Introduction
Self-centeredness, also known as
egocentrism or narcissism, refers
to a psychological and behavioral
trait characterized by a
heightened focus on oneself to
the detriment of others. It
involves an excessive
preoccupation with one's own
needs, desires, and well-being
while often displaying a lack of
empathy or consideration for the
feelings and perspectives of
others.
Benefits of Self Centeredness
SELF-CARE: A DEGREE OF SELF-
CENTEREDNESS CAN ENCOURAGE
INDIVIDUALS TO PRIORITIZE THEIR
OWN WELL-BEING AND ENGAGE IN SELF-
CARE PRACTICES. TAKING TIME FOR
SELF-CARE, SUCH AS EXERCISE,
RELAXATION, AND HEALTHY EATING, CAN
LEAD TO IMPROVED PHYSICAL AND
MENTAL HEALTH.

GOAL ACHIEVEMENT: A MODERATE LEVEL

OF SELF-CENTEREDNESS CAN DRIVE
INDIVIDUALS TO PURSUE THEIR GOALS
AND AMBITIONS WITH DETERMINATION
AND FOCUS. WHEN INDIVIDUALS
PRIORITIZE THEIR OWN ASPIRATIONS,
THEY MAY BE MORE MOTIVATED TO WORK
HARD AND ACHIEVE THEIR OBJECTIVES.

INDEPENDENCE: SELF-CENTERED
INDIVIDUALS OFTEN HAVE A STRONG
SENSE OF INDEPENDENCE AND SELF-
RELIANCE. THEY MAY BE LESS LIKELY
TO RELY ON OTHERS FOR THEIR NEEDS,
WHICH CAN LEAD TO A GREATER SENSE
OF AUTONOMY AND SELF-SUFFICIENCY.
BOUNDARY-SETTING: BEING SELF-
CENTERED CAN HELP INDIVIDUALS
ESTABLISH AND MAINTAIN HEALTHY
BOUNDARIES IN THEIR RELATIONSHIPS.
THIS CAN PREVENT THEM FROM BEING
OVERLY ACCOMMODATING OR TAKEN
ADVANTAGE OF BY OTHERS.

ASSERTIVENESS: SELF-CENTERED
INDIVIDUALS MAY BE MORE ASSERTIVE
IN EXPRESSING THEIR OPINIONS AND
ADVOCATING FOR THEIR NEEDS. THIS
ASSERTIVENESS CAN BE A VALUABLE
SKILL IN VARIOUS SITUATIONS,
INCLUDING WORK AND PERSONAL
RELATIONSHIPS.
negatives of self
centeredness
Strained Relationships: Self-centered individuals often
struggle to maintain healthy relationships because they
prioritize their own needs and desires over those of
others. This can lead to conflicts, misunderstandings,
and emotional distance in personal and professional
relationships.

Lack of Empathy: Self-centered people frequently lack

empathy, making it difficult for them to understand or
consider the feelings and perspectives of others. This can
result in insensitivity and a lack of support for those in
their lives.

Isolation: Over time, self-centeredness can lead to social

isolation as people may distance themselves from
individuals who consistently put their own needs first.
This isolation can contribute to feelings of loneliness and
detachment.

Manipulative Behavior: Some self-centered individuals

resort to manipulation or exploitation to get what they
want. They may use others for their own gain without
regard for the well-being of those they manipulate.

Conflict and Drama: Self-centeredness often leads to

conflicts and drama in interpersonal interactions. This
can create a toxic atmosphere in relationships,
workplaces, and social settings.
History relating to Self-
Centeredness

1. Ancient Philosophy: Self-centeredness has been a topic of

philosophical inquiry since ancient times. In ancient Greece,
for example, philosophers like Aristotle and Plato discussed
the importance of balance between self-interest and the
greater good of society. Plato's concept of the "egoistic
soul" and Aristotle's idea of finding virtue as a mean
between excess and deficiency are early explorations of
self-centeredness.
2. Religious and Ethical Traditions: Many religious and ethical
traditions address the idea of self-centeredness in their
teachings. For instance, Buddhism emphasizes the
importance of overcoming attachment and self-centered
desires to achieve enlightenment and alleviate suffering.
In Christianity, humility and selflessness are often seen as
virtuous qualities that contrast with self-centeredness.
3. Psychological Theories:
The field of psychology has
explored self-centeredness
extensively. Sigmund Freud's
psychoanalytic theory, for
example, introduced the
concept of the "id," which
represents the instinctual
and self-centered aspects of
human behavior. Freud
argued that ego and
superego functions are
necessary to balance and
regulate the id's self-
centered desires.
Conclusion
In conclusion, self-centeredness is a
multifaceted aspect of human behavior and
personality that has been a subject of
philosophical, psychological, and cultural
exploration throughout history. It refers to
a heightened focus on one's own needs,
desires, and well-being, often at the expense
of considering the feelings and perspectives
of others. While a degree of self-
centeredness is natural and necessary for
personal well-being and goal pursuit,
excessive self-centeredness can lead to a
range of negative consequences, including
strained relationships, a lack of empathy,
isolation, and emotional problems.
Student Reflection
MY REFLECTIONS ON SELF-CENTEREDNESS
HAVE LED ME TO APPRECIATE ITS COMPLEXITY
AND THE IMPORTANCE OF FINDING A
HARMONIOUS EQUILIBRIUM BETWEEN SELF-
INTEREST AND CONSIDERATION FOR OTHERS.
WHILE SELF-CENTEREDNESS IS A NATURAL
PART OF BEING HUMAN, NURTURING
EMPATHY AND FOSTERING MEANINGFUL
CONNECTIONS WITH OTHERS ENRICHES MY
LIFE AND MAKES ME A MORE COMPASSIONATE
AND FULFILLED INDIVIDUAL. IT'S A JOURNEY
OF SELF-DISCOVERY AND GROWTH THAT I
INTEND TO CONTINUE AS I NAVIGATE THE
INTRICACIES OF HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS AND
SOCIETAL DYNAMICS.
