GRADE: 11 QUARTER: 1 WEEK: 3 DAY: 1

COMPETENCY Represents rational functions through its: (a) table of values, (b) graph
& : and (c) equation. (M11GM-Ib-4)
OBJECTIVES
CONTENT : Representations of Rational Functions
LEARNING SLM Module 3
RESOURCES : GM LM pages 35-43
GM TG pages 44-53
PROCEDURE A. Preparation
: Recall the definition of a rational function.
B. Motivation
Consider a 100-m track used by foot runners.
a. How is the speed of a runner on this track computed?
b. If a runner wants to finish the track in 10 seconds, what should be his/her
speed?
c. If a runner finishes the track in more than 10 seconds, how do you compare
his/her speed with that of the 10 seconds running time?
C. Presentation
Present the learning objective.
D. Discussion/Abstraction
Definition: A rational function is a quotient of two polynomials that can be
𝑝(𝑥)
written in the form 𝑓(𝑥) = where 𝑝(𝑥) and 𝑞(𝑥) are polynomial functions and
𝑞(𝑥)
𝑞(𝑥) ≠ 0. It is assumed that 𝑝(𝑥) and 𝑞(𝑥) have no factor in common.

𝑑
Average speed or velocity can be computed by the formula 𝑠 = 𝑡 . The speed
of a runner can be computed by taking the time for him to run the track and
100
applying it to the formula 𝑠 = 𝑡 , since the distance is fixed at 100 meters.

EXAMPLE 1: Represent the speed of a runner as a function of the time it takes to

run 100 meters in the track.

SOLUTION: Since the speed of the runner depends on the time it takes to run 100
meters, we can represent speed as a function of time.

Let 𝑥 represents the time it takes to run 100 meters. Then the speed 𝑠(𝑥) is a
100
function of 𝑥 represented as a rational function 𝑠(𝑥) = 𝑥 .

EXAMPLE 2: Construct a table of values to represent the speed 𝑠(𝑥) of the runner
in meters per second for run times from 10 seconds to 20 seconds.
SOLUTION:
𝑥 10 12 14 16 18 20

𝑠(𝑥) 10 8.33 7.14 6.25 5.56 5

From the table you can see that speed decreases with time.

EXAMPLE 3: Plot the points from the table of values on a Cartesian plane and
sketch the graph of 𝑠(𝑥).

SOLUTION. By connecting the

plotted points from the table of
values, we can see that the points
are not collinear but rather follow a
smooth curve.

E. Exercises
𝑥−1
Represent the rational function 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥+1 using a table of values,
then plot a graph of the function.
F. Generalization
1. How will you choose the values of x when constructing the table of values of a
rational function?
2. Is the graph of a rational function continuous or are there no breaks on the
graph?
3. Where do the breaks occur?
G. Application
𝑥 2 −3𝑥−10
Represent the rational function 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥
using a table of values. Plot
the points given in the table of values and sketch a graph by connecting the points.
H. Evaluation
A. Consider a 100-meter track used for foot races. The time it takes for a runner to
run the track can be computed by taking the speed in running the track and
100
applying it to the formula 𝑡 = 𝑠 , since the distance is fixed at 100 meters.

1. Let x represents the speed to run the 100 meters. Represent the time to
run the track as a function of the speed.

2. Represent t(x) as a table of values for speed from 5 meters per second to
10 meters per second.

3. Represent as a graph the functional relation of the time to the speed as

described in the table of values in #2.
I. Agreement/Assignment
Define the following:
a. Domain of a function
b. Range of a function
