Petitioner/ Beneficiary: Dr. XX

Dear Immigration Officer:

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to you for carefully reviewing my case. Upon your
request, I have enclosed the following evidences to address your request of providing “documentary
evidence demonstrating that the beneficiary has made a demonstrative original contribution of major
significance in the field”:
I. My original research work and major contribution of significance to the field.
II. Additional evidences including extensive citations, emails from other scientists, reviewer
experience and peer comparisons to support my significant contributions.
III. Comparison to other scientists in the field.

I. My original research work and major contribution of significance to the field

I have made original scientific contributions of major significance in the field of XX:

1. I pioneered the investigation on XX and was the first to demonstrate that XX.
The originality and contribution of major significance are demonstrated by:
1.1 Publications in international journals and conferences:
The above research results were documented in five articles (EXHIBIT Page 1, Publication
List, Paper #3, #4,#7, #8 and #9,) in worldwide renowned scientific journals and I am the first author
for four articles:
 Two of my articles are published in XX.
The journal “XX” and publishes “the highest quality research” (EXHIBIT Page 90). This journal
is ranked as Q1, which means the highest value, in subject category of XX” (EXHIBIT Page 91)
by SCImago Journal & Country Rank (SJR) (EXHIBIT Page 97).
 Three of my articles are published in XX.
The journal is “XX” (EXHIBIT Page 92).

(For full copies of all my papers please see EXHIBIT Page 3-89; please see EXHIBIT Page 98-104 for
a brief data of journal circulations from “WorldCat”, the world’s largest network of library content.)

Those results were selected to be presented as oral presentations in three international

conferences: XX organized by XX, XX organized by XX and XX (EXHIBIT Page 2). For abstracts of
these presentations, please see EXHIBIT Page 105-108.
 XX is a series of annual conferences organized by XX and is “XX”. As “XX” “XX” (EXHIBIT
Page 113-114). The workshop speakers are only selected by Workshop Chairs (EXHIBIT Page
116). The members of Scientific Programme Committee of XX included worldwide renowned
scientists. Below is a brief list of professors in the Committee (for the complete list, please see
EXHIBIT Page 115): Dr. XX, Distinguished Research Professor at XX; Dr.XX, XX; Dr. XX,
Director XX(EXHIBIT Page 131-134).

 XX is XX, “an international collaboration of professional XX” (EXHIBIT Page 117)and only “less
than 10%” of submitted abstracts to the XX Annual Meeting “can be XX” (EXHIBIT Page 118).
Below is a brief list of professors in Scientific Programme Committee of XX (for the complete list,
please see EXHIBIT Page 119): Dr. XX, Distinguished Research Professor at XX; Dr.XX, XX; Dr.
XX, Director XX (EXHIBIT Page 135-137).
 The Annual Meeting of XX “XX” and “Between 800-900 people attend the annual conferences
…”. “About XX abstract submissions are received per conference. XX” (EXHIBIT Page 120).
Below is a brief list of Scientific Programme Committee of annual meeting of XX) (for the
complete list, please see EXHIBIT Page 121-122): Dr. XX, Distinguished Research Professor at
XX; Dr.XX, XX; Dr. XX, Director XX (EXHIBIT Page 138-139).

1.2 Heavy discussion by other scientists around the world:

 Professor XX, a member of XX (EXHIBIT Page 181) and a worldwide well-known expert in XX
extensively discussed my results and cited three of my articles in his review article published in
XX, Q1 (the highest value) journal in areas of “XX” and “XX” (EXHIBIT Page 182). For
example, he described in the article that “XX”. He also commented on my work as “XX. XX”
(EXHIBIT Page 174-180).
 Dr. XX and her colleagues, a group of scientist from Karolinska Institute, “one of the leading
medical universities in the world and one of the largest in Europe” and “with the responsibility of
awarding the annual Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine” (EXHIBIT Page 188-189), cited
four of my articles in their research article published in XX, Q1 journal in area of “XX” (EXHIBIT
Page 190). The authors described in the article that “According to XX et al. (2005), XX” (EXHIBIT
Page 183-187).

1.3 Industrial citations:

Three of my articles are cited 91 times together by XX Company, “XX” (EXHIBIT Page 167-
168) as background references for its customers in product sheets (Please see EXHIBIT Page 169-171
for complete list and Page 172-173 for two examples). Furthermore, I am the only scientist who has
more than one articles cited by those data sheets, proving my significant contribution to the field.

