Course Objectives:

a. Express an understanding of sociology’s contributions to other disciplines such as Law, History and other social sciences.
b. Elaborate an understanding of the usefulness and limitations of the sociological theories and various concepts and thoughts
c. Illustrate the nature of Indian Society with major institutional blocs with special reference to (Family, Marriage, Kinship, Education, Religion,
etc) in the legal framework
d. Describe the role of culture and social structure in determining individual lives and be able to offer and identify illustrations of these processes.
e. Explain the effects of caste, class, gender and other forms of difference on society and be able to provide significant examples of
these effects.
f. Students ought to be able to identify the effect of law through sociological understanding at individual, institutional, and cultural
levels.

Pre-requisites:

The student should have a preliminary understanding of elementary social concepts.

What is Sociology? , A Brief History of the Development of Sociology: Nature and Scope of Sociology, Relevance
of Sociology for the Study of law; Relation with other social sciences: History, Anthropology, Psychology and
Political Science;
Eminent Sociologist: August Comte, Emile Durkheim & Herbert Spencer.

Module II Basic Concepts 10%

Marriage: Meaning and Definition, Features, Functions, Types


Family: Definition, Function of Family, Types.
Kinship: Definition, Classification, Degree and Forms.

Module IV Social Control 20%

Social Control: Meaning and Functions, Distinction between formal and informal social control;
Informal Agencies of Social Control: Customs, Folkways, Mores, Norms and Values
Formal Agencies: Law, Media and Coercion.

Module V Social Change in India 20%

Meaning; Nature or Characteristics of Social Change;


Factors of Social Change: Biological, Education, Technological, Social Legislation.

Module VI Social Issues-I 10 %

Domestic Violence, Beggary, Child Marriage, Youth Unrest and Human Trafficking.
Course Learning Outcomes:
a. The course indulges in vigorous learning and critical thinking.
b. The course examines the sociological concepts that account for deviance, and social control
c. The course turns out to be recognizable with various types of social institutions (family, marriage, education, religion, health, leisure, criminal justice and
political systems, and economic systems) and their development over time.
d. To examine course content and test its applicability to the Indian society.
e. The course helps in recognizing with how different types of social institutions (education, religion, health, leisure, criminal justice, political systems, and
economic systems) interact with Indian families and effect there working.

Pedagogy for Course Delivery:

Case studies based on social issues will be conversed and analyzed in class. Experts shall come and discuss their knowledge with students. The class will be taught using
theory and case based method. The basic objective of the course is to equip the students with the understanding of Sociology. Case studies will be taken up to
illustrate real life situations. Will open the platform for two-way communication and discussion.
