Quarter 1: Week 7 – Module 8
Target

We begin by discussing the concept of a sequence. Intuitively, a

sequence is an ordered list of objects or events. For instance, the sequence of
events at a crime scene is important for understanding the nature of the crime. In
this module we will be interested in sequences of a more mathematical nature;
mostly we will be interested in sequences of numbers.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

c. illustrate series. STEM_PC11SMI- Ih-1

d. differentiate a series from a sequence. STEM_PC11SMI- Ih-2

Before going on, check how much you know about this
topic. Answer the pretest on the next page in a separate

For you to understand the lesson well, do the following

activities. Have fun and good luck!

Activity 1: DO YOU STILL KNOW ME?

Directions: Read the concepts of series and sequence.
A “sequence” is an ordered list of numbers; the numbers in this ordered list
are called the “elements” of the “terms” of the sequence.

Arithmetic Sequence – it is a sequence in which the difference between every

successive terms is constant. It could be in ascending or descending form
according to constant number. The common difference is represented by 韈 .

Geometric Sequence – it is a sequence of numbers where each successive

number is the product of the previous number and some constant t . The constant
factor t is called the common difference.

A “series” is what you get when you add up all the terms of a sequence; the
addition, and also the resulting value, are called the “sum” or the “summation”.

A. Write SEQ if the given item is a sequence, write SER if it is a series.

Answer:
1. 1, 6, 36, 216, 1296… ___________

What is a sequence? What is a series?

 A sequence is a function whose  A series represents the sum of the
domain is the set of positive terms of a sequence.
integers or the set
 A sequence is a list of numbers  A series is a sum of numbers
( separated by commas ). (separated by “+ “or “- “
 If a sequence is finite, we will refer
to the sum of the terms of the
sequence as the series associated
with the sequence.
 The sequence which have a
limited or finite number of terms
is called finite sequence.

Examples of finite sequence Examples of a series

1. -11, -13.8, -16. 6, -19.4 1. -11 + -13.8 + -16.6 + -19.4
2. -30, -50, -70, -90, -110 2. -30 + -50 + -70 + -90 + -110
3. 4, 12, 36, 108, 324 3. 4 + 12 + 36 + 108 + 324

 The sequence which have  The sequence with th term is

unlimited number of terms or it usually denoted by , and the
has no end is called infinite associated series is given by

Examples of infinite sequence: Example:

1. 3, 11, 19, 27, …

sequence, its associated series is -
30 + -50 + -70 + -90 + -110 = -

3. 4, 12, 36, 108, 324 is a sequence,
its associated series is 4 + 12 + 36
+ 108 + 324 = 484

 An arithmetic sequence is a
sequence in which each term
after the first is obtained by
adding a constant (called the
common difference denoted as 韈 )
to the preceding term.
 If the th of an arithmetic
sequence is and the common  The associated arithmetic series
difference is 韈, then with terms is given by

 A geometric sequence is a
sequence in which each term
after the first term is obtained by
multiplying the preceding term by
a constant (called the common
ratio)