1.4 Testimonials written by recognized experts around the world:

 Dr. XX, XX, commented, “XX” (EXHIBIT Page 351-352).
 Dr. XX, Professor and Chair of XX, commented, “XX”(EXHIBIT Page 353-356).

2. I successfully characterized XX.

The originality and contribution of major significance are demonstrated by:
2.1 Publications in international journals and conferences:
My groundbreaking findings in this area result in four first-authored publications in peer-
reviewed journals (EXHIBIT Page 1, paper #1, #2, #5 and #6). All these articles are published in top
ranked or prestigious journals which only consider original research for publication:
 XX: This journal is listed as Q1, the highest value, in subject category of XX” (EXHIBIT Page 94)
by SCImago Journal & Country Rank (SJR) (EXHIBIT Page 97). According to the webpage of the
journal, as “XX”, the acceptance rate for 2009 is only “XX% for original articles submitted”
(EXHIBIT Page 93).
 XX: The journal is list as highest value (Q1) among journals in the subject category of XX by SJR.
The journal is the official journal of XX and publishes “XX” (EXHIBIT Page 95).

2
 XX: The journal “XX” and publishes “XX” (EXHIBIT Page 90). This journal is ranked also as Q1
in subject category of XX” (EXHIBIT Page 91) by SCImago Journal & Country Rank (SJR).
 XX: The journal “XX” (EXHIBIT Page 96).

Those results were selected to be presented three times in Annual Meeting of XX “jointly
organised by XX and XX” (EXHIBIT Page 2, Poster Presentations #3, #4 and #5). Please see
EXHIBIT Page 111-112 for abstracts. The conference “provides XX” and “Between XX people attend
the annual conferences XX”. “About XX abstract submissions are received per conference. XX”
(EXHIBIT Page 120). Below is a brief list of professors in the Scientific Programme Committee of XX

three articles are cited 91 times together in product datasheets of XX Company, “XX” as
background references for its customers (EXHIBIT Page 167-173).
 The scientists who cited my work are from 22 different countries and territories, which are
distributed throughout North America, Europe, Asia, South America, Africa and Australia
(EXHIBIT Page 162). Those countries and territories are: Germany, USA, England, P.R. China,
Netherlands, Australia, Italy, Sweden, Belgium, Denmark, Japan, Canada, France, Poland, South
Africa, Spain, Turkey, Wales, Brazil, Israel, Taiwan, and Cuba (EXHIBIT Page 161).
 The scientists who cited my articles are from more than 30 institutions worldwide (EXHIBIT Page
163), of which most are world famous, for example, National Institutes of Health, USA, National
Cancer Institute, USA, University of California, San Diego, The Australian National University,
Karolinska Institute, Sweden, University of Cambridge, England, University of Washington,
Rockefeller University, Baylor College of Medicine, Max Planck Institute of Molecular Genetics
Berlin, Germany, University of California, San Francisco, Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute,

4
England and Chinese Academy of Sciences, China. For a more complete list, please see EXHIBIT
Page 164-165.
 The citing articles are from 19 different subject areas such as Genetics and Heredity, Biochemistry
and Molecular biology, Cell biology, Oncology, Clinical neurology and so on(EXHIBIT Page
166).

In medical research, a scientist's citation rate is a primary indicator of his or her impact on the work
of other researchers. I need to point out that most of my publications have much higher citations than
the average citations per document published in the same journals (EXHIBIT Page 255). A strong
citation record, such as mine, demonstrates the wide-ranging impact of my work on my field.

2. Frequent reviewer experiences:

As indicated in my original petition, I am in the editorial board of several international journals
and have been frequently invited by to serve as a reviewer. I am newly selected as an editorial board
member for two international journals: XX (EXHIBIT Page 256-258) and XX (EXHIBIT Page 259-
260). After I submitted original application, I reviewed nine more manuscripts for four international
journals. Altogether I reviewed twenty-nine (29) times for eight journals in four months. The
journals include XX (EXHIBIT Page 322), XX (EXHIBIT Page 323), XX (EXHIBIT Page 324-326),
XX (EXHIBIT Page 327-333), XX (EXHIBIT Page 334-339), XX (EXHIBIT Page 340-341), XX
(EXHIBIT Page 342-343) and XX (EXHIBIT Page 344-345).
Please see EXHIBIT Page 261-262 for the complete list of manuscripts reviewed (20
manuscripts before and 9 manuscripts after original submission on June 11, 2010) and copies of
invitation letters (EXHIBIT Page 263-321). Frequent invitation to be journal reviewer is an indication
of my high reputation in the field and proves that other top scientists consider my work to be original
and extraordinary and regard me as a top scientist in my field.

