PAATSG]. MATIC TRANSMISSION SERVICE GY INTRODUCTION ‘The 1987 and 1988 THM 700-R4 transmission was produced with many major engineer- ing design changes. These changes affected nearly every part used in the 700-R4. This “Update Handbook” will explain the purpose of each change, the parts affected by the change, and any parts interchangeability problems created by the change. z, 7 The engineering changes covered in this Update Handbook are: 1. Accumulator auxiliary valve body added. 2. Neutral to reverse garage shift fix. 3. Apply package, 3-4 clutch. 4, Low and reverse roller clutch. 5. Overrun clutch lubrication. 6. Heavy duty input sprag assembly. 7. Temperature switch added. 8. Selective backing plates. 9. Forward clutch backing plate revised. 10. Revised 1-2 valve train. 11. Speed sensor added for anti-skid braking. 12. Ten vane oil pump. 13. Accumulator piston and seal change. 14, "S" and ‘T” trucks 215 f.lbs. converter damper. Additional changes are still being planned for this transmission in the future. Any changes. made after the printing of this manual will be covered by an ATSG SERVICE BULLETIN. Information and part numbers contained in this handbook have been carefully compiled from industry sources known for their reliability, but ATSG does not guarantee its accuracy. ROBERT D. REASON: The temperature switch supplies an alternate ground path for the T.C.C. solenoid and applies the converter clutch when sump temperatures reach 126/135C (259/275F) and the transmission is in 4th gear. This reduces heat caused by the converter when it is not applied. When the sump temperature cools to 106/119C (222/246F) normal T.C.C. operation resumes. The temperature switch mounts on the valve body and is submerged in transmission fluid in the oil pan. See Figure 5. PARTS AFFECTED: 1, Temperature Switch added. 2. A new (Type 15) solenoid and wiring hamess assembly is used, and can be identified by a dark blue insulator and the number 4415 cast into top of insulator (See Figure 5) NOTE: See Figure 6 for "ALL THM 700-R4 wiring type ID. The Speed Sensor and Rotor replace the speedometer adapter and speedometer drive gear (See Figures 10 and 11). Current usage is on C trucks with 4.3L, 5.0L, 5.7L, (Gas) and 6.2L (Diesel) engines. This change went into production July 17, 1986. PARTS AFFECTED: 1. The speedometer adapter and speedometer drive gear are replaced by the Speed Sensor(99) and Rotor (699). See Figures 10 and 11 2. Output Shaft(687) — Has an added groove to remove and install the Rotor (See Figure 12). 3. Transmission Case(10) - Orificed cup plug installed in the governor bore which provides lubrication to the extension housing bushing when the speed sensor rotor is used. See Figuré 9. This lube was normally provided by the spinning speedometer driven gear teeth throwing oil to the bushing. When the speedo gear is replaced with a rotor the forced lube of orificed cup plug is needed. INTERCHANGEABILITY: 1, The new Speed Sensor “Cannot” be used in previous models. 2. The Low Overrun Valve(364) (Figure 14) in the auxiliary valve body provides a smooth 2-1 manual downshift. It also regulates the pressure applied to the low and reverse clutch to a lower pressure. 2. The Abuse Valve(360) (Figure 14) in the auxiliary valve body protects the forward clutch during rock cycles. Rock cycles are the same as rapidly shifting the transmission back and forth between reverse and drive when the vehicle is stuck in mud, sand, snow or ice. At any throttle position higher than idle, the Abuse Valve(360) opens to bypass the forward clutch feed orifice cup plug(359) in the auxiliary valve body. This results in a quicker forward clutch apply time. A quicker apply produces less heat and increases clutch durability. 3. A Forward Clutch Accumulator Piston(367) and Spring(370), incorporated in the new auxiliary valve body, provides smooth garage shifts o drive (See Figure 14). PARTS AFFECTED: 1. The Auxiliary Valve Body is added (See Figure 14). 