Section D (FALL 2022)

Design of Roof Truss by AISC LRFD Method
Complex Civil Engineering Problem (Design Project)

DESIGNS DATA

Design members of the given interior roof truss by LRFD methods of AISC. Select double angles built-up
section for top and bottom chords and any lightest section (single angle, double angle, channel, or W
section) for vertical and inclined members. Use the welded connection. Also, design lightest angle or
channel section as purlin along with total number of G.I. 75x20 sheets required for roofing system. Use
A36 steel (Fy = 250 MPa, Fu = 400 MPa, E = 200,000 MPa) and the following load data.

R = 1150 – N
N = your registration number (e.g., 170 for 2022 – Civ – 170)
S= Spacing of truss = 3 + (R – 910)/50 (meter)
L = Length of truss = 10 + (R – 910)/5 (meter)
• No of truss = 11
• Self-weight of purlins = 11 kg/m2
• Self-weight of bracing elements = 3.5 kg/m2
• Dead load of roofing (G.I Corrugated sheets) = 19 kg/m2
• Insulation boards = 7 kg/m2
• Miscellaneous load = 6.5 kg/m2

• Snow load
100 kg/m2 for   10 (for no roof access)
(113 – 1.3 ) kg/m2 for 10 <   20
(143 – 2.8 ) kg/m2 for 20 <   30 or 60 kg/m2 for  > 30
• Wind load
Ww = 1250.Cq N/m2 (Assume an appropriate Cq value for roof inclination)
Windward roof
 = 0 to 9.5 Cq = 0.7 outward (-ve)
 = 9.5 to 37.0 Cq = 0.9 outward (-ve) or 0.3 inward (+ve) whichever is critical
 = 37 to 45 Cq = 0.4 inward
 = > 45 Cq = 0.7 inward

Leeward roof
Cq = 0.7 outward (-ve)

Use the Thayer Formula to estimate the self-weight of truss.

w  L 
W =  + 0.5  kg / m 2
S  8.5 

Where,

W = weight of truss (kg/m2)

w = Total gravity load per unit plan acting on truss (kg/m2)

S = Spacing of truss (m)

L = Span of truss (m)

At the end, calculate the total quantity of the steel (sum of weight of all members) used in the truss in
tons. Ignore the weight of connections.

Instructions:

• Do your work individually and write report in your own language in clear and understandable manner
with proper citation of references, if used.
• Use SAP2000 or SABLE to determine the forces in the truss members.
• Design tension members ignoring block shear.
• Design compression members using design equations and AISC Tables as appropriate.
• Draw neat and clean sketches to show your design details on full size scholar sheet (AutoCAD
drawing is optional).
• You may also use figures and tables to support your work, if needed.
• For report, use Font 12 of Times New Roman and 1.5 space lines.
