The Problem

Introduction

The incidences of broken marriages are on the increase, as well as the failure of children
in all levels of education(Bubelwa, 2014).According to Ghaerba (2001) broken home is a situation
whereby one’s family is submerged with misunderstanding of marriage and family structure. Egbo
(2012) viewed broken home as a place where the parents engage themselves in quarrelling, fighting
suspecting, keeping late hours to the detriment of the children’s primary drive for food, sleep and
other basic needs. Broken homes are in various aspects and these include: divorce, separation and
death of either of the parents.

Broken home is generally associated with increased stress and emotional difficulties
among children, several aspects have a mediating effect. The amount of family conflict
experienced by the children, their religious background, age, and place in the sibling order were
reported to have a vital impact on their efforts to adapt to this transition(Farber,Primevera&Felner,
1993).

As the home become insecure, children respond by developing tension, prostration and
aggression and anger and hatred toward one or both parents because of their behaviour, that lead
to separation. Broken homes could cause the children to feel isolation and humpies, hence, they
are frustrated and psychologically disturbed even when they are in classroom. As a result, they
cannot do well in the school activities.

Parental relationship plays a very important role in determining the academic performance
of their children in school. Children that grow up in a broken home are unlikely to develop their
academic potentials to the fullest while children brought up in a stabilized and organized home are
more likely to develop to a full fledge of human beings, being able to discover their academic and
other attributes leading to success in life endeavor.

The influence of broken home on the academic achievements of students is beyond

measure, when a home is broken, children are affected in many ways for example the girls amongst
them may run into men in order to pay their school fees some of them may get pregnant in the
process which might warrant them to quit, education entirely (Okoye, 2001). Nwosu(1991) noted
that some girls too go after prostitution in a bid to also pay their school fees which may be difficult
for their single parents. Boys also give in to robbery roistering in the school, joining criminal gangs
and exhibiting all form of social vices. These results in loss of concentration during class hours
leading to poor academic performance and loss of focus on education. It is in light of this that the
researchers sought to assess the impact of broken homes on students’ academic performance at
Aboadze Dar-Nnur Islamic .

The family guides, teaches good manners, provides for needs, and loves without
recompense. The family is the smallest unit of society consisting of the Father, Mother, and its
children. The family has a great influence especially on children because it is the reason for the
uplift and perseverance in life. According to Beth Morrisey (2017) The Mother serves as the light
of the home and there are different types of connections between mother and child, one of which
is the cuddle connection and breastfeeding which releases a hormone called oxytocin, in this
connection there is a benefit between mother and child. Dad is the protector, the pillar of the home
and works hard so that he can support his family. The Son serves as a reward for all that parents
do and inspiration.

According to Pierangelo Alejo (2004), the family is the main social institution formed by
the marriage of a man and a woman because of their selfless, pure, and romantic love — both
committed to be together until the end of their lives. There are also different types of families based
on the number of members of a family and this includes the Extended Family. This means that the
main family includes other relatives such as grandparents in only one home. Another type is the
Page 8 of 31

Conjugal Family in which the father and mother are not married and have children. The Nuclear
Family followed which consisted only of parents and its children.

Broken Family is the non-integration of Mom and Dad into a home to support their children
and not guide their children. With the family united, it is also inevitable that it will disintegrate.
This is probably the reason why there is a broken family or a broken home, where the mother and
father do not live together in the same home to support their children. According to Campbell
1932, a broken home is defined as any home where one or both parents do not live with the children
in a normal family relationship. Separation may be due to death, divorce, desertion, or any other
cause. If an abnormal home is a permanent impact on children, the ability to do his school work,
it can be seen when the success of children coming from a normal family.

According to Mc Linn 1985, awakening to a separate or broken family also has negative
effects on children. Scientists say that children raised by single parents are more likely to have
problems than children raised by both parents.