2, Checkball Locations - Checkball #5 located in the “Bathtub” in the main valve body has been eliminated (Figure 15). Checkball #12 added to the auxiliary valve body (See Figures 14 and 15), 3. Transmission Case(10) - Total of Four changes; (1) The case has a rib added in the low and reverse passage (See Figure 16). (2) The forward clutch feed hole in the case pump bore is no longer drilled (See Figure 17). (8) The case has a cast pipe window added in the front center (Figure 16) to allow a forward clutch feed pipe to be inserted into the forward clutch feed hole in the oil pump cover. (4) Orificed cup plug was added to the governor bore to lubricate the extension housing bushing (Figure 9). 4. Forward Clutch Feed Pipe and Brackets added (See Figure 14). 5. Spacer Plate and Gaskets are revised — There is now a “Two" letter code on all 87 and 88 spacer plates (Figure 19) and can be identified as follows; 1987 — First letter will always be “ 1988 — First letter will always be “B" 6. Pump Cover — the forward clutch feed hole (244) in the outside diameter of the pump cover next to the oil filter bore becomes larger, drilled at a different angle, and is no longer plugged (See Figure 22). The Forward Clutch Feed Pipe ow goes in this hole. 11. Oil Pan - The oil pan is one millimeter (.040") deeper to allow clearance for the auxiliary valve body, and the magnet is now square. For |.D. of the deeper pan, see Figure 23. INTERCHANGEABILITY: 1. DO NOT install the number 5 checkball back in the main valve body on any 1987-up THM 700-R4, that uses the Auxiliary Valve Body (See Figure 15). 2. The 1987 Case can be used on 82-86 models, but you MUST do the following: (1) Remove the RIB in the low and reverse passage (See Figure 16). (2) Drill the forward clutch feed hole in the pump bore using a 21/64" size drill bit (See Figure 17). 3. The 82-86 Case has been modified in some applications, but is NOT RECOMMENDED. 4. Spacer Plates “Will Not” interchange with previous models, 1987 are unique to 87 models. (First ID letter “A’) 1988 are unique to 88 models. (First ID letter “B”) 5. Always check the turbine shaft in the input housing for an orifice in the forward clutch feed passage (See Figure 18). (a) Using a 1987 input housing without this orifice in 82-86 models a very harsh garage shift to drive. (b) Using a 82-86 input housing with this orifice in 1987 models will create a Soft, slow apply of the forward clutch, and greatly reduce clutch durability. create Continued on Page 22 AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SERVICE GROUP. 20 Technical Service Information (COPPER FLASH) AUK VALVE jODY eS as (ce) ey SBA #2 CHECKBALL (SRD CLUTCH ACCUM.) 858 #12 CHECKBALL (FORWARD CLUTCH) 55C #6 CHECKBALL (DRIVE 3) 81, #0 CHECKBALL (Tv. The Solid Turbine Shaft Seals will retro fit back on all previous models and are “Highly Recommended”. The solid seals require an installation and resizing tool, Part No. T-1574, Seal, Turbine Shaft (4 Required) : 8667035 7. The previous and new design Forward Clutch Backing Plates are not interchangeable, because of the revised pilot diameter (See Figure 20). (A) Using the NEW style backing plate in the OLD style input housing, will not provide a good pilot and may create noise. {B) The OLD style backing plate will not ft into the NEW style input housing. 8. Forward clutch friction and steel plates are a different thickness in 1987 models, and the pack is selective. (See Figure 21). When building an 82-86 unit, do not mix 87 style clutch plates with the 82-86 style without checking clutch travel. 9, The 1987 Pump Cover can be used in 82-86 models if the larger forward clutch feed hole is plugged (See Figure 22). ‘The 82-86 pump cover should not be used on an 87 model because the low ‘and reverse feed hole located between the ring grooves on the stator hub is smaller. This hole size change will be covered later, in the neutral to reverse garage shift changes. 