DEFINITION:

Filibustero/Filibuster- an individual engaging in unauthorized


warfare against a foreign country.
EL FILIBUSTERISMO WAS WRITTEN TO SHOW THE FILIPINO PEOPLE
OF THE ABUSES, RACISM, AND THE NEED FOR POLITICAL REFORM.
1887- Rizal started his 2nd novel El Filibusterismo in October of
1887 while he was at Calamba Laguna.
-It is assumed to have been written against the
background of threats and oppressions towards the Rizal
family due to the so-called Calamba agrarian problem.

1888- Rizal made some changes in the plot and revised the
chapter already written while in London.

1891- On March 29, 1891 Rizal finished the manuscript in


Biarritz.
-Due to the lack of funding, Rizal had to move
from Brussels to Ghent where the cost of
living as well as the price of printing was
cheaper.

-Rizal pawned his jewelry for additional funds,


specifically to pay for the down payment for
the printing.
-July 1891, Rizal wrote a letter to Basa stating that the
publication of the El Fili will have to stop if no
money comes.

-As Rizal has feared, on August 6 of 1891 the printing of


El Fili came to a halt.

-47 pages from the original manuscript were erased to


save expenses.
-Rizal’s roommate in Germany.

-Later became a General in the


Philippine Revolution.

-Canvassed the printing press for El


Fili(Ocampo,2012).

-Delivered proofs and revision of El Fili to


F. Meyer Van Loo Press.
-Recognized as the “Savior of Fili”.

-Funded the publication of El


Filibusterismo.

-Was given the original manuscript and


an autographed copy of El Fili.