3. I have helped the researchers in the field who had sought my data, advice and experience on
their own work.
 Professor XX from XX (EXHIBIT Page 229) sought to collaborate with our group and requested
sample of XX model I established. His student lately sought my advice on experiment, as indicated
in the appreciation email the student sent to me (EXHIBIT Page 225-228).
 Dr. XX, a postdoctoral researcher from the group of Professor XX (EXHIBIT Page 231), XX,
requested information on XX model (EXHIBIT Page 230).
 Dr. XX, a research fellow from a global company, XX, “XX” (EXHIBIT Page 233), requested
information on XX model after I presented my work to scientists from the company (EXHIBIT
Page 232-233).
 Dr. XX, a scientist from the group of Professor XX (EXHIBIT Page 236-237), Director at XX,
sought and acknowledged my help in his published article (EXHIBIT Page 234-235).
 Dr. XX, a scientist from XX, also acknowledged my help in his published review article
(EXHIBIT Page 238-239).

4. My exceptional accomplishments and original contribution of major significance also have

been highly praised by well-established scientists.
 Dr. XX, Vice President & Chief Technology Officer of XX, commented that XX (EXHIBIT Page
346-348).
 Dr. XX, Professor of XX comments that XX (EXHIBIT Page 349-350).
 Dr. XX, XX, commented that XX (EXHIBIT Page 351-352).

5
 Dr. XX, Professor and Chair of XX commented that XX (EXHIBIT Page 353-356).
 Dr. XX, Professor of XX commented that XX (EXHIBIT Page 357-359).
 Dr. XX, Assistant Professor of commented that XX(EXHIBIT Page 360-362).
 Dr.XX, Associate Professor at XX commented that XX (EXHIBIT Page 363-364).
 Dr. XX, Assistant Professor of XXcommented that XX (EXHIBIT Page 365-366).

The witness letters reflect a consensus among scientific experts from my field that not only
have I significantly contributed original and landmark findings to cancer research and genetics, but that
I am also a distinguished researcher of exceptional abilities receiving national or international acclaim.

III. Comparison to other scientists in the field

1. Comparison to other scientists who cited my work:

The selection of these scientists is based on the following criteria: 1) They all have completed
MD or PhD education either in the US or any other part of the world in the approximate year range
where I pursued my PhD study between XX and XX; 2) They all have extended research experience in
academic settings; 3) They all cited my work in their first-authored articles indicating that they are
from same or similar academic field as me. The peer comparison analysis (EXHIBIT Page 240)
indicates that the average number of first-authored publications is 5 and the average number of 1st-
authored publication in 3 years is 3(data obtained from ISI web of Knowledge) (EXHIBIT Page 241-
254). Notably, if solely comparing the data of first-authored publications I, with 8 first-authored
publications and the highest number of 1st-authored publication in 3 years (8), would be placed on the
top rank among the peers.

2. Comparison to other articles in same journals as my publications:

Most of my publications have much higher citations than the average citations per document
published by other scientists in the same journals (EXHIBIT Page 255). For example, the average
citations per document for XX is 3.19 (EXHIBIT Page 91), the average (independent) citations per my
articles in the same journal is 10; the average citations per documents for XX is 2.35 (EXHIBIT Page
92), while the average (independent) citations per my articles in the same journal is 8.

Though it is difficult to compare with other scientists due to variations in publication journal
and subfield, this estimation based on publication and citation has certain fairness and solid data to
demonstrate that my originality and significance of contribution are superior to those of my fellow
researchers and I have risen to the very top of my field.

In summary, I submit herewith evidences for my original significant contributions, including 12

articles published in peer-reviewed journals, 8 abstracts for international conference, extensive citation
(over 180), heavy discussion of my research work by scientists from many countries, frequent
invitations as reviewer, testimonials written by recognized experts around the world, and comparison
of publication record with other scientists in same or similar field, all of which demonstrate that my
research works are original and has made contribution of major significance to the field compared with
others. I respectfully request that you consider these evidences and approve my petition for permanent
residency as an alien of extraordinary ability.

6
Sincerely,

XX, Ph.D.
