is
approximately 3km up
from a small river from a
forestry road. It is a
standard six bunk hut
with fireplace, toilets.
Water is available from
the nearby stream. This
hut in particular is one of the very few that can be accessed by quad bikes. Let Greame know if you are
keen to come along to see the hut and explore the Aorangis. The idea is to spend a bit of time in the
area and become familiar, where the deer are. Standard Hut tickets(blue) can be purchased through
DOC are at $5.00 per adult for each night’s stay and can be left at the honesty box at the hut.
