HSC Mathematics Advanced

Assessment 1
Mathematical Applications Project 2023

Date Issued: 30 January 2023 Marks: 20

Date Due: 6 March 2023 (before 4:45pm) Weighting: 25

Outcomes:
MA12-9, MA12-10 plus one additional syllabus outcome of student’s choice

TASK:

You are to research and investigate how one area of the syllabus is applied in real world
applications.

Part A
You are to create some form of presentation to teach about this topic
This could be through:
● Live presentation in class (with PowerPoint or poster)
● Guided worksheets or
● Video presentation

Your presentation should include the following components:

A description of the real world application (e.g. real world problem that mathematics is used for)
An explanation of how the mathematics is applied to this real world problem
2 worked examples with guidance on how to apply the mathematics to real world problems within
the area
A discussion of the benefit of Mathematics in this Industry area

Part B
You should also create a worksheet that the class can practice what they have learnt from this
concept.
This worksheet should include 5 example questions that relate to the real world problem of
interest and should be achievable following your guided instructions.

Examples of applications you might like to explore:

● How calculus is applied to epidemiology (the study of diseases in populations) in

order to model and predict spread of diseases

● How Mathematics is used in data analytics in order to make smart decisions about
an individual based on their computer browsing history

● Mathematical principles reflected in nature (e.g. growth of plants, Fibonacci

sequences etc and why they occur)

Interesting Resources to look at:

Submission Details:
● Upload or email presentation to Canvas/Edumate/yimin.jiang3@tafensw.edu.au
including all handouts, PowerPoint presentations, etc.
● Present in class before due date if this is your chosen presentation method