10. The deeper oil pan can be used on any 82-88 THM 700-Ré transmission. The past model oil pan “Cannot” be used on any model with the auxiliary valve body due to insufficient clearance. See Figure 23 for |.D. ‘SPECIAL NOTES: The auxiliary valve body did not go on all models at the start of 1987 production. In fact, it was not on all models until October 6, 1986, (Julien Date 279). Because of the many part changes associated with the auxiliary valve body, you should remove the oil pan and check for the auxiliary valve body before doing any service work. The cause could be the forward clutch accumulator pin in the auxiliary valve body moying out thru the hole in the center of the 1st design accumulator cover, and creating alloss of forward clutch oil. The original press fit of the pin was not sufficient to retain the pin in the auxiliary valve body casting. If you have the 1st design cover, braze shut the hole in the center of the cover and dril a 3/16” hole off center. (See Figure 24) The 2nd design cover with the oblong hole in the center is OK to use as is. If the pin has moved out the back side of the auxiliary valve body, a simple “staking” process will prevent it from moving that direction again. The 2nd design auxiliary valve body casting has a step machined in that area to prevent the pin from moving. PARTS AFFECTED: iN 1, Oil Pump Rotor(214) - 3 added pump vanes. 2. Rotor Guide(213) - 3 added pump vanes. ‘FICHANGEABILITY: 1. The ten vane pump and cover assembly will retro fit back to all previous models, but yor MUST install cup plug (244) into pump cover (See Figure 25) The ten vane rotor (214) and rotor guide (213) can be used in an oil pump body which originally had seven vanes. However, the pivot pin in the ten vane pump body is in a slightly different location, and will make it necessary to check for clearance between the slide and the slide pocket where the slide seal and support go. REASON: Softens the apply feel when the selector lever is moved from park or neutral to reverse. This change did not go into production until February 9, 1987 (Julien Date 040). PARTS AFFECTE! ‘A. Reverse Input Housing Assembly — Revised as follows; (Fig. 26) (1) The teverse input housing has a revised dimension for the new piston and the splines on the inner housing are longer (See Figure 26). (2) Feed hole on the inside diameter of the hub is reduced to .095" diameter. Early design has a rectangular hole that is .151" X .197”. (2) The ball capsule is removed from the reverse input drum, and replaced by a .095" orifice hole in the new piston. (4) Reverse input piston changes to cast aluminum, (5) The lip seals are revised to fit the new piston. (6) The wave plate is replaced by a bellvlle (Cone Shaped) plate. The beliville plate must be installed with the inside diameter against the steel plate as shown in Figure 26. (7) The thickness of the lined and steel plates change and the backing plate becomes selective (See Figure 29). B. Oil Pump Cover - The reverse input feed hole in the pump cover between the ring grooves on the stator hub, is made larger. (See Figure 27). CC. Input Housing — The profile of the input housing is revised where it mates with the reverse input plates. This change provides more lubrication to the reverse input clutch plates, and requires a new, revised dimension, checkball capsule in the input housing (See Figure 26). D. Transmission Case — A double orifice checkball capsule is added to the case in the low-reverse feed passage (See Fig. 28). The reason for the double orifice ball capsule is to allow for both a controlled apply and a rapid release of the low-reverse clutch pack. E. Low and Reverse Clutch Pack - Revised as follows; (1) Low and reverse clutch pack becomes selective (See Fig. 31). To choose the proper selective plate, see page 34. (2) Awaved clutch plate is added (See Figure 31), (8) The thickness of the lined and steel plates are revised (4) The profile of the low and reverse piston changes, and the piston apply leg becomes shorter (See Figure 30) INTERCHANGEABILITY: (1) The Reverse Input Housing “Will Not" retrofit backwards without extensive modifications. NOT RECOMMENDED. (2) The Oil Pump Cover can be used on all previous models, as long as you install cup plug (244) in forward clutch feed hole (See Figure 22). (3) The new design