Chapter II

METHODOLOGY

The chapter presents the methods and procedures used in the study, including

the research design, role of the researcher, research participants, data collection

procedure, research procedures, data analysis, trustworthiness and credibility and

ethical consideration.

Research Design

The researcher used the qualitative design to know the perceptions of the School

Administration, Students and Language Teachers of Nabunturan National

Comprehensive High School on the present year. Naturalistic approach was used

wherein researcher applied in-depth interview to gather valuable information.

Brown and Lee (2019) provide a brief overview of interviewing techniques for

qualitative research. The authors discussed different types of interviews and their

purposes, including structured, semi-structured, and unstructured interviews. They also

highlighted the importance of preparing interview questions and establishing rapport

with participants to ensure the quality of data collected. Additionally, the authors

emphasized the ethical considerations involved in interviewing, such as obtaining

informed consent and ensuring anonymity and confidentiality of participants. This article

provides a useful resource for researchers who are planning to use interviewing as a

method for data collection in their qualitative studies.

Research Locale

The study was conducted in Nabunturan National Comprehensive High School

(NNCHS), located along National Highway Poblacion Nabunturan, Compostela Valley,

Philippines.

The town of Nabunturan was once a barangay of Municipality of Compostela.

The origin of the name is from buntod, the Cebuano term for "mountain." The word

"Nabunturan" means "surrounded by mountains" in English. The early settlement was

governed by a headman called Bagani, but was under the supervision of the Municipal

District President of Compostela over matters concerning civil affairs. For the

maintenance of peace and order, the area was under the immediate supervision of the

Philippine Constabulary Detachment of Camp Kalaw, Monkayo. From barangay

Jaguimitan in the north to barangay Mawab (now a municipality in the south), the whole

Compostela town was divided into two (2) municipal districts: the district of Monkayo,

and the district of Compostela, with the latter's seat of local government in barangay

Nabunturan, now the municipality of Nabunturan.

Before the construction of the national road traversing Nabunturan, the place

was little known; but despite the threat of malaria, which was prevalent at the time,

pioneers ventured into the area. Mansaka natives settled their lives here in the

municipality of Mawab to Barangay Bangkerohan, Montevista. The original site of

Barangay Nabunturan was situated along the Libasan-Saosao Provincial Road, about 4

km from the present Poblacion site.

The public school system was under the supervision of the Supervising

Teacher stationed in the Kalaw Settlement for schools in the district of Monkayo.

When the road was constructed in 1938, many Visayan settlers and pioneers

came to Nabunturan and made it their home. By that time, the establishment of the

Bureau of Public Works (BPW) camp settled in Nabunturan. Many business trades and

establishments poured in and Nabunturan was established as a rural community.

In 1941, the Second World War broke out in the country. A new hiding place for

guerrillas and USAFFE Contingents spread in Nabunturan. But during the Japanese

occupation in Mindanao, Nabunturan became a Japanese Kempetai Garrison. After the

war, the Japanese were repulsed back to Davao City, and the camp regained its status

as the center of life and business in Compostela Valley. Camp Kalaw was destroyed

and abandoned.

Nabunturan is the capital town of Compostela Valley found along the

northeastern part of the province of Davao, 88 kilometers away from Davao City and 33

kilometers away from Tagum City. It is subdivided into twenty-eight barangays.

Nabunturan National Comprehensive High School is located at Poblacion,

Nabunturan National Highway. It consists of both Junior High School and Senior High

School curriculum. Currently, the school has 22 Grade XI sections and with 1, 037

student population.
At present, the Senior high school department has four storey, two storey and one

storey faculty room buildings. One three storey building for Grade XI students and

laboratories are still on process. There are sixty faculty and staff headed by the School

Principal and Assistant School Principal.

Research Participants

The sampling method that will be used in the study is Random sampling. The

research respondents of the study were chosen according to their contribution on the

topic. They were the HUMSS students in grade XI of Nabunturan National

Comprehensive High School who is concerned and affected to the issue. Furthermore,

the respondents will be the proponent’s subject for in-depth interview to gather different

opinions and perspectives upon the English learning Motivation on Grade 11 HUMSS

students as a mode of medium to students.

A study of Malterud (2001), interprets that the various strategies for systematic

collection, organization and interpretation of textual material obtained while talking with

people or through observation. The aim of such research is to investigate the meaning

of social phenomena is experienced by the people themselves.

Research Instruments

(In this study, the researchers will provide questionnaires for the collection of the

data. Questions from the questionnaires will base from the topic pertaining English

learning Motivation.

The questionnaire consists of 10 questions in which the collection of the data

includes the experiences and realizations of the students struggling to the English

subject. Selected students from the selected grade level and strand are the participants

of the study.

Validation of Research Instruments

The researcher drafted pre-test, post-test and modules of cooperative learning

approach checked by a Master English teacher and then validated by three Master or

Doctoral English Professors for suggestions, and further comments. Comments and

suggestions were considered as the basis for the revisions of the Instruments.

The research’s pre-test and module were pilot tested to the senior high school

students other than the respondents of the study.

Research Procedure
The researchers should create a letter of approval to be passed in School

Principal for his/her to grant the proposal. When the proposed study gained its approval,

the researcher will ask permission to the participants to answer the questionnaire and

the researcher will provide their set of questionnaires then give it the assigned or

chosen participants for them to answer.

After the survey, the data will be collected, and the researchers will be gathering

all the data. Afterwards, the researcher will analyze the collected data.

Ethical Consideration

To avoid ethical complication in the research process, the researcher used

informed consent form, which each prospective or related research participant were

furnished or provided copies with. The purpose, procedure and benefits of the

researcher and the voluntary nature of their participants were explained to the

researcher to participants. The procedures used in ascertaining the protection of

confidentially were likewise explained.
