Term Exam 2
Homework 6 and 7
This take-home assignment serves as Homeworks 6 and 7 as well as Term Exam 2. It is comprised
of one problem with multiple parts. HW 6, 7, and TE2 are comprised of parts as indicated.
You have from 10/11/2023 to 10/25/2023 to complete this work. A complete submission is
comprised of a single PDF file emailed to ryounis@utulsa.edu at r before 3PM CST on 10/25/2023.
The PDF should contain hand-written or typed solutions and any sketches you wish to draw or
plot.
Rules:
1. You are permitted the following: read any electronic or written document that was not
prepared by another colleague in class. Verbal discussion with class mates and others
without written communication/exchange of information.
2. Plagiarism is strictly forbidden.
3. In person and virtual instruction while writing your solution is forbidden.
We will develop solutions to the modified steady problem governed by,
Δ𝑃 − 𝛼 2 𝑃 = −𝑓(𝒙) 𝑥∈Ω
(1) { 𝑃(𝒙) = 𝑔(𝒙) 𝑥 ∈ 𝜕Ω1
∇𝑃. 𝒏]𝑥 = 𝑞(𝑥) 𝑥 ∈ 𝜕Ω2
where Ω ⊂ ℝ2 is a domain with a boundary comprised of two parts, i.e., 𝜕Ω = 𝜕Ω1 ∪ 𝜕Ω2 . In the problem,
we will consider specific examples with given descriptions for the right-hand sides of the governing
equation (1) and various domain geometries.
In Homework 5, you showed that the Fundamental Solution,
1
Φ(𝒚 − 𝒙) = 𝐾 (𝛼‖𝒚 − 𝒙‖2 )
2𝜋 0
satisfies the following equation,
b) (1 point for HW 7) Suppose that 𝜕Ω2 = ∅ and, therefore, 𝜕Ω = 𝜕Ω1 (i.e., pressure is known on the
entire boundary). Let
G(𝒚 − 𝒙) ≔ Φ(𝒚 − 𝒙) − ℎ𝑦 (𝒙),
Δℎ𝑦 − 𝛼 2 ℎ𝑦 = 0 𝑥∈Ω
{ℎ𝑦 (𝒙) = Φ(𝒚 − 𝒙) 𝑥 ∈ 𝜕Ω1 .
ℎ𝑦 (𝒙) ≢ Φ(𝒚 − 𝒙) 𝑥∈Ω
What conditions must ℎ𝑦 (𝒙) satisfy in this case in order for this to be true?
d) (12.5 points for TE 2) Consider the specific scenario where the boundary is the horizontal axis on which
rate is known and the reservoir of interest is the upper semi-infinite plane. That is 𝜕Ω1 = ∅, 𝜕Ω2 =
{(𝑥1 , 𝑥2 )𝑇 : 𝑥2 = 0, −∞ < 𝑥1 < ∞ }, and Ω = {(𝑥1 , 𝑥2 )𝑇 : 𝑥2 > 0, −∞ < 𝑥1 < ∞ }. The rate on the
boundary is a constant q=500, and they are no sources or sinks so that 𝑓 = 0. Derive the analytical
solution for 𝑃, and compute the solution’s value at location 𝒚 = (2.3, 3.2)𝑇 .
e) (12.5 points for TE 2) Consider the same specific geometric scenario, except that now, the pressure
along the boundary is fixed at a known value g=0. Moreover, there is one line source in the reservoir
so that,
