CHAPTER I

Introduction

Background of the Study

Teaching is a process that involves bringing about desirable changes in learners

so as to achieve specific outcomes Ayeni, (2011). Effective teaching is important because

teaching is based on helping children progress from one level to another in a more

sociable interactive environment and to set the approach right to get student to be

independent learner- (Muijus and Reynolds, 2005).

The most basic definition of an independent learner is a student that has the

“ability to take charge of one’s learning” (Holec, 1981). Previous studies have indicated

that when teachers are effective classroom managers, their students achieve at a higher

level (Freiberg et al. 1995; Ometso and Samudara 2011; Stronge et al. 2011; Stronge et

al. 2008) and display more interest in the class subject matter (Kunter et al, 2007).

Traditional teaching is concerned with the teacher being the controller of learning

environment. Power and responsibilities are held by the teacher and they play the role of

instructor (in the form of lectures) and decision-maker (in the regards to curriculum

content and specific outcomes). They regard students as having ‘knowledge holes’ that

need to be filled with information (Novak, 1998).

In short, the traditional teacher views that it is the teacher causes learning to occur

(Novak, 1998). This method is used hundreds of years and considered as old-fashioned

way of teaching. The former education curriculum in the Philippines use this method. In

the recent, we have K-12 curriculum that implemented in the school year 2012-2013.

Where contemporary teaching is a modern way where teaching is more interacting and
student-based. The modern teaching method is effective learners learns through sociable

interactive environment and become an independent learner (Muijus and Reynolds,

2005).

Modern learners or what we called "generation Z" are into technology. Teachers

should cope-up a method that suits to the learners. Education is evolving due to the

impact of the Internet. We cannot teach our students in the same manner in which we are

taught. "Change is necessary to engage students not in the curriculum we are responsible

for teaching." (April Chamberlain).

We shouldn't push our modern learners of what teachers used to at their

generation. Technological advancement has a great help in our daily living, specifically in

the field of education, where acquiring information will be shown by the presentations,

images and even demonstration are one click away.

Based on Jackson (2012), "The traditional "chalk and talk" method of teaching that's

persisted for hundreds of years is now acquiring inferior results when compared with the

more modern and revolutionary teaching methods that are available for use in schools

today. Greater students is encouraged, the boundaries of authority are being broken

down, and a focus on enjoyment over grades is emphasized".

The researchers observed that six (6) out of ten (10) teachers uses modern

methods in teaching due the unavailability of learning equipment in the school. Lesser

interaction and some teachers discriminate the ability of the modern learners because

they think that learner depends on technological advancements. Must construct a concert

relationship between the teachers and learners to have an effective teaching.

Thus, the study aimed to determine the attitudes of the students’ perception on

their behavior of two teaching methods used in relation to their academic performance.
Research Objectives

The purpose of this study is to determine the attitudes of the students’ perception on

their behavior of two teaching methods used by teachers among the JHS and SHS

students. This study will be conducted in Divisoria National High School for the school

year 2019-2020.

Specifically, the study attempts to answer the following questions:

1. What are the students’ perception towards

1.1. Traditional teaching; and,

1.2. Contemporary teaching?

2. Is there a significant difference on the perception of the students between

traditional and contemporary teaching to their academic performance?

3. What intervention can be made relevant to the student's preference on the

two teaching method used?

Null Hypothesis

Ho1: There is no significant relationship between traditional and contemporary

teaching to the academic performance of the students.

Ho2: There is no significant relationship between the style of teaching to the

academic rating of the students.

Theoretical Framework

According to Trowbridge and Bybee (1996), the assumption

underlying teaching style is that it is the most effective and efficient
means of presenting the material as long as the style is
appropriate for the subject and the students.

Traditional Teaching

Based on Jackson Contemporary Teaching

Appropriate teaching method must be used by teacher for better learning of

students. Bringing out the best of learners through the right teaching method can help

improve the holistic development. Learning theories were used in this study as the

theoretical framework to explaining how students learn towards the two teaching methods.

Scope and Limitations

The study will focus on the perception of students’ behavior in Divisoria National

High School. This covers within the percentage point that further evaluate and intervene

that perception of students towards the teaching method, and relationship between

contemporary teaching and traditional teaching method to their academic performance.

Follow the given format.

Significance of the Study

This study aimed to provide information on the perception of the students towards the

two teaching methods used in teaching in Divisoria National High School, Divisoria,

Bontoc, Southern Leyte. It can benefits for the following:

Students: The students can be benefited in a way that they are able to engage in an

interactive education. In which they can learn more in a teaching methods that they into, it

also raise their performance if they can relate in the teaching method.

