Foreword
This South African standard was approved by National Committee SABS/TC 081/SC 04,
Construction materials, products and test methods – Road and pavement materials testing, in
accordance with procedures of the SABS Standards Division, in compliance with annex 3 of the
WTO/TBT agreement.

This document was published in June 2014.

SANS 3001 consists of different parts under the general title Civil engineering test methods.

Parts GR of the SANS 3001 series contain methods for testing gravels, sands and soils.

Annex A forms an integral part of this document. Annex B is for information only.

Introduction
This method is used to determine the percentage of lime or cement necessary to satisfy the
demand of clay minerals in soils and gravels.

Apparatus dimensions that are critical to the outcome of the method or procedure are given with a
tolerance. All other dimensions are nominal and should be considered fit for purpose.

This test method is classified as Group: B, Rating: 4, Activity: GR, in accordance with the
requirements of the South African Construction Education and Training Authority (CETA).

3 Definitions
For the purposes of this document, the following definitions apply.

3.1
constant mass
less than 0,1 % change in mass after two successive (more than 1 h) periods of drying

3.2
initial consumption of stabilizer
minimum percentage of lime (ICL) or cement (ICC), to the nearest 0,5 %, that when added to a soil
or gravel gives a constant pH
