Treetop Walking Path

The Treetop Walking Path is in Anykščiai Regional Park, in the small town of Anykščiai, Lithuania.

The Treetop Walking Path gives visitors the opportunity to walk through the forest at treetop level,
experiencing the Anykščiai forest from a different viewpoint. The path ends at a 34-metre high
observation tower, allowing visitors to experience views of the forest below.

At the base of the observation tower is a visitor information centre where visitors can find out
about the surrounding forest, natural environment and local culture and purchase souvenirs. The
surrounding forest provides more experiences for visitors including walking, cycling and water-based
activities.

The Treetop Walking Path operates an educational programme which is available to all visitors for
a small fee. The programme includes a guided tour, a presentation about the Treetop Walking Path
and forest, local cultural poems and lessons on the connection between humans and nature.

Money generated from sales at the Park is used for protecting the forest and to spread awareness
of the local culture.

Fig. 1.1 for Question 1

City Tourism

City destinations attract leisure and business tourists from all over the world. They are also
popular with tourists passing through who are using the transport gateways in the city to get to
other destinations.

On average tourism represents 5.7% of jobs within cities.

In many established city destinations spending per international visitor is higher than spending
per domestic visitor. For example, in Toronto, Canada, international visitors spend nine times
more than domestic visitors.

However, other cities have a more balanced share of domestic and international tourists. In
New York City, USA, 55% of visitor spending comes from domestic visitors and 45% from
international visitors.

Chongqing, China, is one city that has more visitor spend from domestic visitors than
international visitors: 95% of their visitor spend comes from domestic visitors.

Money earned from international visitors often helps to pay for local infrastructure projects and
public services. For example, in New York City international visitor spend is three times higher
than the costs of the police department for the city.

Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwestern Uganda is a protected sanctuary for many
different and rare types of flora and fauna. It is home to half of the world’s population of endangered
mountain gorillas. The park is owned and managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

Gorilla trekking is the park’s main tourist attraction, generating revenue for the Uganda Wildlife
Authority.

The number of tourists allowed to visit the park is strictly controlled to protect the forest and the
wildlife. Tourists who want to take part in a gorilla trek must first buy a permit. Permits cost $700
and only 150 permits are available each day. Tourists must also pay a $40 fee to enter the park.
Groups visiting the park must not exceed eight people and all tourists must be accompanied by a
Uganda Wildlife Authority guide.

To make their trek more comfortable tourists can hire a local porter to carry their backpack for $15
a day.

Fig. 1.1 for Question 1

Mountain Tourism
For a long time, leisure tourists have enjoyed mountain destinations.

It is often the mountain destinations’ unique physical and natural attractions that draw tourists
to the area.

Many mountain destinations have different unique features in different seasons. These different
features allow the destinations to appeal to a variety of tourists and develop all-year-round
tourism. For example, in the Alpine mountain regions of Europe, snowy winters contrast with
the lush green summers.

The development of tourism in mountain destinations is often restricted by climatic conditions,

natural disasters and accessibility. However, tourism can provide important positive economic,
environmental, social and cultural impacts to these remote areas.

To ensure the future of these destinations, tourism must be sustainable.

Domestic tourism in India

The Ministry of Tourism and the National Tourism Organisation (NTO) in India have
introduced an incentive scheme to encourage more domestic tourism.

The scheme will allow Indian citizens to make a promise to travel to at least 15 tourist
destinations across India in a year. If citizens complete their promise the government of
India will refund their travel expenses.

To qualify for the refund tourists must:

• visit all 15 destinations within one year
• submit photographs of their visits to a government website •
travel outside their home state.

Tourism in St Lucia

St Lucia, a Caribbean island, attracts over 1.2 million visitors per year. Only 30% of visitors
to the island are staying visitors. The rest of the visitors arrive on cruise ships or yachts
and do not use the local accommodation services.

St Lucia has introduced a tourist accommodation fee. All visitors to St Lucia will be charged
a fee of between $3 and $6 a night except for accommodation sold on home sharing
websites which will be charged a fee of $7 a night.

