1.0 Introduction

Communication is important for this Is the key of interacting and transferring ideas to
one person to another. Yet according to Adam Augustyn, Patricia Bauer and Brian
Duignan (2019) there are still people who wants to spend their time with themselves, a
person whose interest is generally directed inward toward his own feelings and thoughts,
in contrast to an extravert, whose attention is directed toward other people and the outside
world. Introverts is reserved and tends to have difficulty adjusting to social situations.

In the Philippines, we live where extroverts run across fields while introverts are the
underdogs (Arans, 2017). According to Ong (2013), here in our country, being an
introvert is not an easy task as they've been underrepresented and often misunderstood by
an extroverted-dominated world. In addition, part of the Filipino culture is being in
group, if you are seen alone, other Filipino assumes that you don’t have friends or worse
that nobody likes you.

In La Consolacion College Caloocan, Caloocan City, Philippines one of our

member finds out that some students who prefer to be spend their time to themselves and
study alone are the students who have introversion. Also, misconceptions and
misunderstanding them gave them a much harder situation. Thus, an action research is
necessary to address this issue

According to Norm Schriever, Filipinos are very social and spending much time with
their family and friends maybe it's in our blood to communicate with other people who
surround us. Also, interaction is very important for it is the way we exercise our influence
on others, bring out changes in our and others' attitudes, motivate the people around us
and establish and maintain relationships with them. But as defined by Kimberly Holland,
some people choose not to communicate and prefer to be alone and calm and they are
called introvert or characterized by introversion. What do people first think when they
hear the word introvert and does the description of an introvert can be accurate? Is there
any misconception about it and how does being introvert can affect one's social life?
To begin the study, the researchers finds out the synonyms of the word introvert
in able to understand more the word introvert. The following words appeared: shy,
schizoid, nervousness, wariness and highly sensitive. These words are the classification
of the word introvert which suggest to be undesirable than to its counterpart extrovert and
unsatisfactory view of introversion.

But in accordance of the study of Paula Jean Remus (2005), there's a misuse of the
words shy (socially anxious around people), schizoid (fear involvement between people).
In exception of the word highly sensitive which seems somehow can be possessed by an
introvert.

According to Kendra Cherry (2019) being an introvert doesn’t mean being shy or
socially anxious. The same as what Paula Jean Remus stated. Shyness indicates to have a
fear to socialize or interact to people, on the other hand, introvert prefer to be alone and
do not like to spend a lot of time interacting with other people. Also she stated that,
introverts are estimated to build up to 25 to 45 percent of the population which is a
massive number.

Because of this huge number of introverts we need to understand and know the essence
of introversion. In order to fulfill the misconceptions and misunderstood of introversion,
the eleventh grade students of La Consolacion College Caloocan made a research. Rather
than that, we also want to know how introversion can affect ones social life. In this study
we will establish an interview for the introverts of Grade 11 students of La Consolacion
College Caloocan to gain more information.

1.1 Research Objectives

The purpose of this study is to examine what are the effects of introversion in
social life especially nowadays, students used to communicate in order to gain and
exchange information especially in group discussions. The researchers conducted this
study to know, understand and enlighten the mind of people about the situation of the
introverts.
1.2 Research Questions

*What are the effects of being introverts in their social life?

*How do people perceive the life of an introvert?
* What are the misconceptions that people envision about being introvert?

1.3 Significance of the study

The purpose of the study is to investigate and provide the community about the greater
insight of introversion. This study will also update the misconceptions about introversion
and its effects of ones social life. Research conducted by other will be included and
examined.
Specifically, this study aims the following:
Students. To re-educate their understandings and misrepresentations about introversion
as well as paying attentions to the introverts rather than the extroverts.

Teachers. To inform and to make actions to take attentions to their students who have
introversion.

Parents. To inform the parents about the situation that their children facing and to make
actions to approach them.

