NARRATIVE REPORT

Apprenticeship serves an important purpose, not only for teaching students about

their chosen profession, but also for exposing them to the realities of being a worker.

Students were exposed to actual labor related to the course they were pursuing. Those

with no prior experience were also able to work and gain knowledge concurrently. The

apprentices were able to expand their knowledge of their chosen discipline and put their

college education into practice through apprenticeship. It contributed to the competency

development of the trainees. Evidently, if a student is competent enough, they will be

able to do things successfully, and the training will have enhanced their professionalism

in interacting with people. After completing the training, the trainees were able to

appropriately manage situations and interact with others in the workplace. Additionally,

they were able to collaborate with everyone. Apprenticeship also improved the critical

thinking skills and self-discipline of students who received their training in an institution.

Their ability to make decisions and assess relevant factors have been improved.

In addition to gaining work experience, the apprenticeship program provided

trainees with the opportunity to meet actual professionals and individuals holding

various positions within the institution. The trainees were able to adjust to other

individuals' characteristics and attitudes. Apprenticeship calls for diligence and focus.

The trainees took the apprenticeship seriously as a potent instrument for preparing for

the next phase of their professional lives.

FIRST WEEK OF APPRENTICESHIP

JULY 3 - 7 2023

On the first day of the week, students were deployed to the Philippine-Sino

Center for Agricultural Technology, where they were given a short tour of the institution,

met the faculty, workers, and staff, and became acquainted with new faces in the office.

Mr. Val Garcia, the supervisor of the Crop Protection department, gave a brief history of

PhilSCAT to the students in their showroom and in the workshop containing the

machinery used to harvest the rice in their fields on the second day, additionally, he

gave reading materials for the students to be familiarized more to the pest and diseases

that they about to encounter on their monitoring. The third and fourth day was devoted

to daily monitoring of the fields that Mr. Garcia assigned to the students, that included a

small notebook detailing what they observed on the field and what recommendations

they must make to ameliorate the problem on their respective fields. On the final day of

the week, the faculty instructed the students to prepare for land preparation and to

practice seedling pulling, allowing them to experience how difficult it is to properly pull

rice. Nonetheless, the students enjoyed chatting and laughing with the women who

were in the field, who also instructed them on how to correctly bundle rice.

JULY 10 - 14 2023

The faculty informed the students that they would be roughing the field during the

second week. Crop Protection Department and Crop Science Department collaborated

on rouging, which means walking across a field and treading on weeds until they are

completely buried, or manually removing the weeds. Mr. Garcia instructed the students

on Tuesday to prepare to meet Mr. Jerwin R. Undan for the introduction to water agar

isolation; however, water agar was not available on Tuesday. On the positive note, he

has just altered the students' disease collection medium from water agar to Potato

Dextrose Agar (PDA). Additionally, he gave the students a tour of the laboratory and

introduced them to unfamiliar apparatus. Wednesday through Friday were devoted to

field monitoring for the data that will be used for their paper requirements.
