Unit Test 7

Specific Competences Test: Speaking

Specific Competence 2: Presentation
1 Imagine a radio programme is asking people to send them voice messages about this topic: A skilful
person who I know.
a Think and plan
• First, think of a person you know who has a special skill (e.g. a sport, an art or craft, cooking, playing a musical
instrument, singing, etc.).
• Give some general information about them (e.g. name, nationality, age, where they live, etc.).
• Describe their skill.
• Give an example of when you saw them using their skill.
• Do you know how / when they learned their skill?
• Do you have a similar skill? If not, would you like to learn? Why / Why not?

b Practise your presentation with a partner. Remember to make eye contact and speak slowly and
clearly. Be honest but respectful when giving feedback to your partner. Help each other with your
English but remember that it doesn’t need to be perfect.

c Now do your presentation or create your voice message. (Your teacher will tell you which one of
these to do.) Talk about a skilful person who you know.

Specific Competence 3: Spoken Interaction
2 Work in pairs. Imagine your partner doesn’t know how to do one of the things below. Choose one
thing or use your own idea. Explain how to do it using key phrases for giving spoken instructions. Then
change roles.
• How to make the perfect cup of tea or coffee
• How to make the perfect sandwich
• How to search for something on the internet
• How to make a video on your phone
• How to draw a person or an animal

First, think about the equipment and the order of your instructions. Think about any important
instructions. Then, give the instructions to your partner.

Remember: Try to use falling intonation when giving instructions to make them very clear. If you don’t
know what something is called in English, try to explain it in your own words.