School, is one of the ways to achieve success in life, but because there is a problem facing
young people, it is difficult to focus on learning. According to Barbara Huberman (RN, MEd,
Former Director of Education and Outreach Updated 2016) ages 13-17 are the best age to conduct
research at these ages forming a child’s personality to know how he overcome the problems he
faces.

Objectives of the Study

The researchers should be able to know the factors affecting of broken homes to the
academic performance of students.

1. To find out the factors affecting of broken homes to a student who belong to it.
2. To know the factors affecting of broken homes to the behavior of Senior High School
student in Binuay National High School.
3. To discuss the effect of broken homes to the social status of Senior High School student of
Binuay National High School.
4. To determine the extent to which broken homes system affect students’ academic
performance.
5. To find out whether the learner feel loved the family.

Research Gap

This study aims to determine the case study between the factors affecting of broken homes
to the academic performance of students. The information used is derived or based only on the
results of the respondents and the relevant literature. We want to get their opinion or answer of the
respondents who will be the bridge to develop and carry out the research

It also aims to answer the following questions

• Problems about the impact of family breakdown on youth

• What is the common cause of family breakdown?

• Does it affect young people's learning?

• What are the impact of family breakdown on students?

• What are some of the ways in which the above students overcame the impact of family
disintegration?

In out society, children are sometimes exposed at an early age to all sort of dangers arising
from malnutrition, diseases, and various temptation of surviving due to absence of one both of
their parents. Students life in broken homes is observed to be associated with emotional stress that
can impair intellectual development, thereby giving way for such children to grow up without
being trained properly. However, absence of one or both parents deprives young children of the
stable love, care, security and total support they have been accustomed to and tend to make children
different in the eyes of the peer groups. If children are asked where the missing parent is or why
the have a new parent to replace the missing parents, they become embarrassed and ashamed. They
may also feel guilty and intellectual imbalance in my growing children. These subsequently results
to quitting from school poor academic performance of secondary schools students as education
require critical thinking, relax mind and proper family support to be able to expectation in the
school.

Hypothesis

The hypothesis was tested at 0.05 level of significance.

Ho1. There is significant impact of broken homes to the academic performance of students.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study was focused on The Factors Affecting of Broken Homes to the Academic
Performance of Students.

The researchers chose to conduct the study at Binuay, Dimataling, Zamboanga del Sur.
Studied at Binuay National High School in three (3) reasons: (1) the accessibility of the location,
(2) the numbers of students who are belong to broken homes, and (3) the researchers' limited
resources.

The respondents were limited to Senior High School and were composed of three hundred
twenty-seven (327) students from different department. The researchers choose one (1) belong to
broken homes. The researchers wanted to disclose the data they gathered and outcomes in this
study. They also want this study to pass on knowledge to future generations and be an inspiration
for the hardships that a person who is suitable to go through in a broken home will go through.

Research Environment and Timeline. The study was conducted at Binuay, Dimataling, Zamboanga
del Sur. Studied at Binuay National High School on the year 2021-2022.

Significance of the study

The result of the study is the great factor for the academic institutions and teachers in
planning and providing strategies to help the broken homes to the academic performance of
students which will results to the institutions high promotion of outstanding.

In addition, this study is undertaken to elicit information and finding that is proved useful to the
following:

Students. These were the subject of the study, the selected Binuay, Dimataling, Zamboanga del
Sure. Studies at Binuay National High School for the strategies how the learner deal with the
Page 12 of 31

impact of broken homes and how learner can overcome the situations. The learner have a big role
to play in this matter and it is more appropriate for them to give and express their thoughts on it.

Parents. The result of the study helped parents to be guided properly, not only to facilitate the
pursuit of education of their children, but also to guide and nurture their children by providing a
peaceful and happy family. But in separation, each side of the parent ought to be responsible for
guiding and counseling their children in such situations.

Teachers. The result of the study would greatly aid educators in cultivating the young minds, the
power of learning, wisdom and knowledge. It will help educators to discover things beyond the
problems faced by a learner who comes from a broken home have a profound effect on their
character. Reflecting upon themselves as educators the real essence of their profession and their
work ethics. Ultimately, forging the path to a better society through the future leaders of the
country.