Future Researchers. To give an example research and to become a guide for them to
continue the study.
Research Team. To explore and study the said phenomena as well as gaining more
information that could be share and spread to the public.
Academic Community. To give greater understanding about the insight of introversion
and prevent misconceptions about the phenomena.
Guidance Councilor. To give them an idea that students who have introversion also
need attentions and advices about their situation.
1.4 Scope and Limitations

This study focused on the people involved with introversion and how this can affect
their social life and how people misunderstood their situation. In order to accomplish the
study, the researchers will interview the selected students in each classrooms and asking
if there's an introverts in their room. Each identified introverts will be the subject of the
study. The researchers are not bound to the past experiences of the subjects which leads
them to have introversion. Each introverts will be interviewed which were be taken
within a week. The students who will undergo the studies are the students from the La
Consolacion College Caloocan during the school year 2019-2020.

1.5 Definition of Terms

Introvert- an introvert is often thought of as a quiet, reflective and reserved person. We

don't try special attention or social engagements, as these things will overwhelm and
drain introverts (Legg, 2018)

Extrovert- as defined by Timothy Legg, extroverts are often the extroverts are described
as party life. Their outgoing, vibrant nature attracts people to them and they are having a
hard time turning the attention away. They are thriving off the interaction.
Anti-social- according to the Cambridge Dictionary, they are harmful to society:
Antisocial also means not wanting to spend time with others or being friendly
Character Preferences- as defined by Pierodusa, it is the type of thinking and conduct
of a character that prefers those acts over others. For every actor it is a unique and
personal system in which the artists build the character's foundation.

Asocial- as defined by Cambridge Dictionary, asocial is someone who isn’t interested in

forming social groups or connections with others.
Shyness- according to Health Line, shyness is a feeling of fear or discomfort when being
around other people, especially in new situations or among strangers.

Self-identify- according to Lexico, self-identify is being assigned to a particular

characteristic or categorization to oneself; describe oneself as belonging to a particular
category or group.

Interaction- as defined by Macmillian Dictionary, interaction is the activity of being

with and talking to other people, and the way that people react to each other.

Isolate- to separate something from other things, or to keep something separate as

defined by Cambridge Dictionary.

Parasympathetic- sometimes called the rest and digest system, the parasympathetic
system conserves energy as it slows the heart rate, increases intestinal and gland activity,
and relaxes sphincter muscles in the gastrointestinal tract.

Socialize- as defined by Your Dictionary, socialize is to make social; adjust to or make fit
for cooperative group living or to adapt or make conform to the common needs of a
social group.

2.0 Theoretical Background

According to Heather Rollins, by how much people talk we can determine if one
person is either an extrovert or an introvert. However, this information is not necessarily
true. Instead, it is more based on what situations give a person energy. Introverts receives
a common misconception and that is being shy because of the energy drainage from
being in too many social situations at a time and regaining it by spending time alone. As
Psychology Today said, introverts are very tuned in to their own thoughts and known for
being smart.

2.2 Review of Related Literature

Foreign

According to Remus, she stated that introvertion have many misconceptions that
led into the misunderstanding their situations by extroverted sociey. She stated that
introversion was conceptualized as their interest is toward their own attentions and not to
other people. Unlike extroverts, their attentions were toward the other poeple rather than
themselves. They tend to give attentions to themselves rather than the other people. They
much enjoy activities relatively unstimulatin nature, for instance is reading. Meaning to
say, introversion were not describe as shy or anti-social. Having time to themselves and
having no time to socialize to others were likely to be more accurate response. The study
implied hermeneutic phenomenological approach to explore the behaviour and lived
experience of self-identified introverts. Five self-indentified introverts were interviewed
to understand how the self concept of introverts alhas been influenced by the extroverted
society in which the interview were thematically analyzed. Challenges assiociated with
being an introvert essentially involved social realms, that is education or work systems
and general relationships with others.

