Week 2 (18-22/2/13)

1. Before class: Print attendance sheets plus 1 copy of the Advanced Search template emailed Wed
evening.
2. Library Tour
2.1. Leave class for Library 10 minutes after scheduled class start time. NB: Leave suitable sign
on the classroom door for any late comers.
2.2. Wendy Hazler and Angus will meet you in the foyer (level 2) and split the class into 2 groups
and conduct the tour.
2.3. Join whichever group suits you.
2.4. When finished return to class with your class.
3. Back in class circulate the 2 attendance sheets.
4. Get each student to also collect a copy of the Advanced Search Template provided.
5. Repeat: Mark’s defined expectation of a person with competent search skills is that you should
be able to:

find 95% of your searches within 3 minutes.


6. Remind students of the need for a dual search strategy.
6.1. Broadly search initially and then home in:
6.2. Eliminate the bulk of web content you are NOT interested in: only if you are certain your
target pages/documents will NOT contain these terms.
7. Get students to bring up the Google Advanced Search page.
8. Ask how many students found at least 3 lists of common Aerospace Engineering terms.
8.1. If only a few students have done so, get the class to do in class. Go around and observe
the search terms and advanced search facilities being used and provide individual verbal
feedback & (if needed) class feedback on the whiteboard.
8.2. They should be searching for something similar to the following:
8.2.1. Keywords: common terms list
8.2.2. Phrase: Aerospace Engineering
8.2.3. If pdf file save; if web page copy url and save into Word docx and type brief
comments about each list found.

9. Now verbally (do not write it out) ask the class to find the following (get them to write down on
the Advanced Search template provided what they have understood they are supposed to find):
9.1. Latest review report or inquiry on the Aerospace Industry in Australia.
9.2. NB: Typically 3 ways National reviews are initiated/conducted by:
9.2.1. Government initiated review conducted by an appropriate Government Department
9.2.2. Parliamentary Inquiry conducted by a sub-committee of the Parliament
9.2.3. Senate Inquiry conducted by a sub-committee of the Senate
9.2.4. NB: Usually published on a government website
9.3. Students should review the top 10-20 hits and then click on the back button and refine their
Advanced Search page request plus update their printed search template.
9.4. They should be searching for something similar to the following:
9.4.1. Keywords: common terms list
9.4.2. Phrase: Aerospace Engineering
9.4.3. If pdf file save; if web page copy url and save into Word docx and type brief
comments about each list found.
9.4.4. When you are reviewing what they have done get them to click on the back button
and review their Advanced Search page terms and their use of the choices provided.
10. Provide a few practice searches of your own (ideally some that are relevant to one of their 1305
Term courses.
10.1. Issue your search requests verbally and check that the students are correctly
recording the full search request correctly.
10.2. Check they are breaking the request up into suitable sub-sets on their search sheets
10.3. Have correctly inserted the appropriate request parts into the correct Advanced
Search boxes, etc.
11. Record your exact questions (for yourself) and any that you ask them to practice for Week 3 (so
you can follow it up next week).
12. Ask students to find the latest Australian Government body’s report on Global warming and
the expected sea level rise around Australia over the next 30-100 years.
12.1.1. Keywords: rise expected Australia report
12.1.2. Phrase: sea level
12.1.3. File type: pdf
12.1.4. Domain: .gov.au
12.1.5. When you are reviewing what they have done get them to click on the back button
and review their Advanced Search page terms and their use of the choices provided.

13. NB: Remind students to turn up next week and be on time (likely to have arranged a visit to the
Study and Learning Centre.
