LESSON PLAN IN GENERAL MATHEMATICS

GRADE: 11 QUARTER: 1 WEEK: 1 DAY: 1

COMPETENCY & Represents real-life situations using functions, including piecewise
:
OBJECTIVES functions. (M11GM-Ia-1)
CONTENT : Functions
LEARNING SLM Module 1 pages 1-5
RESOURCES : GM LM pages 1-9
GM TG pages 1-11
PROCEDURE : A. Preparation

Divide the class into 4 groups. Give each group one of these figures which
they have to consider as machines.

B. Motivation

The rules inside the figure indicate how the machine functions.
For your machine, identify 5 inputs and then determine the corresponding
outputs.
List the 5 pairs of (input, output) from each machine.
Present your group output.
C. Presentation

Which of these machines, if you know the input, can you determine a single
or unique output?
Explain why (e) is not.
Recall functions from Grade 8. Differentiate functions from mere relations.
Recall how functions can be represented or described.
Present the learning objectives.
D. Discussion/Abstraction
Discuss Example 1 from the SLM.
Squares of side 𝑥 are cut from each corner of an 8 𝑖𝑛𝑐ℎ𝑒𝑠 by 5 𝑖𝑛𝑐ℎ𝑒𝑠
rectangular cardboard so that its sides can be folded to make a box with no
top. Define as a function of 𝑥 the volume 𝑉 of the box.

Guide the students in forming the equation that models the functional
relationship of the volume of the box with the side of the square to be cut.
Emphasize that with the model you can easily determine the volume
of the box for any value of x you want to assign.
Discuss Example 2 from the SLM for piecewise functions.

E. Exercises

1. Give a function C that can represent the cost of buying x meals, if

one meal costs P40.00.
2. A certain notebook costs P38.00 per piece. However, if you buy
more than 12 pieces, they will be marked down to a price of
P35.00 per piece. Represent the cost 𝐶 of buying the notebooks
as a function of the number 𝑛 of notebooks bought.
F. Generalization

1. What is a function?
2. How do we represent or describe functions?
3. How do we write the relationship of y =x to show that the
relationship of y to x is a functional relation?

G. Application

Your friend earns P600 per day to do a certain job. Express his
total salary 𝑆 as a function of the number of days 𝑛 that he works.
H. Evaluation
The perimeter of a rectangle is 32 cm. Express as a function the
area 𝐴 of the rectangle in terms of the width 𝑤.
I. Agreement/Assignment
A Zumba instructor charges according to the number of participants. If
there are 15 participants or below, the instructor charges P500.00 for each
participant per month. If the number of participants is between 15 and 30,
he charges P400.00 for each participant per month. If there are 30 or more,
he charges P350 for each participant per month. Write a piecewise function
that describes what the instructor charges. (Let C be the amount that the
instructor charges and p the number of participants.)