To conclude, the essential experience of the introvert's existence is not based on

one reality, but rather the participants' narratives suggest multiple realities that are
constructed. To understand the lived experience of introverts, one must take into
consideration the effects of cumulative experiences. Participants were able to clearly
describe the characteristics of their introverted selves that they're holding. Each
participant voiced their overall contentment with their introverted selves and
characteristics and how living as anything other would be incongruent to their true selves.
The deep connection of being introverted. However, was a long and personal journey
only recently recognized.
10
In the article of Wever, he stated that introverted students has been isolated and
pay less attentions comparing to the extroverted one who gain a lot of attentions. This
case leads to understanding less of being introvert and also leads to lacking of knowledge
about their situations. She conducted a study, which she founds out what are the things
that makes an introvert become more comfortable. The final outcomes were observed
from the answers administred from the students. From the control group, three students
mentioned their desk as the most comfortable place for them in the classroom, with one
mentioning “reading class” and another recess. The activities answered as least desirable
included “Hallway walking to pullout,” “Hallway waiting to open the door,” and “Class
time when someone is teaching and students are listening,” them as non-enjoyable. From
the experimental group, two students mentioned the “back of the room,” where thequiet
corner privacy folders had been set up, as the most comfortable place for them in the
classroom. One of these students especially mentioned the “test folders.” Another said
that “away from everyone” was the most comfortable place, and the final stated that
his/her chair was the most comfortable place. The interview answered as least desirable
included “Hallway waiting for someone to open the door,” followed by “Class time
working in a group,” “Music class,” PE,” “Dismissal,” “Indoor recess,” and “Hallway
walking to pullout,”
According to the study of Dow, stated that her study focuses on introverts and
extroverts and how that can affect their performances in school as well as interaction to
the world. Extroverts are usually the center of attention for their being talkative and their
constant movement. Yet, there are still people who still want to stay alone and finished
their tasks by themselves who prefer not to work in group but tend to work alone with
one other person in which leads to a fewer friends. Introverted students and educators,
meanwhile, will quietly and diligently work on lessons, react more slowly to changes,
and produce well-researched, thoughtful, and rich projects that may not be noticed. They
will not be remembered in the same fashion because the society as a whole grants those
that are forceful, brash, and loud with more worth. Being introvert can affect their social
life since they tend to minimize their surroundings, productivity and interacting to other
people. In other words, introverted people mostly got the least attentions from other
people and also it has an affects to themselves, either to their academic performance or
social life. There are ways that may students and educators may do to make small
changes in the way they're thinking and interacting with others that can help eliminate the
belief that introverted ia negative and extroverted is positive. Community-mindedness is
especially important in this regard but this changes must happen thoughtfully. People
always praise students with great interaction or being an extrovert, yet we forgot
somewhere aling the line that there are also stilllearning and need some form of
encourgement. For this reason, an educator should praise students often in a high school
bur students can also take small steps for themselves.
According to the study of Al Harbi, they are many factors can affect an
individual's education and being an introvert is considered as one of these factors .Also
stated that some student enjoys working in groups, however, introverts working in a
group discussions is such a big problem for them to share their thoughts and ideas. This
difference is related to personality preferences since participation in a group work
considered as an academic advantage. They aims to find if there's any relation between
introversion and educational attainment. Data collected from health-related colleges at
the main campus of Qassim University. The obtained result of their study showed that
there's no significant relationship between personality preferences with the educational
attainment for the students.

According to the article of Cabello and Fernandez-Berrocal in their article Under

Which Conditions Can Introverts Achieve Happiness? Mediation and Moderation Effects
of the Quality of Social Relationships and Emotion Regulation Ability on Happiness,
they stated that Personality traits have been directly associated with happiness. Although
there are happy introverts, the conditions under which they can attain happiness are
unclear at present. Research has shown that extraverts have a strong influence on
happiness, showing that extraverts are happier than introverts The present study takes a
closer look at this concern by analyzing how the quality of social connection and the
ability to regulate emotions can have a positive effect on the happiness of introverts,
especially in large community samples.

Happiness is described as a life with many pleasant and unpleasant experiences

and high life satisfaction experiences. Cabello and Fernandez-Berrocal applied a broad
conceptualization of happiness including both affective and cognitive elements based on
the theory of Lyubomirsky. While positive effects may seem essential to happiness and
are often used interchangeably with happiness in research literature, positive effects do
not adequately capture the concept of happiness, they do not guarantee happiness and
they may be unrelated to many of our happiest experiences. In other words, it is a lot
easier for introverts to attain happiness than introverts. The findings support the existence
relations between happiness and extroversion and quality of social relationship.

