2 WATERPROOFING
3.2.1. Introduction of waterproofing:
 Waterproofing is the process of making a structure watertight by forming an
impermeable barrier that prevents the ingress of water
 It reduces the moisture content of interior, exterior and subfloor surfaces to prevent
water damage and structural failure.
 Waterproofing of buildings is done in sunken areas, roofs, terraces, basements,
balconies, elevated tanks and expansion joints.
 The various waterproofing methods include-
a) cementitious waterproofing
b) liquid waterproofing membranes
c) bituminous waterproofing
d) bituminous coatings
e) Liquid polyurethane membranes
Advantages of waterproofing:
 It reduces the formation of cracks in the concrete floor.
 Increases the service life of any solid construction.
 It prevents the reinforcement from corroding.
 Waterproofing the roof can contribute to insulation by lowering the temperature of
the room. This reduces the cost of air conditioning and thus increases efficiency.
3.2.2 Responsibility and Accountability Description:
 Contractor Project Manager - Responsible for providing all necessary
resources to accomplish the planned tasks and for maintaining the schedule
of activities.
 Construction Manager - Ensures that all activities are performed in
accordance with derived procedures, drawings, and specifications.
 QA/QC Engineer - Responsible for checking the quality and quantity of all
work before and after execution. Also maintains all records and documents
required as part of the quality assurance plan.
 Safety Engineer - Ensures all activities are performed in accordance with
safety guidelines and maintains all records and documents required under
the Health and Safety Plan.

3.2.4 Work Methodology: (Reference: https://isomat-pu-systems.com/)

Preparation of the substrate
The substrate must be dry (moisture content < 4%) and free from loose parts, dust, grease,
etc.
Local renovations or repairs of the roof elements (concrete, cement, etc.) are carried out
with the polymer-modified, fibre-reinforced cement mortar type PCC R3 DUROCRET-PLUS.
If it is necessary to fill or create a full slope layer, the ready-to-use cement screed SCREED -
100 can be used.
Priming the surface
Once the materials that may have been used to smooth the substrate have dried, apply the
one-component polyurethane primer PRIMER-PU 100 to the clean and dry concrete surface
(moisture content < 4%). The primer is applied evenly to the surface with a brush, roller or
by spraying.
If the substrate has a moisture content of > 4%, instead of the polyurethane primer PRIMER-
PU 100, apply PRIMER-PU 140, a two-component polyurethane primer for surfaces with high
moisture content.

Application of polyurethane, waterproofing, liquid membrane ISOFLEX-PU 500.Complete

sealing of the surface
Before application, it is recommended to lightly stir ISOFLEX-PU 500 until it becomes
homogeneous. Extensive stirring should be avoided to prevent air pockets in the material.
ISOFLEX is applied by brush or roller in 2 coats. The first coat is applied 2-3 hours after
priming, while PRIMER-PU 100 is still tacky. The second coat is applied crosswise after 8-24
hours depending on weather conditions. It is recommended to reinforce ISOFLEX with the
polyester fleece along the edges at the connections of the flat roof to vertical elements
parapet, stair ends, pipe connections, ventilation connections, metal element connections,
etc. Once the polyurethane primer PRIMER-PU 100 has cured (about 2-3 hours), a layer of
liquid polyurethane waterproofing membrane ISOFLEX is applied along the connections and,
while it is still fresh, a 10 cm wide strip of polyester fleece is embedded. After 8-24 hours,
depending on weather conditions, the second layer of liquid polyurethane waterproofing
membrane is applied. After 8-24 hours, depending on weather conditions, a third layer is
applied in places where the reinforcement was used for complete coverage.

In cases where individual cracks are present in the substrate:

Once the polyurethane primer PRIMER-PU 100 has cured (approx. 2-3 hours), a layer of
liquid polyurethane waterproofing membrane ISOFLEX is applied along the cracks and, while
it is still fresh, a 10 cm wide strip of polyester fleece is embedded. ISOFLEX is applied
completely over the remaining area in a single coat. After 8-24 hours, depending on weather
conditions, a complete second layer of liquid polyurethane waterproofing membrane
ISOFLEX is applied. After 8-24 hours, depending on weather conditions, a third coat is
applied to areas where reinforcement has been used to provide complete coverage.

3.2.5 Pre-application measures:

 Waterproofing coatings will not be applied to exterior surfaces during rainy, foggy or
windy weather.
 All electrical wiring shall be sealed with grout prior to the application of the
waterproofing coat.
 Surfaces to which the waterproofing coating is to be applied must be dry and free of
loose coatings and curing compounds.
 Drains and damaged concrete surfaces should be inspected and repaired before the
waterproofing coating is applied.
