Különös örömöm telik benne, hogy ismét nekem jutott a szerencse,
Gulliver hatodik, eddig ismeretlen úti naplóját kiadni és bemutatni a
közönségnek. Kitünő elődöm a Gulliver-féle kéziratok és hagyatékok
felkutatásában és sajtó alá rendezésében, Swift Jonathán, kétszáz évvel
ezelőtt négy teljes útinaplót hozott nyilvánosságra, Gulliver’s Travels
címen a Liliputban, Brobdingnagban, Laputában és Hahnhnhms-
országban szerzett benyomások anyagából. Ezelőtt mintegy két
esztendővel sikerült rábukkannom – sajnos, csak töredékekben – az
ötödik eredeti Gulliver-kézirat egy másolatára, melyet Utazás
Faremidóba cimen állítottam össze – a kitünő utazó barátai és szelíd,
istenfélő eszméinek kedvelői bizonyára emlékeznek még erre a könyvre,
mely, ha a benne foglalt csekély jelentőségű földrajzi és néprajzi
adatokra való tekintettel, nem is mérhető Stanley vagy Nansen, vagy
akár Vámbéry halhatatlan műveihez, – megfigyeléseinek jámbor és
becsületes hűsége s ama lángoló hazaszeretet és emberszeretet révén,
mely az egészet besugározza, bizonyára odasorozható ama művek közé,
melyeket minden pedagógus nyugodtan ajánlhat az ifjúság okulására és
ismereteinek fejlesztésére éppen úgy, mint a társadalmi együttérzés
istápolására: – olyan erények ezek, melyek Gulliver minden eddig ismert
írásában fellelhetők. Itt következő útleírását, mely Capilláriáról, azaz a
női nem országáról szól, a benne foglalt tájfestésektől és, bár nem
nagyigényű, de hű és megbizható topográfiai és természetrajzi
megfigyelésektől eltekintve, – főként az a meleg és tiszta szeretet tünteti
ki s teszi eléggé nem ajánlható olvasmányává mindazoknak, akik nem
hajmeresztő és tarka fantasztikumot keresnek, hanem őszinteséget és
egyszerűséget, mellyel szerzőnk a családi élet idilli szépségét, a férfi és
nő viszonyának boldog örömeit s mindazokat a bölcsen felállított emberi
és isteni törvényeket dicséri, melyek a fennálló társadalomban lehetővé
teszik, hogy férfi és nő nemes összhangban élhetnek együtt a dicső
emberi fajta fejlődésére és boldogulására.