In the article of Bhatt and Dhalar, Social networking sites are the primary tools
that facilitate socialisation on the internet. Such websites are gaining enormous popularity
among the young generation. We are gradually using these sites, and are using these sites
quite often. There is yet a knowledge platform that holds the view that the student's
personality traits
13
affect the use of social networking sites. Extroverts undergo online social experiences
with greater success than introverts. Contrary to this, however, Barclay (2010) suggests
introverts are very active in online social interactions, finding it easier to express
themselves online and, in turn, sometimes prefering it.

In introvert and extrovert adolescents personalities a major effect of online social

networking has been found. Improved self-confidence and a positive attitude towards
everything emerged as the main positive results of online social networking in the
majority of extroverts as well as introvert. A significant influence of online social
networking has been found in the pattern of social interaction between introverted and
extroverted adolescent.

Local

According to Trazona, to be awake and alert, introverts require less stimulation

from the world than extroverts do. The brains of extrovert run on an energy-spending
nervous system, whereas the brains of introverts run on an energy-conserving nervous
system. When they take on the parasympathetic side, their body retains energy and
withdraws from the outside environment. The brain of the Introvert treats interactions
with people at the same level of intensity he treats encounters with inanimate objects.
Introverts usually have an active dialog with themselves, and walk around with many
thoughts in their minds most of the time.

Solitude helps recharge for introverts. It is a state or condition of being alone, this
frees your mind from stimuli and no external voices can affect your thoughts. With
proactive teams, the Introvert leaders perform better. It is not impossible to cooperate
with the introverts and extroverts. Small or even complicated problems can be solved by
finding the balance between loneliness and cooperation.
14
Introversion and shyness are commonly perceived as the same. Those two are
quite the same, but in fact they are different. At the same time you can be Shy and an
introvert, while at the same time you can also be Shy and extrovert. Shy is the fear of
negative social judgments, on the other hand introvert is the preference for environments
with slow stimulation.
According to the ABS CBN, Introverts in meetings, presentations and
brainstorming sessions are also not vocal. That's why their talents are often
unacknowledged even though they may be the group's smartest people. Carl Jung first
explained the concept of the extrovert and the introvert in his book "Psychological
Types" in 1921. He said introverts are drawn into the inner world of thought and feeling,
while the extroverts lean toward people's external life and activities. Introverts recharge
when alone while extroverts get their energy from socializing. He even said that the
extreme ends of the extroversion-introversion scale do not contain normal people. No
partiality to either side, we're all in between.
According to Blencede, the first thing that comes to mind when people first hear
the word "introvert" is the kind of people who are shy or who don't like to socialize.
Many people even think that because of their outgoing personalities, extroverts have all
the fun, but that's where they are wrong because introverts have fun too! Introverts are
warm people, who tend to quietly observe and work.
There is no question that introverts are the best listeners, and sometimes they are
in tune with other people's feelings. They don't like small talk, so they take mental notes
and reflect on what people share with them in any conversation. Introverts tend to
gravitate towards cryptic or straightforwardly odd ideas. Typically they don't enjoy things
that are commonplace and popular because they're very careful, that's why they're usually
the people you can turn to when creative ideas come up.
1

Since introverts pay more attention to issues other than socializing, they are
more resilient in accomplishing a mission faster and better. They don't get distracted
easily, and can stay focused for extended periods of time in tasks such as researching and
writing. As Mervin said “They can also be good in planning events. Most introverts
prefer to offer their views in smaller groups. They prefer not to speak in front of a large
audience. That said, there are many introverts who are great presenters or public
speakers.”
In accordance of Po, Introverts are not simply "dwellers in the basement," and
may be just as social as extroverts are. Many renowned scientists, writers, and
mathematicians are introverts because of their intensively analytic existence. Examples
include Albert Einstein and J.K. Rowling: Rowling. Yet showing once again that
introverting doesn't mean being asocial. Nevertheless, neither make the mistake of
supposing that introverts are inherently smarter than extroverts. As Keith Bailey said,
“Sometimes you want your class to be all listening, and other times you want your class
to be all talking."

