Impacts of Acid Rain on the Environment Practical Investigation

Purpose;
This assessment provides you with the opportunity to investigate concepts relating to environmental
impacts of acid, and to demonstrate your ability to:
 deconstruct a problem in order to design and conduct an investigation
 collect, record and display data
 analyse and interpret data to form a justified conclusion
 evaluate procedures and their effect on the data
 communicate your understanding of concepts relating to chemical techniques

Description of the Problem;

What are the impacts of acid rain on the environment?

Part A: Deconstruct the problem and design an investigation procedure:

You will need to provide evidence, on a summary sheet, of your thinking about the problem, your
choice of question and reasons why you are selecting the various parts of your procedure.
Work individually to deconstruct the problem:
 investigate how acids enter the environment, both naturally and anthropogenic causes.
 explore the impacts of acids in the environment, human health, animals or plants etc.
 research different analytical techniques used in chemistry to determine acid concentrations
 brainstorm possible factors that could affect how acids react in the environment.
 select one factor to investigate. Provide reasons for your choice of independent variable.
 you may carry out a preliminary test in the laboratory to help make this decision. Note your
reasoning on your summary sheet.
 provide justification for areas explored and any decisions made.
Then, individually design an experimental procedure to test your chosen variable:
 write an investigable question at addresses the initial problem based on your previous
research
 select an independent variable for the investigation that you want to explore
 describe how the dependent variable will be measured
 state a reasonable hypothesis for the investigation
 identify factors that can be controlled and those that cannot be controlled, justify the
selected the independent and dependent variable
 design and write a procedure to test your question. Include a list of materials required and a
detailed list of steps in dot points. Justify your choice of equipment and the various steps in
the procedure.
 outline any safety and ethical considerations that need to be addressed
 provide justification for choices made throughout the design process, particularly in
methodology
Assessment Type 1: Investigation Folio

Your summary sheet outlining the deconstruction process will be submitted prior to completing the
report. Record your thoughts, observations and procedure on the summary sheet. Suggested formats
for the summary sheet include flow charts, concept maps, tables or notes.

Part A can be. Maximum of 4 single A4 pages. This component is summative and will contribute to the
final grade of the practical report.

Part B: Carry out experimental procedure

Students work in pairs. In consultation with the teacher, one of the two students’ methods will be
selected, and modified if appropriate, for the investigation. Students will then submit a materials and
equipment request form. They may collect their own samples of fabric for pre-testing before the double
lesson in which the experiment will be conducted.

Each student should record their own data.

Part C: Final Investigation Report

The report should be a maximum of 1000 words if written, or a maximum of 8 minutes for an oral
presentation, or the equivalent in multimodal form.

An individual practical report is completed. Students may submit one draft for feedback.
In the report the specific standards IAE1, IAE2, IAE3, IAE4 and KA 1, KA4 are assessed.

The final practical report should include the following sections:

 introduction with relevant chemistry concepts, and either a hypothesis and variables, or an
investigable question
 materials/apparatus
 method/procedure that outlines the trials and steps to be taken
 identification and management of safety and/or ethical risks
 results
 analysis of results, identifying trends, and linking results to concepts
 evaluation of procedures and data, and identifying sources of uncertainty
 conclusion, with justification.
*The sections of materials/apparatus, method/procedures, risks, results, and deconstruction are
excluded from the word count.
