pages are printed as indicated and that no questions are missing.
1. Fig. 1 shows a fencing post whose length is being measured using a strip of a measuring tape.

3. A student wanted to estimate the height of a tree. He held a rod upright and measured the
length of the shadow. He also measured the length of the shadow formed by the tree using a
surveyors’ tape measure as shown in the diagram. Determine the height (H) of the tree from
his measurements. (3 mark)

4. (a) Fig 1.10 shows a conical flask 15 cm high, filled with a liquid of density 1200kgm -3. The
atmospheric pressure of the surrounding is 8.4 x 104 Pa
Fig 1.10
Determine the pressure at the point marked X, at the bottom of the flask. (3 mark)
(b) The figure below shows columns of different liquids in a tube. Determine the height of liquid A if
its density is 1.20 g/cm3 . (3 marks)
5. Sketch a graph of volume against temperature of water between 0°C to 10°C (2 marks)

(iii) If the experiment was performed at a higher temperature, would you expect it to take
longer or shorter time to form the white deposits? Explain. (2 marks)

QUESTION 15
(ii) Determine the minimum pressure it can exert when lying on one of its surfaces.
(2 marks)
(c) The figure below shows a U-tube filled with water, mercury and another liquid:
(d) The figure below shows how to empty water from a large tank into a lowlying container
using rubber tubing:
(i) Explain why the tube must be filled with water before the emptying process starts.
(1 mark)
(ii) Soon after the tank begins to empty, the lower end is momentarily blocked by placing
a finger at end D. Determine the pressure difference between points A and D. (Take
density of water to be (1000 kgm–3) (2 marks)

direction when placed on the surface of water. (2 marks)
