Exercise No. 16
ENAMEL AND DENTIN FORMATION
Enamel is produced by ameloblast of the enamel organ and
dentin by odontoblast of the adjacent mesenchyme. In the initial
secretory stage dentin is produced first by the odontoblasts.
Enamel matrix is then deposited directly on the surface of the
previously formed dentin by secretory stage ameloblasts thus,
making the future dentinoenamel junction. Then the secretory
stage ameloblast continue to produce enamel matrix until
thickness of the future enamel is achieved.
Objectives:
The student should be able to:
1. Study the development of the enamel and dentin.
2. Compare the formation of enamel and dentin.
3. Draw the development of the enamel and dentin and label
completely the parts that are seen microscopically.
Materials: Textbooks and reference books, drawing materials
Procedure:
Draw the development of enamel and dentin and label
completely the parts that are seen microscopically.
Questions:
1. What are the organic substances of the dentinoenamel junction
which favors the spread of dental caries in the area.
2. What is the appearance of the dentinoenamel junction? Give
the significance of these.
