Make a street library!

What is a street library?
It’s a small box of books outside a house, outside a shop, or in a park or community garden.
People can walk past and take a book, and it’s free! They can read it. Then they can keep the
book, put it back or give it to someone. People can also put books into the library.

Why do we like street libraries?

We love sharing books. If you put a book in a street library, it will help the environment because
lots of people will read the book, not just one person. If you make a street library, it will benefit
your community because more people will have books.

How do I make a street library?

It’s very easy. If you email us at GreenhillsStreetLibraries@mymail.com, we’ll give you some tips
on how to make one. You can use things you have at home. For example, a picture frame works
really well for a door for your little library! If you live in Greenhills, we’ll make one for you. When
you build your street library, remember that you need to keep the rain out!

How will people know about my street library?

Put it where people can see it, and put a notice on it. For example, ‘Give a book. Take a book.
Enjoy!’ If you don’t have many books, ask people in your street. Then create a social media post in
a local community group and wait for the people to come!

The writers, Kanica Naidoo, Ravi Devi and Michelle Lalvani, are teenagers from Greenhills School.
They think street libraries are brilliant and they want to tell everyone about them!