Researchers. The findings of this study helped the writers to know and how to solved the impact
of broken homes to the academic performance of students.

in our collecting information. The researchers first thing does was to (I) determined who’s students
with special needs and a kind of special education she need. (II) Constructing the case study title.
(III) Asking permission with the legal guardian of the subject; and (IV) Conducting the interview.

CHAPTER III

RESULTS, ANALYSIS, AND DISCUSSION

This chapter present the research findings of the data collected. The findings were
presented in relation to research objectives stated in the study. The method use to analyze is
already discussed in the methodology chapter.

Description of the Subject

The home is a first contact of a child in life hence it is a place where comfort, love,
tranquility and refuge are expected to be adequately and unconditionally provided, it is also a place
Page 17 of 31

where people congregate their living practices. Home is a primary agent of socialization and
internalization, a child’s social outlooks, educational agilities and achievement coupled with her
intelligence is a reflection of her home setting and which usually associated with her family
background in totality. As a result of these, home is any child’s environment of which the child
can not do without referring to act one time of the other as regards to certain issues. Therefore
home is determining factor in any child’s behavior and this influence her academic performance.
The home consist of the children’s vicinity and apartment where she rest her head. It is abundantly
clear that a successful learning and reading requires a conducive and decent atmosphere.

A broken home is a home where the children are left to their own idea, belief and traits due
to lack of care, affection and control by their parents. Must children from broken homes are
characterized by laziness, low intelligence quotient, bad and anti-social behavior, once there is
separation, the child will not be opportunity to settle down for a peaceful life with own parent or
the others.

A critical examination of a child whose parents are separate and being trained either by her
step father or mother a relative or guidance may be subjected to unpleasant environment that could
alter her normal disposition trite that could foster and facilitate normal expectations of her
academic performance. There is great prosperity for a child from broken home to mingle and
associate with miscreant due to her explosive street hawking by the guidance.

Description of the Case/Learning Needs

Growing up in a broken home can be a difficult experience, especially if you're forced to at

a young age. Those that have grown up in a broken home understand the difficulties and everyday
challenges that you have faced in the past. Although toxic environments aren't easy to be around,
there are also important lessons to be learned from them. Here are the ten lessons/needs from
growing up in a broken home.

1. Vulnerability

When you come from a broken home, you can understand the vulnerability in which you saw
weakness in your family that you never wanted to see in the first place. From the constant fighting,
screaming, and door slamming, you've witnessed broken hearts from a young age. It's almost like
you were forced to grow up and be the strong one in the family and you were there so much for
others that you were never there for yourself.

2. "Home"

People that have grown up in a broken home understand the feeling of never wanting to go home.
We find the comfort of home in other places, so we try our hardest to stall going home as much as
possible. Running away is the closest thing to us that feels like home.

3. Compassion

If anyone knows pain, it's us. We know what it's like to hurt so when we come across others that
are hurting, we do our best to be there for them. We show the empathetic side of ourselves because
when we were at home hurting, we wanted the people that weren't for us which makes us give out
the things that we've always wanted, but weren't able to have.

4. Love

When you grow up in a broken home, you can understand the feeling of wanting to be loved. It's
something that you will always want in life because it's something that you didn't have growing
up. You tend to have a big heart for people, and continuously wish that you could have the same
love in return. Even if you don't receive the same love from others, you still go out of your way to
give because you understand what it feels like to not feel real love, and you don't want anyone else
to ever have to feel the same.

5. Emotions

Many people will unintentionally bottle up their emotions. We tend to guard our emotions, simply
because of the fear that we have. We fear that the emotions that we have, will be used against us
later on, which leads us to remain quiet about how we truly feel. We have a difficult time
expressing our emotions because anytime that we have, it has been at the wrong times.

