    A half wave rectifier circuit is shown with a diode and resistive load RL. During the positive half cycle of the input voltage, the diode conducts and drops all the voltage across RL. During the negative half cycle, the diode acts as an open circuit and the output voltage is zero. A capacitor is connected from the rectifier output to ground to filter the output voltage. The capacitor quickly charges at the start of each cycle and gradually discharges through RL after the peak of the input voltage. The variation in the capacitor voltage due to charging and discharging is called the swell voltage, which is undesirable. The swell can be reduced by increasing the value of the filter capacitor or the load capacitance.
