QUARTER 1- MODULE 4
RESPECT INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES

GOVERNMENT PROPERTY: NOT FOR SALE

Demonstrate Acceptance of
Others Without Discrimination

Try to close your eyes and imagine that we all have the same hairstyle, same
shirt on, same behavior, same state of mind, and same abilities. How would
that make you feel?

It is often said that no two individuals are exact duplicates; they differ
from each other in some way or the other. It is important to recognize
and understand this uniqueness in individuals. Such a similarity or
difference between persons reveals individual differences.

It happens in ourhow
to mind; -day
to-day
andlife
whywhen we see
people people
appear around
similar us. A question
or different to eachcomes
other? For example, when
we think of physical appearance, we ask ourselves why some people have dark or fair
complexion, why some are tall and some are short. When we think about psychological
characteristics, we often come across people who are very talkative or less talkative, some
laugh too much, and whereas, others take too much time even to smile.

Understanding someone who differs significantly from you can prove a challenge, as you
may have no experience with his/her ways of life or customs. However, being understanding
of differences is important in maintaining harmony in your relationships.

This module will provide you information and experiences that will help you understand such
similarities and variations among individuals. You will learn to accept and embrace them, be
respectful of them, and use the experiences with them to also grow as a person instead of
fighting against such differences.

What is It
Individual Differences

We all know that whatever lies around us in the form of living or nonliving beings differ from each
other in so many aspects. Humans, though we are a common species, differ in sizes, shapes,
appearances, personality, and behavior. We have similarities but as individuals, we have variations
and differences, too.

Individual differences is defined as the differences among individuals that distinguish or separate
them from one another and make one as a unique individual in oneself.
This can be caused by two major factors:
• Heredity (Nature)
We inherit almost all the things we need for growth and development. It includes physical
condition, mental ability, aptitude and special talent, gender, age, emotional maturity and
stability, introversion, extroversion, dominance, submissiveness, criminal tendency, and all
other capacities.

• Environment (Nurture)
It provides the direction of the growth and development of an individual. This consists of
family background, peer and community influences, and school (location, facilities, and
teachers).

Types of Individual Differences

The following are the different types of differences observed in human beings:

1. Physical Differences. These are based on physical characteristics such as weight,

height, colors of skin, eye, hair, facial expression, mannerism of speech and walk.

2. Mental Differences. It is based on intellectual abilities like reasoning and thinking

powers, power of imagination, expressions, creative skills, etc.

3. Emotional Differences. In some individuals, positive emotions like love, affection, and
sympathy are more prevalent. Whereas, in other, negative emotions like hatred and
sadness are more powerful.

4. Social and Moral Differences. Some can easily adjust and develop good social
relations. It is easy for them to build good relationships. But some isolate themselves and
become antisocial.

5. Learning Differences. Some individuals learn more easily and they are able to make use

of their learnings more comfortably than others.

Reading is a skill that is necessary for almost every task in school. When a person can’t read well,
it’s very difficult to succeed in school no matter how bright or motivated he/she is. A reading
disability is the most common type of learning disability.

The best way for us to understand each individual difference is by putting ourselves in their shoes.
Try the following tasks to see how it would feel to have a reading disability.

What to do:
• Get a book and stand in front of a mirror.
• Hold the book upside-down and look at the mirror.
• Read three to five sentences from the book while facing the mirror.

Guide Questions:

1. Did you have trouble reading the sentences? Why?

2. Do you know anyone with a problem like this?
3. After doing the tasks, how did you feel for all the persons with disability? Do you think they
can still make important contributions to society? How?
4. Is it important to consider individual circumstances and opportunities before judging a
person’s capabilities? Why or why not?