6. People

When you grow up in a toxic environment, you are already aware of the different traits of a toxic
person. This is why we have the ability to differentiate those who are a threat to our lives and those
who are not. It is also why we distance ourselves from other people because we have already gone
through intense chaos at home, and don't want to relive the pain.

7. Overprotection

Some of us have had to protect our siblings, or even our own parent's from physical and emotional
pain. If you had to act as a protector at a young age, of course, you will carry the same trait with
you as you get older. It is completely normal and the reason behind it is because we sense that we
NEED to act as the protector to those that mean the most to us.

8. Bullies

We become our own bullies because it felt like anything that we did, wasn't good enough for
anyone. It always feels like there is something wrong with us. It becomes so persistent that over
time, we begin to become our own self-critic. We become self-aware because others won't.

9. Tension

When you grow up in a toxic home, you begin to resent the tension. Tension for us is almost like
a ticking time bomb and we do everything we can to try to avoid it. We would rather communicate
and try to resolve problems before they manifest. That is why you will find yourself wanting to
run out the door when you are in an argument with someone and is your first instant reaction.

10. Success

As we get older, life assures us that things will get better and that we as humans matter. We have
this inner desire of wanting to succeed in life because we want to have a better future rather than
dwelling on the past. We want to succeed so that one day we can have a family of our very own
and give them the life we never had as children.

Subject’ Education (Heart of the Study)

This study showed teachers were firstly concerned with children’s social and emotional well-being.
They believed when children felt safe and secure they could learn. Importantly, the support teachers in our
study provided varied depending on the different needs of children and their families, as it should.

Useful and effective actions teachers in our study took included:

• Developing an understanding of children’s reactions to their parents and divorce by

reflecting on their observations and conversations with children

• Developing an understanding of the type and effect of parents’ stress

• Having private conversations with children, asking if they are OK, being a good listener,
letting children talk, and providing reassurance

• Arranging one-on-one time with a teacher aide to provide emotional support or to help
them settle into the day

• Being available for children and parents to speak to

• Creating a safe, friendly environment where children feel free to talk

• Developing friendships with children and families so they can feel safe and secure to talk
to them

• Communicating with parents about how their child is going emotionally, socially and
academically at school

• Referring children to the student welfare coordinator when necessary for additional support

• Talking about catastrophic scales to help children put their problems into perspective on a
scale from zero to ten where zero is no problem and ten is the worst problem ever

• Being consistent with school routines, rules and expectations

• Making sure the child is included in supportive friendship groups, both in the classroom
and playground

• Making activities and communication inclusive – for example, not always saying “tell
mum” but instead saying “tell the person who packs your lunch” or “does your homework
with you”

• Having flexible expectations with the child’s school work

• Arranging tutoring for the child with the teacher, other parents, peers, and teacher aides

• Getting financial support through the school welfare budget or community organizations
for resources, food and to help pay for school excursions and camps

• Providing encouragement for children to make good decisions and to manage their own
behaviour.

Teachers can buffer the stress of separation and help children adjust to their changed family
arrangement. The strategies for teachers identified in this study can help teachers support children
and families through these unsettled times.

The actions teachers take are important in increasing the bonding between children, families
and teachers. Teachers must consider the uniqueness of children and their family situation as they
promote resilience and coping skills, encourage a realistic and positive outlook, and decide which
of these strategies to use.

Parent

For many children, their parents’ separation and divorce is a stressful time. Children have
different experiences and reactions and bring these into their classrooms.
Children’s social and emotional well-being, and learning can be affected for many years. At this
time, it may be difficult for parents to provide the support their children need as they deal with
their own stress. The love of the parent, really unparalleled In caring and caring for her chick It
seems like a hen if she folds and rests If she hugs them like birds there they will lie down. Children
begin by loving their parents. But it is not right to say that I am tired of being a parent in front of
your children. It is a huge problem to get divorced and who is miserable, not the children. So think
carefully about whether it is right to divorce.

