CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Mt. Isarog in Goa, Camarines Sur was proclaimed as the natural park under the protection
of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources partnership with the European Union
for the conservation of Nature. It has a total area of 10,112 hectares, it is identified as having a
rich diversity of flora and fauna found on the base of the slopes of the mountain.

The Protected Area Management Board has also identified Hiwacloy where the forests are
endemic. The mountain forest abounds with Mt. Isarog and also the narrow strip of lowland
forest above c.900 m remained rather safe from forest clearing because of those steep topography
and the deficiency of large dipterocarp trees.

Study of trees is generally termed dendrology where it is fundamental to identify the total
diversity of trees (Rennols & Laumonier 2000). This includes the two branches such as
Taxonomy, the systematic classification of plant species and Nomenclature, the identification
and naming of species. Dendrology covers the botanical characterization of species, its
geographical distributions (both local and worldwide). Dendrological study of different trees is a
vital component in managing a forest resource. It provides various information basic or
fundamental to its production, utilization and conservation activities. The performance of actual
dendrological study would substantiate their knowledge not only in identifying trees but will
provide better understanding about the importance of the subject and the data which will be
gathered will serve as basic for other studies, more exhaustive and more comprehensive
development objectives of the area. The result of the study will be helpful in improving the
generated date and precise figure that practically represents tree diversity in the Brgy, Hiwacloy
in Mt. Isarog. The study aimed to determine the Composition of old growth forests.

Problem Statement
This study aimed to know the Dendrological Composition of old Growth forests in Hiwacloy
Goa, Camarines Sur. To attain all the significance knowledge, data, and information, the research
wish to answer the following problems;

a. What is the species composition of an old growth forest in Hiwacloy Goa, Camarines
Sur?
b. What are the physical structures of the tree species? What are the dendrological and
abiotic factors of the old growth forest in Hiwacloy Goa, Camarines Sur?
c. What is/are the current problem/s of the old growth forest and the possible measures that
can be recommended?
d. What are the threat's present in the old growth forest in Hiwacloy?

The problems stated might have not encountered any scope by the Department of Environment
Natural Resources in the area.

The researcher has a chief concern to conduct this study to provide additional information that
will serve as a contribution to the Department of Environment Natural Resources and also
became references containing data from the area.

Objectives
a. Determine the species composition of old growth forest in Hiwacloy Goa, Camarines Sur.
b. Study the physical structures of the tree species.
c. Evaluate the dendrological and attributes and other threats present in the forest area in
Hiwacloy Goa, Camarines Sur.

Scope and Limitation

The study was limited to the dendrological characterization of the old forest growth in Hiwacloy.
The old growth forest species are those which are already existing as merchantable or
harvestable but not harvested and remain as the oldest natural stand in the area.

The new or secondary forests are those which were established through artificial and generated
through successive logging operations in the area. For the purpose of the study a 10 percent
sampling intensity of the stand was employed and thus information was limited to the extent of
the said sample size. All units were per hectare basis.

Another limitation of the study is the inaccessibility of some samples to be practically included
in the data gathered process due to steepness of topography.

Significance of the Study

This study will benefit the following:

Students. This study will serve as a reference for students and teachers in conducting researches
in line with the dendrological composition of old growth.

New Generation. So they can still see the beauty and good benefits of this dendrological
composition of old growth to all human being.

Scientist. Through this study they can discover new and effective medicines or products came
from this dendrological composition of old growth that help to cure some diseases.

Historian. Through this they can document and write additional information about this different
dendrological composition of old growth found in our country.

Community. The result of this study will gave them additional information if necessary for
further researcher about the dendrological composition of old growth that are present at
Hiwakloy Goa, Camarines Sur.

Government. The local government can guide or encourage more tourist to visit and learn about
our dendrological composition of old growth in our country because it became one of the assets
of our country.