low-reverse clutch pack with selective plate will retro fit to all previous model years as long as a complete assembly and new design piston are used. REASON: Improves the durability of the 3-4 clutch plates by distributing the apply clamping force across the entire face of the clutch plates. This change went into production February 9, 1987 (Julien Date 040). PARTS AFFECTED: (1) Input Housing - The input housing becomes longer to make room for the stepped apply plate (See Figure 34). (2) Apply Plate — A stepped apply plate replaces the flat apply plate (See Figure 34). (8) 3-4 Steel Plate — Requires 1 next to the stepped apply plate and has the same spline configuration as the apply plate. (See Figure 34) (4) 3-4 Clutch Plates — The lined and steel 3-4 clutch plate thickness is revised, and steel plates have different spline configuration. (6) Backing Plate - The backing plate becomes selective. (See Figure 35). (6) Snap Ring ~ The 3-4 clutch retaining ring becomes thinner. (See Figure 34). (7) Input Internal Gear — Has longer splines to accommodate the movement of the 3-4 clutch plates because of the longer input housing (See Figure 34), INTERCHANGEABILITY: (1) The input housing “CANNOT™ be used in the 82-86 models because of the absence of the forward clutch orifice in the turbine shaft. (2) The stepped apply plate “CANNOT” be used in 82-86 models. (3) The 3-4 lined and steel plates should not be mixed without checking piston travel (See Figure 35). . (4) The 87 style input internal gear can be used in 82-86 models, but the 82-86 style input internal gear can not be used in 87-88 models. REASON: This change reduces internal leakage, thus improving consistency for the 1-2 and 3-4 shifts, and allows engine braking at a higher speed during a manual 2-1 downshift PARTS AFFECTED: (1) 1-2 Shift Vaive Line-up - The 1-2 shift valve line-up changes from 4 valves and 2 sleeves, to 2 valves and 1 sleeve. The Lo Range Downshift Valve(321), Lo Range Control Sleeve(320), and the 1-2 Lo Range Upshift Valve(353) have been eliminated from the 1988 models (See Figure 41). (2) 3-4 Throttle Valve - The 3-4 throttle valve and sleeve have been revised (See Figure 41) (3) Spacer Plate - Spacer plate has been revised to be compatable with the new valve body, as have both valve body gaskets. There is now a “Two” letter code on all 87-88 spacer plates and can be identified as follows: 1987 — First letter will always be "A" (See Figure 19). 1988 — First letter will always be “B” (See Figure 42). (4) Number 9 Checkball - The number 9 checkball, located in the case, has been eliminated on all 1988 models (See Figure 43). The spacer plate has been modified, with a rectangular hole, on some models so that even if the technician installs the checkball in a 1988 model, it will be ineffective. (See Figure 42) NOTE: INSTALLING THE NO. 9 CHECKBALL IN A 1988 MODEL CASE WITHOUT A MODIFIED SPACER PLATE WILL BURN THE LOW REVERSE CLUTCH. INTERCHANGEABILITY: (1) The 1988 valve body assembly cannot be used on any previous model THM 700-R4. (2) The spacer plate and gaskets are unique to 1988 models and will not retro fit to previous models, (3) DO NOT install the number 9 checkball in any 1988 model. ‘SERVICE INFORMATION: For Spacer Plate Part Numbers and Application; 1987 Models ~ See Figure 44 1988 Models - See Figure 45 AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SERVICE GROUP 6 Technical Service Information 82-87 VALVE BODY 1988 VALVE BODY 4 VALVE, 2 SLEEVE, SHIFT VALVE LINE-UP. REASON: Eliminates the possibility of a burr on the edge of the slot, cutting the low and reverse piston inner seal during assembly. PARTS AFFECTED (1) Transmission Case — The slot located in the case hub at the low and reverse piston no longer extends through the hub. When servicing the low and reverse piston on 1987 and prior model transmissions it was possible to remove the snap ring with a screwdriver through the slot. With the new case change the slot does not extend through the case hub so the snap ring must,be removed with snap ring pliers (See Figure 46). INTERCHANGEABILITY: The new design filter and filter seal can be used on any 1982-1988 THM 700-R4 transmission. The filter retaining clip is not needed with the new design filter, and should be discarded SERVICE INFORMATION: Seal, Oil Filter : gogeouod 8657767 Service Package, Filter, Filter Seal, Gasket ............ 