RECREATIONAL GAMES
(MODULE 1)

Prepared by:

Sherilyn Em B. Bobillo
LESSON 1: Nature of Leisure, Recreation and Physical Recreation
OBJECTIVES:

1. Understand the distinction between leisure, recreation and physical recreation.

2. Cite examples or activities related to leisure, recreation and physical recreation.
LEISURE
The free time a person has when not working or sleeping.

The term Leisure has myriad meanings and the exact meaning remains a topic of discussion. The Greeks
believe that the people work to have leisure and they viewed leisure as self-development. Leisure is often
referred to as unobligated time- time that is not devoted to work or life-sustaining activities. Still, others
refer to leisure as a state of being in which the mind feels free and unencumbered. Another view of leisure
is that it is an antidote to working life.

Life Without Leisure?

What would life be like for the child without moments of play? What would it be like for all
human beings to be without any leisure at all and for the chance for its recreative use? Leisure
is a permanently fertile ground for self-realization. It is a perpetual fountain for discovering
new interests and for uncovering hidden talents. Leisure is the pasture for self-cultivation. The
joy of originating, the pleasure of doing, and the satisfaction of accomplishment - all of these
await us in our leisure.
_____
Adapted from thoughts by Charles Brightbill

RECREATION
An Activity you choose to do in your leisure time because you want to.

Aren’t play and recreation the same thing? Not if we adhere to the more accepted definition of the two
terms. It is widely accepted that recreation refers to activity, as in participation in recreation or recreation
activity. Although participation in the recreation activity can be play, not all recreation is a play. A
recreation activity that has a structured time frame or lacks true voluntary participation may or may not be
a play.
For example: If someone belongs to a team with a set time and rules for practice, that is more likely
recreation than a play.
PHYSICAL RECREATION
A physical activity you choose to do in your Leisure time (NOT Serious sport)
Discussion: What are the main differences between sport and physical recreation?

WORKSHEET #1: THE GROWTH IN LEISURE TIME

List 10 reasons why you think that people have more leisure time now than they did 50 years ago.

WORKSHEET #2: PHYSICAL RECREATION V SPORTS

LESSON 2: Recreation Characteristics, Values, Benefits and Program Planning.

RECREATION

OBJECTIVES:

1. Enumerate the characteristics, Values and benefits of Recreation

2. Create Program/Activities that guided by program planning.
3. Learn the importance of Program Planning.

Characteristics of Recreation
1. Recreation involves an activity
- The concept of activity for recreation depends in action done mentally, physically, or emotionally. It is not
easy to detect an action by observing a person reading a book, listening to music or watching performance,
nevertheless, there is an action involved.
2. Recreation has no single form
- There is so much flexibility on the part of the person on his choices from the wide range of activities. The
only guiding factor of the individual is the motivational desire in his choices and the enjoyment he gets.
3. Recreation is determined by motivation
- The individual determines his activity largely by a desire, motive or incentive. His ultimate goal still remains
as enjoyment and satisfaction.
4. Recreation occurs in un-obligated Time.
- A recreationist should be aware of defining clearly to what particular time he or she partakes the leisure
activity. Any act of work falls under obligated time. Therefore, any enjoyment from work may not be
considered recreation.
5. Recreation is Participated Voluntarily
- There can be no imposition of by force taken in recreational activity. Recreation is provided to open the road
for an individual for self-discovery, self-expression, creativity and self-satisfaction.

6. Recreation is Universally Sought and Practiced

- Activities for recreation is extensive that they encompass the total human being regardless of sex, race and
nationality.
7. Recreation is Purposeful
- Anyone involved in recreational activity has a purpose in securing satisfaction and pleasure.
8. Recreation is Flexible
- Recreational activities can be organized or unorganized. Systematic recreation is found among recreational
institutions or leisure education while unorganized activities may be done through self or of no specific
program.
9. Recreation has By-products
- The best motivation for an individual to do recreation activities is “Reward” after an activity either physical
health, emotional stability, or social fitness.

Values of Recreation

RECREATION PROGRAM PLANNING

What is recreation planning?

Recreation planning can be defined as a process through which information, attitudes, values and needs are
reviewed and evaluated by and with the community in an on-going fashion. This is done to identify a range of actions
which, if implemented, will achieve better recreation outcomes for the community than would otherwise have been
achieved if things had been left to take their natural course. Further, effective recreation planning will provide a
range of personal, social, economic and environmental benefits to the community with these being delivered in a
sustainable manner.

Planning for recreation facilities, activities, programs and services

Recreation planning (or as it is frequently referred to, leisure planning, or leisure and recreation planning) can cover
a wide range of topics. For instance, it can be concerned with the planning of: recreation facilities recreation
activities or programs recreation support services

Recreation facilities
Recreation facilities are the physical assets which accommodate recreation activities. They can be natural or built
assets which are specifically provided and managed for recreational purposes or they may be assets which fulfill
some other primary role and which are occasionally used for recreation. Often, facilities are designed to fulfill several
roles. Here is a list of examples of recreation facilities: a review of the list indicates that while some are solely or
predominantly recreational, others serve quite different purposes as well as a recreational role:
1. sports halls
2. school halls
3. football ovals
4. playgrounds
5. libraries
6. trails
7. wetlands lakes
8. neighborhood house

Recreation activities and programs

Comparing with facilities, recreation activities or programs are the pursuits people take part in to gain the leisure
benefits they are seeking. Recreation activities and programs can be highly structured in terms of their timing as well
as:
1. Tree planting
2. Coastal clean-up
3. Film Showing for Children
4. Parlor games for Children
5. Gardening
6. Dancing
7. Singing

Recreation services
Finally, recreation services help people find information about recreation activities as well as how to get to and take
part in these activities. Recreation services include:
1. information–brochures, websites, signposts, newsletters, and maps
2. transport–whether private services, public and community buses recreation leadership –including
management, planning officers, programmers, leaders, and trainers
3. support services –such as club grants, discounted fees, and leadership training.

The recreation planning process can be divided into three components.

1. Pre-planning Defining the planning context and process and establishing goals, objectives and principles.
2. Recreation planning research Undertaking research into a wide range of recreation-related issues e.g.
demographics, existing recreation opportunities, community activities, community needs, and leisure trends
3. Preparing the plan Evaluating the findings of the first two components, determining the implications to the
future provision of recreation opportunities and preparing a set of recommendations for action. The
recommendations are often provided with timeframes, budgets, action responsibilities and performance
monitoring strategies. They are also frequently set within the context of the mission statements,
development principles, objectives and goals of the organization for which the planning has been carried
out.
