The Benefits of Eating Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are high in vitamins, minerals and fibre. There is a rainbow of colours
to choose from which provides a rich source of antioxidants instead of sugary snacks and fast food
that are high in fat and sugar. The vitamins, minerals, fibre and antioxidants found in fruits and
vegetables provide a lot of benefits. It is important for children to receive the benefits from a wide
range of these essential nutrients by eating a variety of both fruits and vegetables. For example,
most vegetables have a lot more sources of calcium, iron and folate while fruits are higher in
calories compared to most vegetables.

Eating fruits and vegetables will promote good health and protect against disease, both
now and in the future. It also ensures children’s healthy growth and development. The vitamins
and minerals help to strengthen a child’s immune system to fight illnesses. There is strong
evidence to show that the nutrients found in fruits and vegetables can prevent chronic diseases
such as cardiovascular diseases. The high-fibre content can aid in the proper function of the
digestive system and prevent constipation.

ANIMALS IN THE OCEAN

A Dolphin

Dolphins feed chiefly on fish and squid which they track using
echolocation, a built-in sonar that bounces sound waves off prey
and reveals information like its location, size and
shape. Dolphins are intensely social mammals and they can talk
to each other just like humans. As mammals, they have warm
blood and nurse their young. Dolphins are graceful and sleek
swimmers that can reach speeds of more than 18 miles an hour.
They are one of the most intelligent animals in the world.

B Whale

Whales communicate with complex and mysterious sounds. Their

sheer size amazes us. The blue whale can reach lengths of more
than 31 metres and weigh up to 20,000 kilograms which is as much
weight of 33 elephants. They are warm-blooded mammals and
nurse their young. A thick layer of fat called blubber insulates
them from cold ocean waters. Lately, the whale species are
endangered because of fishing net entanglements and being
struck by ships.

C Shark
Sharks are found in deep and shallow waters throughout the
world’s oceans with some migrating to remote areas to breed.
Most sharks eat smaller fish and invertebrates but some of the
larger species prey on seals, sea lions and other bigger marine
mammals. People aren’t on a shark’s menu. Sharks bite people
out of curiosity to defend themselves from a perceived threat or
because they confuse a human with a prey. Overfishing is the
biggest threat to sharks. An estimated 100 million sharks are
killed each year, mostly to supply demand for an expensive
Chinese dish called shark fin soup.