According to Hirsch, Introverts are actually under great pressure in the workplace.
As he cited from Forbes.com, Introverts may fear that their gregarious peers will
overlook them for promotions, or overwhelm them. In order to compensate for their
insecurity and self-doubt about their quiet personalities, introverts often go to great
lengths to disguise themselves as extroverts.Too often, introverts struggle to act more like
their friendly, talkative, and charming colleagues-only to end up feeling exhausted and
irritated from trying so hard to be someone else.
To unlock the potentials of introverts, incentives must be given where they can
play to their strengths. Of course, learning what these attributes are would entail
familiarizing with them and getting to know them first.Rather than attempting to change
the introverts and compell them to be more sociable, delegating them to tasks where they
can shine would be best. Instead of asking them to explain the presentation, for example,
it would be easier to delegate them instead to make the powerpoint presentations and
paperwork 16
A community that is solely introverted can get research and paperwork completed, but
they may lack persuasiveness when negotiating a contract. An all-extrovert party, on the
other hand, may be too energy-filled and would prefer to "wing it" in presentations,
disregarding the finer details of the paperwork.
Encourage communication with them. There should be a general openness , wherein
the ultimate goal should be to solve problems and get things done. The things left unsaid
will eventually be the ones that make out all the difference. You will prevent bad offers
and missed deadlines if only someone has their back

3.0 Methodology

This chapter tackles the methodology of the research and how it was done. It includes
the strategies, techniques that the researcher used for the research. Procedure on how data
will be collected and the respondents to the research

3.1 Research Design

The research design that the researchers used was Phenomenology Qualitative Study.

Phenomenology is the study of consciousness structures, as experienced from the point

of view of the first person. The central structure of an experience is its intentionality, its
being aimed at something, as it is an experience of some object or about it (Smith, 2013).

3.2 Subjects

The subjects or respondents of the study are the selected 11 th grade students of La
Consolacion College Caloocan. Through convenience sampling, defined as is a type of
non-probability sampling, which doesn’t include random selection of participants. The
opposite is probability sampling, where participants are randomly selected, and each has
an equal chance of being chosen.
3.3 Research Instrument

The researchers will use interview in order to gather the information and answers of
the students regarding to the topic. Essentially a structured conversation in which one
participant asks questions, and the other answers questions. The term "interview" in
common parlance refers to a one-on - one conversation between an interviewer and an
interviewee (Cambridge Dictionary).
Question numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4 corresponds to the research question number 1, what
are the effects of being introverts in their social life?

Question number 5 corresponds to the research question number 2, how does people
perceive the life of an introvert?

Question numbers 6 and 7 corresponds to the research question number 3, what are the
misconceptions that people envision about being introvert?

3.4 Data Analysis

The researchers formulated interview questions that are related to the research
questions and the topic itself and also with the help of the research adviser. The
researchers had the drafted interview questions be validated by their research adviser.
After simulating the suggestions of the research adviser, the researchers revised and
finalized the questionnaire. The researchers had provided one copy of the questionnaires
to interview the target respondents which are the selected Grade 11 Senior High School
Students of La Consolacion College Caloocan.

The researcher interviewed 10 introverted students from different strands and sections
at La Consolacion College Caloocan. Each interview lasts for estimated 10-15 minutes.
Each respondents stated their experiences and their challenges of that they’re facing of
being an introvert. They also shared the misconceptions and inaccurate characteristics
that other people used to describe them.
According to the respondents, their communication skills lowered because of the
incorrect perceptions of other people. But despite of that they always tend to work alone
and to be alone by themselves and to be with fewer friends.

3.5 Ethical Consideration

All the participants advices their participation was completely voluntary and that could
withdraw from the study anytime. Participants also informed that their identity and
aninomity would be ensured and remain hidden and their actual names would not
attached to the any part of the paper or to the interview data. Records were gathered will
be hidden and only researchers had access to it and kept throughout the study.