8657926 70 Seal, Oil Filter 71 Filter Assembly, Ol | OO SPECIAL NOTE: Late filter will retro fit in MOST CASES. POSSIBLE LEAK POINTS THM 700-4 AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SERVICE GROUP ATSG] Technical Service Information CHANGE: Oil Pump Cover and Pump Gasket (See Figure 49). REASON: To prevent oil from exhausting out the breather cavity during HARSH deceler- ation or during SHARP turns. PARTS AFFECTED: (1) Pump Cover - Rib added to the pump cover to support the wider portion of new pump gasket (See Figure 49). (2) Pump Gasket - Revised pump gasket to cover breather cavity in pump cover (See Figure 49) INTERCHANGEABILITY: (1) The new pump to case gasket should not be used with the past oil pump cover, because the "Flap" on the new gasket could block the breather opening completely and the result would be a “Difficult To Fill” transmission. (2) The past pump to case gasket can be used with the new pump cover, but oil will continue to exhaust out the breather only on extremely harsh deceleration or extremely sharp turns. NOTE: If you are using the vehicle for racing purposes, you should use the new design pump cover and pump gasket. PARTS AFFECTED: (1) Reaction Carrier — Starting in 1985 the reaction carrier was built with a stationary (Bat Wing) pinion washer in place of the previous bronze thrust washer (See Figure 52) The reaction carrier was also modified to allow extra lube oil into the pinion roller bearings by using an oil deflector pressed onto the carrier (See Figure 52). Oil trapped by the oil deflector is forced through a new lube passage in each of the pinion pins, thereby providing improved lubrication of the pinion needle rollers (See Figure 52). A steel ball was also installed on the back side of each pinion pin to seal off any possible loss of lube oll (See Figure 52). (2) Reaction Ring Gear Support - The reaction ring gear support also had to be modified to fit the reaction carrier assembly with the oil deflector pressed on it (See Figure 53) INTERCHANGEABILITY’ (1) The reaction carrier with the oil deflector will fit all previous models, but you MUST use the new ring gear support with the new carrier. (2) The new ring gear support can be used in all previous model 700-Ré transmis- sions. PARTS AFFECTED: (1) Turbine Shaft - Increased diameter between sealing rings, increased diameter of bushing journal area where it rides in pump cover, and increased spline diameter (298mm Only) to turbo 350 size (See Figure 57). (2) Pump Cover - Because of increased diameter of bushing journal area, a revised pump cover was needed to accommodate the new turbine shaft. (8) Torque Converter - Because of the increased spline diameter (298mm Only), a new torque converter was needed to accommodate the new turbine shaft. INTERCHANGEABILITY: (1) You will not be able to install the early torque converter on the late turbine shaft It will not fit. (2) If the late torque converter is installed on the early turbine shaft (It Will Fit), the vehicle will not move. (3) You will not be able to install the early pump cover on the late turbine shaft. It will not fit. (4) If the late pump cover is installed on the early turbine shaft (It Will Fit), severe converter drain back will be the result. ‘SERVICE INFORMATION: In an effort to keep the cost of repairing the transmission to a minimum, another service turbine shaft and housing was designed to service 1982 thru 1984 models utilizing the original pump cover and original torque converter. The 3rd design shaft is a larger diameter only in the area that counts, between the seal rings where it used to break. Refer to Figure 57. As you can see there are potentially six different design turbine shafts for the 700-R4 transmission and parts compatibility is the key.
