Leopold’s Maneuver is a technique used by a health care provider to determine the baby’s position in the
womb – both facing (up or down) and lie (to the left or right).
Leopold’s Maneuver preferably performed after 24 weeks gestation when fetal outline can already
palpated.

Preparation:
1. Instruct woman to empty her bladder first.
2. Place woman in dorsal recumbent position, supine with knees flexed to relax abdominal
muscles. Place a small pillow under the head for comfort.
3. Drape properly to maintain privacy.
4. Explain procedure to the patient.
5. Warms hands by rubbing together
6. Use the palm for palpation not the finger.

I. First Maneuver: Using both hands, feel for the fetal part lying in the
Fundal Grip fundus.
II. Second One hand is used to steady the uterus on one side of the
Maneuver: abdomen while the other hand moves slightly on a
Umbilical Grip circular motion from top to the lower segment of the
uterus to feel for the fetal parts.
Use gentle but deep pressure.
III. Third Maneuver: Using thumb and finger, grasp the lower portion of the
Pawlik’s Grip abdomen above symphysis pubis, press in slightly and
make gently movements from side to side.
IV. Fourth Facing foot part of the woman, place hands on the sides
Maneuver: of the lower abdomen close to the midline. Slide hands
Pelvic Grip downward and press inward.