Teachers: The teachers can benefit in a way that teaching will be easier when the

students love their way of teaching. They can also be benefited in a way that it can lessen

the stress they can get.

Parents: The parents can be benefited in a way that their children bring the

knowledge in their home and it can help in their everyday living.

School: The schools will benefit if the academic performance of the student gets

higher and directly proportional to the funds that they can get from the government,

especially for the buildings and improvement of schools. And also they will get more

enrollees.

Government: The government can benefit in a way that their mission and vision for

the every Filipino learners are accomplish.

Operational Definition of Terms

For the purpose of clarification and to establish a common frame of reference of the

study. The following terms are defined operationally as they are used in the study.

Contemporary Teaching- is a teaching method that is use by modern teachers, it

involves using of gadgets and technology in teaching, especially projector and internet

access.

Traditional Teaching- also known as "chalk and talk". A teaching method that is use

hundreds of years, it involves a visual aids such as Manila paper and using chalk as a

medium on writing.

Academic Performance- is level of learning by the students, it is also a basis of how

students improve in school academically.

Effective teaching- a teaching style which students prefer into, where the students

have more interaction and more knowledge is absorbed.

Chapter II

Review of Related Literature and Study

This chapter discusses the different studies about the effect of two teaching methods

(traditional and contemporary teaching) to the academic performance especially on the

research locale of the study.

Related Literature

In traditional methods of teaching, the teacher plays the important role instructional

process. Through this process of teaching, materials are used to present facts and

information, and the teacher's teaching style is formal and impersonal (Wang, 2007).

There are several methods of traditional teaching. Lecture, whole group discussion,

and drill and practice. These three methods employ advantages and disadvantages.

Lecture is a traditional teaching method that is often used in schools. Held and

Mckimm (2009) defined lecture as a style of teaching used to transfer new knowledge and

skills to promote and stimulate further learning. The students are expected to take down

notes while listening and very little, exchange occurs between the teacher and students

during the lecture (Kelly, 2012).

The disadvantages of this method according to Kelly (2012); 1. Instructor have

greater control over what is taught because they are the sole source of information in the

classroom. 2. Student is weak in note taking will having trouble understanding what they

should remember from the lecture. 3. Student often fined the lectures boring and easily

lose interest. 4. Teacher may not get a feel for how much students understand because

there is not much opportunity for exchange during the lecture. Drill and practice refers to
the structured, repetitive review of previously learned concepts to master a specified

learning objectives (Tomei, 1998).

Lecturing is an effective traditional teaching method for teachers who lecture well and

for students who are audio learners. Teachers also find the traditional methods of

teaching, especially lecture, and benefit students who are passive learners. Teachers also

perceive class discussion as another important traditional teaching strategy. Skilled

discussion leaders are excellent at motivating students to take an active role in

researching a particular topic or issue for discussion (Goldstein and Benassi, 2006).

One advantage of drill and practice is it provides mastery of basic skills for students.

According to Lewis (2007), teaching students through various methods such as flashcards

or repetitive can help them use these skills in different environment. The disadvantage of

drill and practice include students who find it difficult to focus when doing this type of

activity too often and students who have may trouble in learning.

When students are drilled too often, they find the teaching method boring and

become distracted easily according to Barden stein (2012). Lewis also stated that just

memorizing and not mastering the material can cause problems later when trying to

accomplish more complex tasks.

Technology is integrating as our education. Technology can often serve as a

motivator of learning. Stratham and Torell (2010) stated that computer technology

stimulates increased student interaction and encourage cooperative learning,

collaboration, problem solving, and students inquiries. "In classroom where technology is

a part of the curriculum, students are more likely to initiate learning-based activities,

sometimes even directing them" Apple Computer Inc., 2002).

Research states that one important contribution that technology makes is how it

affects student's attitude toward learning. It is believed by the expert that the reasoning for

this is that computers provide an individual curriculum that is customized to the learners

academic needs (Apple Corporation, Inc., 2002). In this environment, at risk students do

not feel threatened and are motivated to perform rep itious tasks.

Related Study

According to the thesis report of Sharmin Sultana (2006), only 44.7 ℅ learners think

that multimedia is more practical and easy to get attention of the learner, with 39℅ of

students believe blackboard is more convenient. Using technologies as a visual aids have

more percentage than using blackboard in medium on teaching. It is more convenient to

use multimedia on disseminating information.