There are many students today who do not have a whole family or live with aunts/uncles.
Their learning is so affected that they can never focus on the studied. Sometimes unable to
understand instructions and sometimes weak in class. Parents have a big obligation to their children
but why is the family still divided. Where aunts/uncles support and make way for children not to
always be sad.

Students with broken homes need to be guided and educated properly for the good path of
life. Even separated parents are able to achieve dreams. It is not easy to give up and struggle with
life's challenges.

Teacher

Teachers and schools can help children make positive adjustments. Teachers see these children the
most each day apart from their parents. They’re in an ideal position to provide support when needed. But
they may not know how to help in these situations. Our study provides some helpful strategies that have
proven to be successful for teachers. School is said to be the second home, teachers are the second
parent and classmates are the siblings. At school I gradually became aware of many things about
myself. The school is the first to come up with the information needed. And, many people believe
that teachers have an easy job in part because they have summers off and many days off for certain
holidays. The reality is that teachers spend almost as much time working when students are gone
as they do when students are in class. Teaching is more than a 7-4 job. Good teachers stay in school
late at night, continue to work when they get home, and spend time on the weekends preparing for
the coming week. Teachers often do amazing things beyond the classroom if no one is looking.

Teaching is not a static job where you leave everything at the door and return it the next
morning. Instead, instruction follows you wherever you go. It is a continuous mindset and state of
mind that is rarely turned off. Teachers are always thinking about their students. Especially those
who have different classes of students. There are those in broken homes who do everything to be
educated and right. There are times when broken homes students find it difficult to follow the
teacher’s instructions. But a teacher use their strategies to easily catch-up with students.

Therefore, it is no joke to be a teacher to a student from a separate parent. It takes guidance,

understanding, love, and patience to teach properly. There are times when it really becomes
Page 23 of 31

talkative and sometimes doesn’t focus too much on discussions. It is also unavoidable to complain
whenever activities coincide. Because, every teacher understands them and pays attention to
problems within the school that are somehow related to some problem in our society. Helping them
learn and grow consumes teachers. This is why teachers lose sleep sometimes, emphasizing them
to others, yet giving them joy constantly. The teachers who actually do are not fully understood
by those outside the profession. No matter what happens they are the second parent to the students
in the school.

Conclusion

Broken homes contains a complex mixture of societal and individual causes. Students that
belongs to broken homes might feel uncomfortable to their way of living. They feel that living in
this kind of status in life might be useless, meaningless or worthless. It is really important that a
child needs proper food, clothing and shelter. It is the role of the parents to give proper education
and proper living to their children in order to make them valuable in this material world. But, we
cannot deny the fact that we have our brother and sisters who belongs to this broken homes or
broken families. Through this broken homes, might affect to the education of a child. There is no
proper living, proper assistance and comfort wherein a child needs this. They really need moral
and financial support in everyday living. And because of this, it really affects to their studies.
Affects to their learning studies. They cannot learn well because their stomach might empty. They
always think of the agony of their life. That is why some students don’t finish their education
because of the poverty that they were facing. They cannot survive. As a result, they will go into
early marriage which is not good to hear.

As a teacher, we should have to know each our students for us to make any interventions
regarding their situation. Let us know the individual background so that we can assess them
wherein they need to be assisted. We will go directly to the point to judge them. Instead, let us
help them, love and care them.

Recommendations

The following recommendation were made based on the findings and conclusions of the
study. The researchers recommend that:

1. The government should create academic and counseling units in schools with adequate
found & while students from broken homes should be given proper guidance and
counseling concerning their psychological needs and social problems towards their studies
for appropriate discipline.
2. More learning materials should be provided to the students from broken homes by their
parents and guidance for effective learning.
3. Proper monitoring& security and discipline should be given to the students by their
guidance and single parents.
4. Government should found or create sufficient orphanage homes and finance them so that
they will take care of broken homes.
5. Religious scholars should offer to parents on dangers of broken homes and their effect on
academic performance.
