BUM 2123/BUM2143 SEMESTER I– 2022/2023

APPLIED CALCULUS ASSIGNMENT

DUE DATE: Friday, 27 January 2023 (before 5.00 PM) TOTAL MARKS: 60

OBJECTIVES:

The objectives of this assignment are to test your understanding in solving a wide range of problems
in science and engineering by using the concept of calculus and to develop your TEAM WORKING
skills and INTEGRITY in reporting your assignment. Work together in your group and please be
honest with all the calculations since copying/cheating is extremely prohibited.

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. This is a group assignment. The group members are already formed randomly by your lecturer
and corresponded to different set of questions. Exchange any of group members are NOT
allowed. Kindly refer to your lecturer.
2. You must provide handwritten solutions. Do not give typed solution, except for Question 1.
3. All the assumptions and calculations must be clearly stated.
4. Use the template on page 2 as the cover of your assignment booklet. Fill in all the required
info clearly.
5. Mode of submission either softcopy via UDAS or hard copy depend on your lecturer’s
instructions. Submission file via UDAS must be in PDF format only. All answer sheets
must be compiled in one file.
6. Late submission of the assignment will not be entertained.

sketch the graph of the following equations in 3 – dimensional space and print screen the
codes/commands.

z + 3 = x2 + ( y − 4)

QUESTION 2

An ant climbs up the trunk of a tree following the path modelled by the circular helix of
r (t ) = 3cos t , 3sin t , t

i) Find the length of the trunk helix that has the reference point r (0) = 3i in terms of t.

ii) If the ant starts at the point ( 3, 0, 0 ) and climbs up the trunk helix for a distance of 10

units, what is the ant’s final position?

ii) Find the curvature of the path along the trunk helix at the point ( 3, 0, 0 ) .

QUESTION 3

Tiara is one of the famous Malaysian mountaineers. During his visit to Tibet, he discovers new
mountain in the area of Gyangtse. If the mountain is modelled as

f ( x, y ) = − x 4 − y 4 + 2 xy

where x and y is measured in mile, estimate the relative maximum height of the mountain he has
to climb in metres.

QUESTION 4

Suppose electrical charge is distributed over a region, which has area R in the xy-plane and its
charge density is defined by the function,  ( x, y ) . Then, the total charge Q of the plate is defined

by the expression

Q =   ( x, y ) dA
R

If the electric charge is distributed over the disk ( x − 4 ) + y 2 = 16 and its charge density is
2

 ( x, y ) = 81( x 2 + y 2 ) ,

use double integral in polar coordinates to calculate the total charge of the disk. (Sketch and shade
the region R).