The researcher of this related study followed a quantitative pattern to collect the

concrete answer of the participants. It uses a question format which is multiple choice

question (MCQ) and it is forty-eight in numbers. The questions are divided into two

sections where each section contains twenty-four questions based in multimedia and

blackboard.

In her thesis, there are 90 students in four reputed universities in Dhaka City who

participated in her study. The data collection process is completely done with the help of

Google documents, the researcher send outs the link for the survey question to the

selected participants to click on the answer. Answer is automatically count while the

participants click their answer.

Google documents tally the percentage of the each answer and converted into a pie

chart. The study has given a concrete details, which has a student way of collecting data,

and has successfully completed the objectives of research.

Similarities and Differences of the Studies

Therefore, the literature tells about the different teaching method that is often used

in schools. The literature highlights the traditional teaching as process of teaching that

materials are used to present facts and information, and the teacher’s teaching style is

formal and impersonal.

In contemporary teaching as the technology integrated education, Stratham and

Torell (2010) stated that computer technology stimulates increased student interaction

and encourage cooperative learning, collaboration, problem solving, and students’

inquiries.

Therefore, the scope of the study is smaller than the researches above. But have

the same goal was to discover students’ perception on which are easier to catch students’

attention that affect the student’s scholastic performance.

Chapter III

Research Methodology and Procedures

The purpose of this study is to investigate the student's scholastic performance

towards contemporary and traditional teaching methods used by the JHS and SHS

teachers. In this chapter, methods and sampling technique are presented. The

environment/locale of the study and participants, research instrument, data gathering

procedure, and data analysis are determined.

Research Design

This study employs a descriptive-survey research design. This study considers the

entities of student's performance in teaching traditional and contemporary method.

Further discuss your research. Why you choose this design.

Research Respondents

The researchers' respondents are grade 7-12 students in Divisoria National High

School. The researchers select 10 students randomly per grade level. The researchers

chose the students with an academic excellence. Discuss why you choose them as your

respondents.

Research Environment

The school is 300 meters away from Divisoria, Bontoc, Southern Leyte. It covers

an area of 10, 882 square meters. It has 10 classrooms, an outdoor stage, a computer

science laboratories, a library, an administration, and HE building. Researchers will collect

data by identifying populations and surveys using questioners. Researchers seek

information on students’ perceptions on the two teaching methods used by the teachers in

Divisoria National High S.Y. 2019-2020.

Research Instrument

In this study, the researchers used survey questionnaire to gather data. Researchers

seek information on students

Data Gathering Technique/ Procedure

Dry run procedures- The researchers constructed first the questionnaire and send a

letter of requests to the principal for the approval of gathering the data. Target

respondents were also sent with letter asking their permission to participate in the

research. The researchers edited the questionnaires before distributing. After the principal

gave approval, ach year level had an assigned member to distribute the questionnaires.

The respondents were asked to answer the questionnaire in their ample time with all

honesty. The researchers explained to them that any information given by them will be

kept confidential.

Data collection- To gather data for this research, After they have completed the

questionnaires in the given time, the researchers then retrieved the said questionnaires.

Sampling Procedure

This study aimed to determine the behavior of the students’ perception on their

behavior of two teaching methods used by teachers among the JHS and SHS students.

This study will be conducted in Divisoria National High School for the school year 2019-

2020.

Specifically, the study attempts to answer the following questions:

1. What are the students’ perception towards;

1.1. Traditional teaching; and,

1.2. Contemporary teaching?

2. Is there a significant difference on the perception of the students between

traditional and contemporary teaching to their academic performance?

3. What intervention can be made relevant to the student's preference on the

two teaching method used?

Thus, the method that is used in choosing the respondents is the simple-random

sampling method. The questionnaires were given during RRE time of the students. This a

probability sampling, considering that this a quantitative research and since the population

of the respondents are large in scale, the researchers of the study also consider about

their teaching method that the respondents used.

Data Analysis

The researchers conducted a study through survey. The respondents answer was

analyzed through comparing their given answer.

The researchers employed analytical statistics to analyze the correlation of two

variables being compared in the survey. It also uses analytical statistics to find the

frequency, mean and percentage. On the other hand, Pearson Product Moment

Correlation Coefficient was utilized to analyze the relationship that exists between

student’s perception in traditional and contemporary teaching.

Ethical Considerations
The researchers will have a designated member in each level. Then the assigned

member submitted a letter of permissions in giving the questionnaires to those students

who are currently enrolled in Divisoria National High School from grade 7 to grade 12

level. At first, the researcher greets the respondent “good morning”. Then,
