This technical report centered on comparing the specifications of five distinct Vertical
Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) concerning various
parameters and factors that influence and serve as the foundation for designing VTOL
UAV aircraft. The comparative analysis focuses primarily on key parameters in VTOL UAV
design.
Examining weight, a fundamental element in aircraft design, revealed that among the
five, the SuperBird VTOL UAV stands as the lightest with a gross weight of merely 2.8 kg.
In contrast, the JOUAV CW-15E boasts the highest gross weight at 34 kg. It’s essential
for a UAV to possess an optimal weight to fully harness its power and capabilities.
The next critical parameter is payload capacity. VTOL UAVs can be tailored to transport
a range of payloads, including cameras, sensors, and other equipment. Design
considerations must carefully account for payload weight and size. JOUAV CW-15E
emerged as the leader in this category, with the ability to carry an impressive 8.37 kg of
payload.
The third parameter revolves around performance. Endurance and range are vital
advantages, as they enable the UAV to cover more ground. China BlueShark UAV
showcased exceptional endurance, with a maximum of 228 minutes at its suggested
payload, while the Dragon VTOL UAV demonstrated the greatest range, covering up to
160,000 meters or 160 km.
In conclusion, the selection of a VTOL UAV design should align with specific requirements
and priorities. For those emphasizing payload capacity, extended endurance, or expanded
range, this analysis serves as an invaluable point of reference for making informed
decisions. The varied capabilities of these VTOL UAVs provide options for diverse mission
profiles and applications within the continually evolving realm of unmanned aerial
systems.
