When Nature and Man Collide

hinaharap.

The most common calamity to happen in the Philippines is typhoon; around 20-30

typhoons hit the Philippines each year. It is a natural disaster that occurs in our country every

year, usually from September to December, but because of climate change, we now are not

certain or sure, since it now also happens during the summer months. Since typhoons are

common here, we must be prepared and ready whenever it happens. First thing to prepare is first

aid or medical kits, essential necessities such as hygienic needs, canned food, and water.

Secondly, it is important to know where to evacuate, especially if you are near dangerous places

like mountains, near rivers or seas. During the typhoon, you must stay calm, be updated about

the news, and stay indoors until it is safe to go out and if the typhoon has passed by. After it has

passed, check for any damages but stay away from electrical currents.

Lastly, landslides, which are a very significant danger to both humans and the

environment. They’re large movements of soil, rocks, and debris that happen on a slope. They

can happen because of a variety of reasons such as natural phenomena like rain, earthquakes, or

human activity. Safety is always a priority so to prepare for such calamity; it is important to

monitor the land and be aware of the signs of instability, such as cracks and exposed roots. If

there's a landslide approaching, people must evacuate the area immediately, and seek emergency

assistance as well as staying alert. If a landslide does happen, be sure to assess the aftermath then

make the needed repairs and stabilize the land. They can happen with very little or no warning at

all and have the potential to cause serious damage to people, natural ecosystems, and

Infrastructures. If possible, staying away from high-risk areas and keeping the drainage systems

clear can really contribute to preventing such calamities from affecting you.

It is our natural instinct to be prepared for these calamities because it is basic human

survival and self-preservation initiatives. If we don’t prepare for such, there are possibilities that

casualties and accidents may happen more often. Thus, it can result in loss of life, property

damage, economic losses, and a range of social, environmental, and infrastructure challenges.

Relying on the rescue team won’t do any good; this could discourage people from evacuating or

being careful when they believe they are entirely protected--- which they are not. That’s why we

should save ourselves. Other times, privileged or rich people believe that they don't have to

prepare because they can easily battle the storm. But what about the vulnerable populations at

risk, they face challenges in accessing resources and assistance during disasters. It is better to be

ready than to be caught off-guard when disaster strikes, natural disasters are natural after all.