The money collected will be used to fund tourism destination marketing, support village
tourism and the development of local tourism products.

St Lucia Tourism Authority (SLTA) aims to attract more staying tourists to the country. They
have said marketing and promoting tourism destinations has become increasingly difficult
and highly competitive. Therefore, it is essential to raise extra money so they can remain
competitive.

Accessibility in the Old City of Jerusalem

The Old City of Jerusalem is visited by 10 million visitors each year. The area is hilly and surrounded by
ancient city walls.

S.MUTONHERE
53

The government of the country has passed a law requiring visitor attractions and other tourism
organisations to be accessible to all visitors and locals. This includes access for people who are wheelchair
users, hearing impaired and visually impaired.

The Old City of Jerusalem is a protected World Heritage Site. All infrastructure developments and
improvements must be completed in a way that does not damage the historical and cultural features of the
ancient city.

Recent accessibility developments in the Old City of Jerusalem include:

• handrails
• ramps
• smooth raised walkways
• audio apps
• accessibility maps showing the best routes for wheelchair users
• accessibility apps translated into eight languages.

These developments have all been created to make the area more accessible and allow more tourists to
experience the historical and cultural features of the city.

Fig. 1.1 for Question 1

Tourism in Jordan
Jordan is a country in western Asia.

The main attraction in the country is the ancient city of Petra. Other popular attractions include the
protected desert landscape of Wadi Rum, the River Jordan and the Dead Sea.

Jordan has been experiencing an increase in visitor numbers after four years of reduced visitor
numbers.

Tour operators in Europe are reporting an increase in bookings and demand for holidays to Jordan.
Increasingly, escorted tours are being chosen over independent travel in Jordan due to the desert
conditions and historical attractions that make up the must-see sights. Escorted tours include a
planned itinerary and a tour guide.

Popular escorted tours in Jordan include adventure tours and tours designed for families, young
people, single travellers as well as specialist tourists.

Fig. 2.1 for Question 2

Cruising the Caribbean

The Caribbean is famous for its white sand beaches, tropical climate, wildlife and vibrant
towns. It is the world’s most popular cruise circuit. Tourism is a very important industry in
most Caribbean economies.

The USA is the largest source market for cruise holidays in the Caribbean. The Caribbean
is also a popular cruise circuit with tourists from Canada, the UK and other European
countries.

The most popular time to visit the Caribbean is the high season from December through
to April when the weather is warm and relatively dry. The low season has much higher
temperatures with a greater probability of rain and a risk of hurricanes which can result
in lower prices.

Below are examples of two Caribbean cruises.

Fig. 4.1 for Question 4

Environmental impacts in the Mediterranean Sea

The Mediterranean Sea separates the continents of Europe, Africa and Asia. It accounts
for only 0.7% of the world’s total sea area.

The Mediterranean coastline attracts over 200 million visitors (20% of the world’s
international tourist arrivals) each year who visit to enjoy the beaches, cultural coastal
towns and cities and the warm and dry Mediterranean climate.

Research has shown that tourists to the Mediterranean cause a 40% increase in plastic
pollution in the Mediterranean Sea each summer. Single use plastics such as drinking
straws, food containers and water bottles are some of the items that pollute the sea. The
increase in plastic pollution is having a negative environmental impact on the wildlife,
water quality and visual beauty of the area.

The city of Nice in France, a country with a Mediterranean coastline, spends over €2 m
every year cleaning its beaches of plastic pollution.

In coastal destinations tourists, tourism organisations and local communities are being
encouraged to reduce the amount of waste going into the seas and oceans by:
67

• reducing the use of plastic

• recycling where possible
• disposing of waste responsibly

Tourism in Chicago

Chicago is a large, vibrant city in the north of the USA. Chicago has become known as the transportation centre
of the USA due to its central location and size.

The city has a major rail terminal and its airport, O’Hare Airport, is the sixth busiest airport in the world.

Chicago is located a long way from the coast. However, the city has a large passenger port and a series of
inland waterways linking it to the north and south of the country.

Tourist numbers to Chicago have increased to over 57 million, the highest the city has ever had.

