Light Reflection & Plane Mirror

Week 1
Learning Objectives

Describe the formation, and give the characteristics, of an optical image by a plane
mirror.
Use the law angle of incidence = angle of reflection
Perform simple constructions, measurements and calculations
How do you see your reflection?
what happens when light strikes a mirror?
To understand more about reflection. We need to know about
law of reflection. You can access the link or qr code below.
Physics Simulation: Plane Mirror Image (physicsclassroom.com)
Activity 1 - 10 mins
Image Formation

Place the plane mirror on the table or the floor.

Place an object standing in front of the mirror and observe its reflection.
Describe the characteristics of the image formed
Measure and record the angles of incidence and reflection for different points on the
mirror surface
Activity 2 - 10 mins
Law of Reflection

Take a light beam (Laser pointer) and shine it onto the mirror surface at different
angles of incidence.
Measure the angle of incidence and the angle of reflection using portractors and verify
that they are equal, as per the law of reflection.
Finding an image position by construction

Summary
- The angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection
- Plane mirrors produce virtual images
- The image formed by a plane mirror is located the same distance behind the
mirror as the object is in front of it.
- The size of the image in a plane mirror is the same as the size of the object.
- The light rays from the object strike the mirror and reflect off it
