decreasing, concave up, and concave down. Identify and relative extreme values AND any
points of inflection.

2. Identify the maximum and minimum value of 𝑦 = 𝑥 ,⁄' (20 − 𝑥) on the closed
interval[−1, 20].

3. Use Newton’s method to find the positive root of the function 𝑦 = 2 sin 𝑥 − 𝑥. Compare
the number of steps necessary to reach 8 decimal places of accuracy when 𝑥7 = 1, 𝑥7 =

4. Assume the operating cost of a certain truck (excluding the driver’s wages) is 12 + = cents
per mile when the truck travels at 𝑥 miles per hour. If the driver earns $6 per hour, what
is the most economical speed to operate the truck on a 400-mile turnpike where the
minimum speed is 40 mi/her and the maximum speed is a 70 mi/hr? (The cost equation
(𝐶) in terms of 𝒙 (speed) is given below)

𝑥 1 400 2 2400
𝐶(𝑥) = &12 + + , . (400) + , . (6) = 48 + 𝑥 +
6 100 𝑥 3 𝑥

5. An aircraft is flying at a constant altitude with a constant speed of 600 mi/hr. An
antiaircraft missile is fired on a straight line perpendicular to the flight path of the aircraft
so it will hit the aircraft at a point 𝑃. At the instant the aircraft is 2 miles from the impact
point 𝑃, the missile is 4 miles from 𝑃 and flying at a rate of 1200 mi/hr. At that instant,
how rapidly is the distance between the missile and the aircraft decreasing?

6. Sketch the graph of a continuous function which satisfies all the following conditions:

b. 𝑓’(4) does not exist.
c. 𝑓"(𝑥) < 0 for all 𝑥 < 4
d. 𝑓"(𝑥) > 0 for all 𝑥 > 4.

7. A function f is continuous on the interval [−3, 3] and its first and second derivaties have
the values given in the following table:
𝒙 (−3, 1) −1 (−1, 0) 0 (0, 1) 1 (1, 3)
𝒇′(𝒙) Positive 0 Negative Negative Negative 0 Negative
𝒇"(𝒙) Negative Negative Negative 0 Positive 0 Negative

25 inches. To build the box, squares of length 𝑥 will be cut from the corners of the
cardboard and the then the edges will be folded up. What is the volume of the largest box
