Note from Ms. Paranjape!

Hi everyone! I wanted to use this newsletter as an

opportunity to announce that we will be incorporating two
new programs, Splash Learn and the Fractions App, into our
mathematics curriculum! Both programs will be used to help
students gain further understanding about rational numbers,
and specifically learn more about fractions. The programs are
easy to use and will be set up on your child’s iPad at school. I
encourage you to use these programs with your child at
home to help them gain more math practice! They can be
used to review content your child struggles with or introduce
them to new content. I will use the rest of this newsletter to
go over the content of these apps and why we will be using
them in class. If you have any questions, my contact
information is at the bottom of this page!

Splash Learn
Splash Learn is a website that offers a variety of math
games for our third graders! This website will benefit
your children by allowing them to work on their math
skills in a way that is fun and engaging for them.
Splash Learn makes children excited to learn math and
new skills! In addition, Splash Learn is helpful because
it gives me assignment reports for each student and
lets me give students individualized lessons based on
the skills that they need to work on. I have also found
that Splash Learn is easy to use for students and is
great because it allows students to work at their own
pace. I will use Splash Learn to help students learn
about fractions by having them complete the fractions
module on the Splash Learn website.
Fractions
As you know, our third graders are learning about
fractions. Splash Learn helps students build a
strong fraction foundation. We will start by having
students practice identifying fractions when given
a fraction circle, writing whole numbers as
fractions, and identifying and placing fractions on
a number line. Splash Learn also has lessons
where students can compare fractions with the
same denominator or the same numerator, and
includes problems in which students have to
figure out which fraction is greater than the other.
Students will also learn about equivalent fractions
and will generate visuals to figure out if two
fractions are equal. Splash Learn is unique
because it allows students to play games, such as
Jelly Shooter, to explore fractions. In addition,
Splash Learn does an excellent job of giving
problems that relate to the real world - such as
comparing fractions to pizza slices. Overall,
students will learn more about understanding,
representing, and comparing fractions through
Splash Learn.

The Fractions App
The Fractions App is an app that will allow our
third graders to explore fractions in a new way.
This app will benefit our students by allowing
them to engage with and create visual
representations of fractions, which will expand
their understanding of fractions. The Fractions
App is also colorful and engaging for students,
which makes students more incentivized to learn
about fractions! This app is easy to use for
students. I will be using the Fractions App during
the fractions unit to present problems to
students in a unique way.
Fractions
Through the Fractions App, our third graders will start to
gain a strong understanding of fractions. The app will
allow students to be able to connect fractions to their
visual representations. Through the app, students will be
challenged to compare fractions based on looking at
fraction bars and fraction circles. Students will also be
able to create visual representations of fractions through
the app. I will be able to ask students questions such as
“create a visual representation of the fraction 1/2” or
“create a fraction that is less than 1/3” using this app. I
will also give students a set of representations of
different fractions and ask them which is equal to one
third, for example. This app will also be used to help
students identify patterns in a set of fractions and
continue the pattern. Furthermore, when given word
problems involving fractions, students can use this app to
create visual representations of the fractions in order to
reach an answer. Overall, this app will allow students to
learn about representing fractions in multiple ways,
fraction equivalency, comparing fractions, and solving
fraction problems by creating visuals. By looking at the

 How This Relates to Our
Curriculum as a Whole

We will be using Splash Learn and the Fractions App to help develop our student’s
fraction skills. This will set them up for developing a further understanding of rational
numbers, and specifically, learning about decimals in the fourth grade. In addition, I will
be giving students a brief introduction to the topic of ratios later this year to help with
their understanding of rational numbers. Furthermore, I believe that apps and websites
make students more excited and engaged in mathematics by offering fun games and
problems. I plan on incorporating more technology into the classroom as the year goes
on, and will discuss any new technology in the curriculum in our following newsletters. If
