“tarie TRANSMISSION INTRODUCTION THM 4180-E, We wish to thank General Motors Corp. for the information and illustrations that have made this booklet possible. This booklet contains general description and overhaul procedures necessary to repair, overhaul, or service the new THM 4T80-E electronic overdrive automatic transaxle. The THM 4780-E is a fully automatic Front Wheel Drive electronically controlled transaxle. It provides 4 forward ranges including overdrive and all shifts are freewheeling. Shift points are controlled by the PCM via two shift solenoids. Oil pressure is supplied by 3 gear type oil pumps. Oil pressure is regulated by the PCM via a force motor. Shift schedule and TCC apply rates are also controlled by the PCM and are influenced by many sensor inputs. ADAPT FUNCTION TRANSAXL the 47T80-E uses a line pressure control system which has the ability to continuously adapt the system’s line pressure (increase As Needed) to compensate for normal wear of clutch plates and bands. This "Learning" feature is similar to the A604. ‘The PCM maintains several adapt parameters for the transaxle. © UPSHIFT ADAPT - The PCM monitors the TIS Sensor and VSS during command shifts to determine if a shift is occurring too fast (Harsh) or too slow (Soft) and adjusts the transaxle Force Motor signal to maintain a set shift feel 0 STEADY STATE ADAPT - The PCM monitors the TIS Sensor and VSS after a shift and calculates the amount of slipping in that gear. The PCM then adjusts the Force Motor signal to maintain slippage below a set amount 0 GARAGE SHIFT ADAPT - The PCM monitors TIS Sensor during a shift into reverse or drive , and calculates if the engagement is occurring too fast (Harsh) or too slow (Soft), and the PCM adjusts the Force Motor signal to maintain a set (Desirable) garage shift feel. Utilize the bore located in the holding fixture whenever lifting the unit is necessary and lift with a chain hoist and/or appropriate lifting equipment. It may be necessary to place a counterweight fon the opposite side of your workbench for balance when you mount the 4T80-E transaxle in the bench fixture. Make sure the work area is adequate and CLEAN for the layout, inspection and cleaning of component parts. Do not over expand snap rings during disassembly or assembly process. 1, Install J-39050 support fixture onto the transaxle, as shown in Figure 39.