More domestic tourists visit the city than overseas tourists. Both domestic and overseas tourism are steadily
increasing year on year. The largest increases in overseas visitors to Chicago are from Brazil, Italy, the UK and
South Korea.

Chicago is known for its sports, music, restaurants, theatres, nature reserves, parks, museums and the 26 miles
of open lakefront of Lake Michigan. As well as the many natural and built visitor attractions, Chicago hosts 36
parades, 40 film festivals and 74 music festivals every year.

Uluru, Australia

Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park is located in central Australia. It is a World Heritage site protected for both its
natural and cultural values.

Within the National Park is Uluru, a large, ancient, red sandstone rock formation which is one of Australia’s
most famous attractions.

The National Park is a sacred site to the Anangu tribe, the indigenous people who have inhabited the land for
over 22 000 years. Uluru itself is a holy place for the Anangu tribe and rituals are still held there today. The
ancient art work on the rocks shows the way of life and traditions of the people who lived and worshipped at
this site.

The attraction is most popular at sunrise and sunset when the golden sun makes the rock colour more vibrant.
When visiting Uluru tourists are asked to respect the Anangu tribe and not climb the rock. However, an
estimated 60 000 people every year ignore this and climb the sacred site causing damage, offending the
Anangu tribe and putting themselves at risk. As a result the National Park authorities have banned all climbing
of the rock.

Angkor Archaeological Park, Cambodia

Angkor Archaeological Park in Cambodia is one of the largest religious monuments in the
world.

The most famous attractions in the Archaeological Park are the Temple of Angkor Wat and
the Bayon Temple.

The ticket price for the Archaeological Park has increased and now generates over $60
million from visitors. Cambodian residents under the age of 12 can enter the Park for free.

$2 from each ticket sold is donated to local children’s charities.

All tour operators that include the Archaeological Park within their package holiday are
required, by law, to use Cambodian trained and registered guides. However, there has been
an increase in illegal unregistered guides operating at the Archaeological Park.

Over 2 million tourists visit Angkor Wat Temple a year and tourist numbers to the sacred site
are expected to increase.

Shopping as a reason for travel

For many tourists shopping has become an important reason for travel.

Tourists used to go on vacation to sightsee. By plane, train or car, tourists set out to explore what the
destination had to offer.

North America is home to some impressive natural sights, world-class museums and galleries, dining,
festivals, events and more. Though these attractions still appeal to tourists, a new trend has emerged:
shopping.

Shopping tourism in New York City (NYC)

New York City receives 10 million international tourists each year; the most of any city in the USA.
NYC & Company, the city’s official tourism marketing organisation, estimates that almost 25 cents out
of every dollar spent by visitors in New York City is spent on shopping. Travellers spend approximately
$8 billion (USD) in the city’s stores and shops, generating $750 million (USD) annually in sales taxes
for the city.

Tourists and Ramadan

Gulf states such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have strict laws governing
behaviour in public during the religious period of Ramadan.

A recent survey of international tourists in the UAE revealed that:

• 72 % said they had very little knowledge of local customs

• 25 % said they had never tried to learn about the local culture

Ramadan in Dubai
In Dubai it is against the law to eat or drink during sunlight hours when worshippers
are fasting for the period of Ramadan.

Cannons are fired to mark the beginning and the end of the day’s fast. The sound
of the cannons also lets tourists know that the daily fast has ended and people can
resume eating and drinking in public for the evening.

Holiday Planning
Many people planning a holiday rate the risk of terrorism in destinations as their biggest
concern.

A recent study of tourists who were planning an overseas holiday showed that 35% of adults
are concerned about terror attacks when on holiday.

The study also showed that in the event of a terror incident in or near a holiday destination:

• 53% would change their destination or cancel their holiday

• 14% would postpone their holiday
• 33% would not change their plans

Older tourists and those with young children displayed a higher rate of concern about
terrorism than younger travellers aged 16–24.

Further research about holiday planning has shown that:

• 90% research their holiday online before travelling

• 80% now book their holiday via the internet
• 80% use comparison sites to check exchange rates
• 40% buy foreign currency online
