Readers, Writers, and Texts Reflection

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this poem and all the elements that worked in harmony to

compliment it so well. One element that really took this poem to the next level was the figurative

language aspect. I liked how the author metaphorically described the main character as a bomb.

The author said “I reach out in love, my hands are guns” this is giving the impression the main

character wants to help and empathizes for those suffering. But ultimately the main character is

unable to help the soldiers serving their country. The main character sees publishing newspaper

articles about the war as bombs. Due to the fact all they’re able to do is publish articles.

Figuratively the bombs signify the news that is being published. It’s almost as if the main

character feels like they are causing the destruction by sharing the news with others. The

figurative language the author added to the poem leads readers to bigger ideas and lets readers

connect emotionally to the writing. The last line really resonated with me “another village

explodes” because this proves society is no better than it used to be. This society is in a repetitive

process that is doing more harm than good and far from ending. The main character's society has

been and still is a dangerous environment. This circles back to the title “It is Dangerous to Read

the Newspaper” as the main character is writing the newspaper experiencing the trauma and

suffering through writing the current events. This comes to show the main character is

consistently writing about these sorts of events. This not only shows how damaged the society is

but also the damage done to the main character. The main character has come to a realization of

how terrorizing their society has become. Anyone who has read the newspaper will also

experience and undergo what the main character is feeling. This concludes back to the title “It is

Dangerous to Read the Newspaper” as anyone with any sort of emotions will feel absolutely

mortified by what their society has turned into.
